This article argues that Southland Tales is an example of what feminist theologian Catherine Keller calls the “counter-apocalyptic” (Keller 1996:19-20). Through strategies of ironic parody Kelly both describes and questions the apocalyptic and its easy polarities. In situating the film as counter-apocalyptic the paper argues that the film both resists the apocalyptic impulse however it is also located within it. In this sense it produces a unique take on the genre of the post-apocalyptic film and a powerful fluid critique of the post 9/11 security state. The Gathering by Ana Reisens Adult Category, First Place In the movie we sleep fearlessly on open planes because we cannot imagine any danger more tragic than those that have already passed. For weeks we have been arriving over the earth’s broken skin, over mountains and rivers, shaking the aching flagpoles from our shoulders. Now all the priests and imams and rabbis and shamans are gathered beside the others, teachers, brothers and kings and they’re sharing recipes and cooking sweet stories over fires. Suddenly we hear a voice calling from the sky or within – or is it a radio? – and it sings of quilts and white lilies as if wool and petals were engines. It’s a lullaby, a prayer we all understand, familiar like the scent of a lover’s skin. And as we listen we remember our grandmothers’ hands, the knitted strength of staying, how silence rises like warmth from a woven blanket. And slowly the lines begin to disappear from our skin and our memories spin until we’ve forgotten the I of our own histories and everyone is holy, everyone is laughing, weeping, singing, It’s over, come over, come in. And this is it, the story, an allegory, our movie – the ending and a beginning. The producer doesn’t want to take the risk. No one will watch it, he says, but we say, Just wait. All the while a familiar song plays on the radio and somewhere in a desert far away a soldier in a tank stops as if he’s forgotten the way.

  • Jessica Pegula Press Conference
Miami Open presented by Itaú Sunday, March 28, 2021 Miami, Florida, USA Jessica Pegula Press Conference JESSICA PEGULA: Yeah, I mean, it was definitely a J. PEGULA/Ka. Pliskova different feeling, you know, beating her this time. It was tougher. She played better. 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 I think too it's just -- you know, maybe I was not expected THE MODERATOR: Questions, please. to win but, you know, I beat her the last two times. It's, like, Okay, can you do it again? Q. I just want to get your thoughts on the match. Tough three-set match. Pretty much a big upset today Definitely maybe a different kind of pressure that way, but I against Pliskova? knew kind of what I had to do and how to play. I played really well I thought up to a set and 4-1, and then I thought JESSICA PEGULA: Yeah. Well, I played her a lot the last she definitely picked up her game. Maybe I missed a few three weeks, three tournaments. I definitely knew what to first serves and she took her chances when she had it expect. I kind of expected her to play well there. Even even from 4-1 down and she was fighting. when I was up I still felt like she could easily come back just because she plays so aggressive and she serves well. So definitely different than the last few matches we played, and I expected that, because obviously she's a top player So I knew it could switch at any second, and it did.
