  • STEPHEN STILLS “Carry On”: Die Große 4-CD-Retrospektive Mit 25 Unveröffentlichten Tracks Liner Notes
im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 040-5149 1465 [email protected] STEPHEN STILLS “Carry On”: Die große 4-CD-Retrospektive mit 25 unveröffentlichten Tracks Liner Notes We would like to share with all of you this compendium of music from our friend and partner Stephen Stills. From the first recording of his that we could find (from the Voice of America radio station in Costa Rica in 1962) to a 2012 performance at the Beacon Theater in New York City, this set spans 50 years of music from a man whose range of musical expression is legendary, encompassing the blues, rock, folk and Latin music. Once again, we both experienced a newfound respect for Stephen and his extra-special gifts as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer and singer, and when we put together this box set we realized just how much Stephen has contributed to the culture of not only his generation but to the many generations to come. We are honored to have been asked, and trusted, to bring you this collection, and in the end, all we say is… enjoy. -Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein Most of us have experienced a spark in time when we see a vision of the future. Blurry and ephemeral, it nevertheless sticks in our memory only to reveal true meaning much later in life. My spark with Stephen Arthur Stills occurred around 1960 in the living room of my parents’ house in Tampa, Florida. Stephen was the kid next door who played an old steel-stringed Stella guitar and picked with his fingers.

  • CSNY by Gary Goltz
My Encounters with CSNY by Gary Goltz On Thursday, September 12, 1996, I went to see a concert of my favorite singer/song writer Neil Young at Irvine Meadows, in Southern California. My friend suggested I drive my 1955 Broderick Crawford Highway Patrol Buick, as he had knew Neil was a classic collector. After the show, I was allowed to park my Buick next to Neil's tour bus. The tour bus itself was a tribute to classic Buicks. It had two 48 Roadmaster roofs mounted on the top, with a 48 Roadmaster grill mounted on the front, and 61 Buick tail lights mounted on its rear. It also had a set of 54 Buick portholes on its side. After a short wait, Neil came out of the stage exit on his way to the bus. Upon seeing my Highway Patrol car he paused to admire it with a true Buick lover's glow in his eyes. I played the Highway Patrol theme song through the car's P.A. system. This brought a smile to Neil and the estimated 30 people that had gathered around. I switched to a new Neil Young CD (Mirror Ball). With my classic Buick’s mike still in his hand, Neil began singing along to the first track in front of the crowd that had formed. I asked to get a picture and Neil ordered Eliot Roberts (his manager who had been haggling with me to sell Neil my car to which Neil just rolled his eyes at me to ignore) TAKE IT then handed him my camera.

  • Hears Grayson Haver Currin. Portrait by Tim Considine
50 YEARS OF BLUE L OVE S TORIES FROM SASKATOON TO LAUREL CANYON, FROM CRETE TO CHAPEL HILL AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT, THE PLEASURES AND PAINS OF ROMANCE PURSUED JONI MITCHELL. AND 50 YEARS AGO, SHE ETCHED THEM INTO BLUE – A MASTERPIECE OF POETRY AND MELODY, POWER AND VULNERABILITY, THAT ASTONISHED HER PEERS, THEN AND NOW. “IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS I’D EVER HEARD,” HEARS GRAYSON HAVER CURRIN. PORTRAIT BY TIM CONSIDINE. T WAS THE FOURTH DAY OF THE THIRD ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL, SATURDAY, August 29, 1970. The afternoon’s line-up suggested some staggering variety show: Tiny Tim and John Sebastian, The Doors and The Who, Miles Davis with some of the crew that had just made Bitches Brew, and Joni Mitchell, set for the 9pm slot. Local residents had protested the expected influx of loud ne’er-do-wells, especially after the success of the first two festivals and the chaos of Woodstock and Altamont the year before. Organisers scrambled, moving the five-day affair for the first time to a farm at the base of Afton Downs, a hilly expanse of grass-speckled chalk that offered a prime perch for thousands of attendees who believed all music should be free. As the crowd swelled beyond half a million, those who still wanted in began to crash the formidable metal fence. Promoters debated asking the world’s biggest bands to play for free, to appease the growing mob. “The kids got upset about the commercialisation that was going on. When you get a crowd of that many people, and one guy starts, ‘Let’s get in for nothing,’ there’s a ripple effect,” the film-maker Murray Lerner told Louder nearly half a century later.
