Your cooperative is locally owned and controlled by you, our members. Thursday, May 30, is your co-op’s annual meeting. For the past 74 years, Black Hills Electric members have met annually to visit with cooperative staff and other members of our co-op community, to learn about programs offered by the co-op, to listen about the issues affecting Black Hill Electric and to learn about how you can be part of a solution to those challenges. The Annual Meeting provides the opportunity for you to exercise one of the greatest benefits of being a member of an electric cooperative, by participating in the business of your co-op. “Democratic Member Control” is the second of our Seven Cooperative Principals. In my opinion, Democratic Member Walker Witt Control is the most important principal. The democratic process allows you— [email protected] the members—to select who represents you on the board of directors, which governs, and determines the strategy and direction of your cooperative. For the first time in several years, we will not have a contested election, but both incumbent directors, whose positions were up for election, will address the membership and will be declared elected at the meeting. For the democratic process to be effective, member participation is crucial.
