In an ideal tourism situation, you'd be able to drive or stroll across the Rainbow International Bridge to enjoy the view from both banks of the Niagara River. But sometimes you just can't get over the border. Maybe you don't have enough time. Maybe your legal status won't allow it. Or maybe you happen to be living through a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic that has sealed national borders. It's all good! If you're restricted to the U.S. side, you won't find yourself over a barrel. There's plenty to do. In fact, some of the best activities in the Niagara Falls area are on the American side. Niagara Falls State Park Niagara Falls State Park If we're being honest, the Canadian side has richer options for quality lodging and tourist amenities, although the stuff on that riverbank tends toward cheesy honky-tonk. The more-than-400-acre Niagara Falls State Park, which is separated from the core of town by a breakaway river, is speckled with whitewater-spanning bridges, river islands, curving walkways, and native animals.

A Selection of Biodiversity Conservation Agencies & Programs A variety of state agencies and programs, in addition to the NY Natural Heritage Program, partner with OPRHP on biodiversity conservation and planning. This appendix also describes a variety of statewide and regional biodiversity conservation efforts that complement OPRHP’s work. NYS BIODIVERSITY RESEARCH INSTITUTE The New York State Biodiversity Research Institute is a state-chartered organization based in the New York State Museum who promotes the understanding and conservation of New York’s biological diversity. They administer a broad range of research, education, and information transfer programs, and oversee a competitive grants program for projects that further biodiversity stewardship and research. In 1996, the Biodiversity Research Institute approved funding for the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to undertake an ambitious inventory of its lands for rare species, rare natural communities, and the state’s best examples of common communities. The majority of inventory in state parks occurred over a five-year period, beginning in 1998 and concluding in the spring of 2003. Funding was also approved for a sixth year, which included all newly acquired state parks and several state parks that required additional attention beyond the initial inventory.     FINAL REPORT Technology Upgrade and Conducting Accessibility Assessments at 400 State‐Operated Recreation Sites Inclusive Recreation Resource Center December 2013 to November 2015 PROJECT SUMMARY Since its inception in 2007, the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center has actively promoted and helped sustain inclusive recreation for ALL people. Through the development of the Inclusivity Assessment Tool, the day‐long Inclusion U training, and the ever‐ growing online recreation database, the IRRC has been instrumental in helping all people play wherever they choose. This project focused on making the IRRC’s work even more accessible to even more people with even more relevant recreation data. How? Through the migration of the Inclusion U training to an online format, Inclusion U Online The redesign of the website The redesign of the online recreation database to a more streamlined and mobile platform The streamlining of the Inclusivity Assessment Tool (IAT) to allow data to be entered into the database more efficiently and by more people The development of an app for mobile use The development of a trail assessment checklist Working with two partners, NYS DEC and NYS OPRHP to assessing state‐administered recreation sites throughout the state of New York Our project rolled out according to plans.     STATE PARK HIGHLIGHTS BY REGION The 359 imperiled animal species, rare plant species, and significant natural community types known in the state park system are distributed across the state according to the availability of habitat, so boreal species, for example, are typically restricted to northerly regions while Midwestern species are mostly in western New York. Despite this patchy distribution, however, the numbers of rare species and natural community types in each region consistently range between about five and 20 (Figure 3). The Long Island and Palisades Regions, however, are dramatically more diverse. While exploring the reasons for the variation in the Long Island and Palisades Regions was beyond the scope of this project, we surmise that several factors may be behind it. First, many of New York’s rare species and unusual natural community types are maritime, and these species and communities are restricted to Long Island. Second, the Long Island and Palisades Regions may capture species and natural community types (such as tiger salamanders – Ambystoma tigrinum) that are reaching the northern extent of their ranges. Third, these regions include several geologically unusual areas, particularly the Long Island moraine and the Shawangunk Ridge, which create uncommon habitats. Finally, the Palisades Region includes several of the state’s largest parks – Harriman, Sterling Forest®, and Minnewaska – and greater area increases the likelihood of having a rare species or significant natural community present. A final factor that may or may not hold up under analysis is that the Long Island and Palisades Regions have undergone some of the most intensive development in the state, which may have given them a disproportionate number of species that were once common but are now rare.

The state of New York is 2 distinguished by its unique and multiple geological resources like 3 Niagara Falls, Letchworth Gorge, and the Adirondack and Catskill parks. 4 Geological resources give the state special landscapes with considerable 5 natural, cultural, economic, aesthetic, recreational, touristic and 6 symbolic importance to the people of the state and visitors to the 7 state. Geologists played an important role in developing the landscapes 8 of the state, including the planning of the Erie Canal and undertaking 9 geological surveys and mapping. The legislature finds that it is time to 10 recognize the geological resources of the state and to utilize them to 11 foster conservation awareness and education. Geological resources can be 12 connected in a trail system that will strengthen the social and economic 13 well-being of the people of the state. Geological trails can be an 14 educational resource that will make the outdoors more interesting and 15 rewarding. Therefore, it is the intent of the legislature to organize 16 the planners, educators and conservationists to plan and execute the 17 establishment of geological trails with interpretive features across the 18 width and breadth of the state.
