It is distinguished from other congeners lacking pelvic fin and girdle,C. pascuali and C. tropeiro, by having six pectoral-fin rays, 20–23 dorsal procurrent caudal-fin rays, 15–20 opercular and 25–30 interopercular odontodes and a different colour pattern consisting of flank dark brownish-grey with two irregular horizontal rows of small pale yellow grey marks. Whereas available molecular evidence indicates that C. pascuali is more closely related to C. zonata, a species with well-developed pelvic fin, andC. tropeiro is more close- ly related to C. balios, another species also with well-developed pelvic fin; osteological data strongly suggest that the new species herein described is more closely related to C. diatropoporos than to other congeners. -
A New Species of the Neotropical Catfish Genus Trichomycterus (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) Representing a New Body Shape for the Family
Copeia 2008, No. 2, 273–278 A New Species of the Neotropical Catfish Genus Trichomycterus (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) Representing a New Body Shape for the Family Wolmar Benjamin Wosiacki1 and Ma´rio de Pinna2 Trichomycterus crassicaudatus is described as a new species from the Rio Iguac¸u basin in southern Brazil. The new species has an exceptionally deep posterior region of the body (caudal peduncle depth 22.8–25.4% SL), resulting in an overall shape which distinguishes it at once from all other members of the Trichomycteridae. The caudal fin of the species is broad-based and forked, a shape also distinguishing it from all other species in the family. A number of autapomorphic modifications of T. crassicaudatus are associated with the deepening of the caudal region, including an elongation of the hemal and neural spines of the vertebrae at the middle of the caudal peduncle. Phylogenetic relationships of the new species are yet unresolved, but it shares a similar color pattern and a thickening of caudal-fin procurrent rays with T. stawiarski, a poorly-known species also from the Rio Iguac¸u basin. Coloration and body shape also include similarities with T. lewi from Venezuela. HE genus Trichomycterus is the largest in the the ninth species of Trichomycterus recorded for the Rio family Trichomycteridae, with approximately 100 Iguac¸u Basin above the Iguac¸u waterfalls (the others being T. Silva1, Fausto Foresti1, Michael Alfaro5 & Claudio Oliveira1 The family Trichomycteridae is one of the most diverse groups of freshwater catfshes in South and Central America with eight subfamilies, 41 genera and more than 300 valid species. Its members are widely distributed throughout South America, reaching Costa Rica in Central America and are recognized by extraordinary anatomical specializations and trophic diversity. In order to assess the phylogenetic relationships of Trichomycteridae, we collected sequence data from ultraconserved elements (UCEs) of the genome from 141 specimens of Trichomycteridae and 12 outgroup species. We used a concatenated matrix to assess the phylogenetic relationships by Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) searches and a coalescent analysis of species trees. The results show a highly resolved phylogeny with broad agreement among the three distinct analyses, providing overwhelming support for the monophyletic status of subfamily Trichomycterinae including Ituglanis and Scleronema. Previous relationship hypotheses among subfamilies are strongly corroborated, such as the sister relationship between Copionodontinae and Trichogeninae forming a sister clade to the remaining trichomycterids and the intrafamilial clade TSVSG (Tridentinae-Stegophilinae-Vandelliinae- Sarcoglanidinae-Glanapteryginae). Monophyly of Glanapteryginae and Sarcoglanidinae was not supported and the enigmatic Potamoglanis is placed outside Tridentinae. Unraveling the relationships of major sections of the Tree of Life is one of the most daunting challenges of the evolutionary biology. Massively parallel DNA sequencing (so-called Next-gen sequencing) is a promising tool that is helping to resolve the interrelationships of longstanding problematic taxa1–4. -

These caves are drained by the Carare River of the Magdalena River basin. The new species is characterized by the advanced condition in the typical troglomorphisms found in other congeneric cave-dwelling species, such as absence of eyes and pigmentation. Trichomycterus rosablanca is diagnosed by the following putative autapomorphies: 1) presence of a circular foramen in the main body of the interopercle, dorsal to the interopercular plate supporting the odontodes, and 2) presence of a single sensory pore in the posteriormost section of the infraorbital canal. -

Vari3 Trichomycterus minus, new species, is described from an Andean stream in Provincia de Catamarca, Argentina. The new species is distinguished from congeners by the number of supraorbital pores, the form of the supraorbital canal within the frontal, the length of the lateral line canal, the shape of the supraorbital tendon bone, the size of the premaxilla, the form of the barbels, an absence of a thick layer of rugose fatty tissue on the head and body, the number and degree of exposure of odontodes on the interopercle, the limited compression of the caudal peduncle, details of pigmentation, the number of premaxillary tooth rows, and the head form from a dorsal view. Trichomycterus corduvensis is recorded from thermal waters, the second locality known to be inhabited by members of the genus. Article Comparative Osteology, Phylogeny and Classification of the Eastern South American Catfish Genus Trichomycterus (Siluriformes: Trichomycteridae) Wilson J. E. M. Costa Laboratory of Systematics and Evolution of Teleost Fishes, Institute of Biology, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Caixa Postal 68049, Rio de Janeiro CEP 21941-971, Brazil; [email protected] Abstract: Trichomycterus has been considered for a long time to be the most problematic genus of the diverse neotropical subfamily Trichomycterinae. Recently, Trichomycterus was restricted to a clade from eastern South America supported by molecular data, but no unique morphological character state was found to distinguish it, making it difficult to allocate new species based on morphology alone. The objectives of this study were to conduct an osteological comparative analysis comprising a large sample of valid species of Trichomycterus, to conduct a total evidence phylogenetic analysis, combining osteological characters and a multigene database, and to propose an intrageneric classification based on the results of the phylogenetic analysis. Fifty-two osteological characters were combined with a multigene molecular data set of 2974 bp for 44 species of Trichomycterus, and 21 outgroups generated a well-supported phylogenetic tree, making it possible to delimit and diagnose intrageneric lineages, of which six subgenera are recognized. The high morphological diversity of osteological structures herein first reported for Trichomycterus from eastern South America Citation: Costa, W.J.E.M. is possibly related to some ecological specializations. This nominal species is demonstrated to constitute a junior synonym of Eremophilus mutisii, and then not represents a case of extinction of a fish endemic to Colombia, as currently accepted.
