It received such huge acclaim from critics and fans that it was Blue Estate: Volume 2, perhaps, that a second volume would appear. Blue Note duly obliged, releasing a second and final instalment the following year. By the mids, Joe Henderson, originally from Lima, Ohio, was 42 years old but already assured of a place in the pantheon of great jazz saxophonists. After that, Henderson enjoyed a long sting at Milestone Records, though the late 70s found him freelancing for several different smaller companies. The recordings from those Village Vanguard concerts in showed that Henderson was at the peak of his creative powers. While the first volume of State Of The Tenor confirmed that Blue Estate: Volume 2 Henderson was still a force to be reckoned with in jazz, the second volume served to underline that impression while also satisfying the need of those who wanted to hear more material from the concerts. Certainly, Henderson gives a bona fide masterclass in terms of saxophone improvisation. Ron Carter also demonstrates his bass prowess with a solo that is supple yet eloquent, but which keeps propelling the song forward. He then embarks on a long passage of extemporisation defined by breathtaking melodic slaloms. His approach is gentle to the point of being delicate, but you can also sense a pent-up power which gives his melodic lines a robust muscularity. The live rendition on State Of The Tenor, Volume 2 is not as frenetic, perhaps, Blue Estate: Volume 2 the original, though as it develops it certainly transmits a high-intensity post-bop approach to jazz. Henderson is nothing less than magisterial. According to Harley, however, the music on the new vinyl edition of State Of The Tenor, Volume 2 sounds superior to the original. The long awaited final set from Happy Valley is now available. Happy Valley is Keith Greeninger's studio deep in the Santa Cruz mountains that hides in the redwood trees and flocks of birds. It's a magical place for musicians to perform. In we brought a remote DSD recording unit to the studio. Keith supplied the musicians, most Blue Estate: Volume 2 whom we had never met. We were overwhelmed by their musicianship and authenticity when performing. This must have been what Alan Lomax felt like recording folk music of his generation. A truly magical day. We've purposely left some of the conversation before and after the songs in so that you can experience the day along with us. The audience was a mix of our own crew, a video crew, the other musicians, and a few interested local friends. These recordings constitute the entire output of Miles Davis on Blue Note with exception of his later, Columbia-era session with Cannonball AdderleySomethin' Else in Eleven titles in the new series consisted of reissued inch material. Because of the introduction of the variable pitch lathe, it was now possible to cut the contents of two inch LPs onto a single inch LP. Both Coggins and McLean were part of the band with which Miles had just wrapped up a week-long engagement at Birdland. Coggins who left music permanently not long after these sessions to pursue a career in real estate Blue Estate: Volume 2 trombonist J. Johnson are heard on both of the WOR sessions. The rhythm section is rounded out by Oscar Pettiford and the godfather of bop drumming, Kenny Clarke. The session substitutes Jimmy Heath on tenor joined by his brother Percy on bass and Art Blakey on the drums. Van Gelder was moonlighting as a recording Blue Estate: Volume 2 in a home studio built into his parents living room especially for this purpose. Perhaps more importantly, at the beginning ofMiles had locked himself in a hotel room in Detroit for twelve days and finally emerged free of the heroin addiction which had been plaguing him throughout the early s and slowly destroying his hitherto promising career. This has some scuff marks on the last track on side two, but it's hard to say if these originated at United or in transit. Either way, the marks are completely cosmetic and do not affect the sound Blue Estate: Volume 2 any way. Apart from the light scuffs, this record is flat and clean and there isn't even surface noise related to the scuff marks. The sound is comparable to other BN75s, and while I'm sure an original smokes this reissue, my previous copy was a fake stereo reissue from the early '70s that I have never missed once since picking this one up.
