Send to: PO Box A182, Sydney South NSW 1235. 2 - The CORNSTALK Gazette FEBRUARY 2015 PRESIDENTS REPORT Dear Folk Fed Members, Elsewhere in this issue of Cornstalk, you will see a notice advising of the reduction in our printing schedule. Starting with the April 2015 issue, Cornstalk will become a bi-monthly publication, reducing from 11 issues per annum to 6. This decision has not been taken lightly, but has been the subject of extensive debate and was confirmed at the last AGM. There are many reasons for this decision, among them the dramatic changes in com- munication media that have occurred over the past several years. Most of you now receive Folkmail weekly via email, bringing you bang up to date with folk events throughout NSW and beyond. If you are not receiving Folkmail, I encourage you to con- tact our Membership Secretary Wayne Richmond ([email protected]) and prepare to be amazed. The website jam.org.au was established some time ago as the “do-it-yourself site for NSW folkies” and remains available to all members to post news of upcoming events, write reviews, seek musicians and generally communicate with the folk world. Add to this the Folk Fed’s Facebook page and we have a wealth of information sources available to Folk Fed members, not forgetting the many other sources of information that the net provides. The cost of producing Cornstalk – both financially and in volunteer hours – is considerable. The search for articles to fill a monthly publication is unrelenting. The cost of postage and printing is increasing and our volunteers are feeling the pressure - something had to give. We hope that reducing the frequency of Cornstalk will not greatly inconvenience our members, in view of so much alternative information available electronically. If you feel that you are unduly inconvenienced by this decision – and particularly if you do not have access to the Internet – please let us know. Over the coming months, we will provide details on how you can make effective use of our Facebook page, website & other media. Once again I would like to pay tribute to our long suffering editor Coral Vorbach, to Wayne Richmond, Julie Bishop, wrap team Jim & Dallas Baxter and the other unsung heroes who work so hard to bring the folk news to your door. These people deserve a break! In reducing the frequency of Cornstalk, we hope to make their lives just that little bit easier. Happy New Year to all Folk Fed members & friends. My New Year’s Resolution is to extend my folkie horizons by visiting as many folk clubs & festivals as possible. I hope to meet you in my travels. Pam Davis January 2015 Cornstalk moving to bi-monthly publication Please note that Cornstalk will be published bi-monthly from the April 2015 issue. There will be 7 issues in 2015 - February, March, April, June, August, October & December. There will be 6 issues annually thereafter. N.B. From April, information for the Diary Dates pages will need to include events for the current & following month! Deadline dates for 2015 are: Issue Period covered Deadline for contributions March March 15th February April April & May 15th March June June & July 15th May August August & September 15th July October October & November 15th September December December & January 15th November February 2016 February & March 2016 15th January 2016 Information about upcoming events will continue to be promoted via Folkmail, the website (jam.org.au) and the Federa- tion's Facebook page. Members who are concerned about these changes should contact the President, Pam Davis ([email protected]; 9955 3677). Thank you for coming out on what’s been such a hot day, but what is going to be a very hot evening. I’m the Director of the State Library, my name is Bronwyn Halliday, and on behalf of the Board and of the staff of the State Library I’d really like to welcome everybody here tonight. Tonight’s event, Songlines, is the first of a series of events designed to promote the collections of the State Library, and in particular the audio-visual collections. Our collections are much more than books. They’re audio recordings, they’re films, they’re gramophone records there’s even some waxed cylinders out there. And we just want the rest of the community to know about our collections. Some of you will know that we’re planning a forty million dollar redevelopment at the State Library.

The ballad tells the story of an un-named young man living ‘the free life of a rover’ (or swagman). However, World War One breaks out and he answers the call to serve his country as a soldier. Presumably after some time training, he embarks on a ship amidst cheers and tears from the crowd. As they pull away from the dock, a band plays the iconic Australian song, ‘Waltzing Matilda’. The ship is taking the soldiers to the Dardanelles where unbeknownst to them, they are to participate in a battle that will be credited with forging an identity for the fairly new1 federation of Australia: the Gallipoli campaign of 1915.
