They had at least five children. 2 Descendants of Robert Battle Robert Lucy Battle Barber 1782 - 1862 1786 - 1865 George Mary Robert Robert Lucy Elizabeth Eliza William Hannah Henry Edward Harriet Lucy Harriet Self Battle Mayhew Battle Battle Battle Battle Knights Battle Battle Leek Battle Battle 1802 - 1805 - 1816 - 1807 - 1891 1809 - 1811 - 1817 - 1820 - 1819 - 1826 - 1901 1825 - 1899 1826 - 1828 - 3 Battle Family Notes for Robert Battle It is believed that Robert and Lucy were Edmund's grandparents. They were both born in Pettistree in the 1780's nad they married in 1805. According to another researcher, by 1841 they were living in Campsea Ashe and continued to do so until the 1861 census when they were living in Wickham Market. He may have died in 1862, Lucy in 1865. In total they had at least 9 children. Mary, mother of Edmund, was probably the eldest and she was probably born out of wedlock, her parents marrying just after her birth. Their eldest son was also called Robert and he also married a Lucy. The IGI records she was also a Lucy Barber, but whether this is accurate or not needs verification. They had at least six children. William Battle married Hannah Knights from Pettistree. Another child, Edward, married Harriet Leek and they had at least 11 children and lived in Wickham Marketg most of their maried life. 4 Descendants of Edmund Battle Edmund Rebecca Battle Davy 1827 - 1913 1824 - 1899 Ephraim Sarah Mary Ellen Eliza Thomas William Harriet Elizabeth Emily Rosina Elijah Fred Silas Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle 1849 - 1851 - 1853 - 1855 - 1859 - 1861 - 1863 - 1866 - 1867 - 5 Battle Family Notes for Edmund Battle It is believed that Edmund was the illegitimate son of George Self and Mary Battle. He was born in 1827 in Campsea Ashe and an IGI record indciates he was son of Mary Battle or Barber. His father's name is not recorded, but family tradition has it that George was the father. Evidence from the log of the Java also indicates this. He married Rebecca Davy (possibly Davies) and they lived for at least some time in Kettleburgh, although their second child was born in Campsea Ashe. They emigrated to Australia on board the ship Java and this arrived at Botany Bay on 24th or 27th April 1853. Sadly their youngest daughter, Sarah, died on the voyage. The record of the voyage records that Edmund's parents were George Self and Mary Battle, the latter living at Kettleburgh. They paid £3 for the trip and it is recorded that Edmund could read and that Rebeca could both read and write. Evidence for Edmund in Australia comes from family trees of other researchers and needs further verification. It is believed he and Rebecca had a further seven children and that he dies in 1913, his wife having died in 1899. 6 Descendants of Mary Battle George Mary Robert Self Battle Mayhew 1802 - 1805 - 1816 - Edmund Rebecca David Alan Robert James Battle Davy Mayhew Mayhew Mayhew Mayhew 1827 - 1913 1824 - 1899 1838 - 1842 - 1844 - 1848 - Ephraim Sarah Mary Ellen Eliza Thomas William Harriet Elizabeth Emily Rosina Elijah Fred Silas Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle 1849 - 1851 - 1853 - 1855 - 1859 - 1861 - 1863 - 1866 - 1867 - 7 Battle Family Notes for Mary Battle Mary was the daughter of Robert and Lucy Battle, born at Campsea Ashe in 1805. She was the mother of Edmund, but did not marry the father, George. Instead it is believed - but more verification is required - that she married Robert Mayhew in 1834 and moved to Kettleburgh. They had at least 4 children. Nothing is known of them after 1871. 8 Descendants of Nathaniel Self Nathaniel Sarah Self Wright 1761 - 1841 - 1839 Born: 1761 Married: 20 Oct 1793 in Pettistree John Charles Sarah Ann Edward Susan Nathaniel George Mary Mary James Eliza Cont. p. 10 Self Self Self Self 1795 - Self Self Battle Self Self Self 1794 - 1795 - 1798 1796 - 1799 - 1863 Born: 1795 1801 - 1802 - 1805 - 1804 - 1806 - 1808 - 1809 Born: 05 Jun 1794 Born: 17 Sep 1795 Born: 26 Dec 1796 Born: 21 Sep 1799 in Somerset Born: 02 Feb 1801 Born: 21 Sep 1802 Born: 29 Jun 1805 Born: 04 Feb 1804 Born: 18 Mar 1806 Born: 22 Apr 1808 in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe in Campsea Ashe Edmund Rebecca Battle Davy 1827 - 1913 1824 - 1899 Born: 1827 Born: 12 Oct 1824 in Campsea Ashe in Syleham, Suffolk Ephraim Sarah Mary Ellen Eliza Thomas William Harriet Elizabeth Emily Rosina Elijah Fred Silas Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle 1849 - 1851 - 1853 - 1855 - 1859 - 1861 - 1863 - 1866 - 1867 - Born: 1849 Born: 13 Jan 1851 Born: 1853 Born: 30 Nov 1855 Born: 1859 Born: 1861 Born: 1863 Born: 01 Mar 1866 Born: 17 Oct 1867 in Kettleburgh in Campsea Ashe in New South Wales in New South Wales in New South Wales in New South Wales in New South Wales in New South Wales in New South Wales 9 Descendants of Nathaniel Self Sarah Nathaniel Wright Self - 1839 1761 - 1841 Married: 20 Oct 1793 Born: 1761 in Pettistree Cont. p. 9 William Susan Self 1814 - 1810 - Born: 1814 Born: 28 Feb 1810 in Campsea Ashe William George Sarah Ann Charles James John Self Self Self Self Self Self 1838 - 1841 - 1845 - 1846 - 1848 - 1850 - Born: 1838 Born: 1841 Born: 1845 Born: 1846 Born: 1848 Born: 1850 in Holton in Holton in Holton in Holton in Holton in Holton 10 Battle Family Notes for Nathaniel Self Nathaniel Self is the earliest known ancestor in the Self family and he was grandfather of Edmund. He married Sarah Wright in 1793 at Pettistree, but he was born in Campsea Ashe and they appeared to live in the village. They had at least 10 children, some of whom we have found records: Charles was second son, but it looks as though he died when only 3 years old. Edward lived from 1799 to 1863 and is buried, along with his wife Susan, in the churchyard at Campsea Ashe. It is believed he was a Police Constable for the village as well as being a 'farmer of 8 acres' (1851 census). George Self was father of Edmund, but he did not marry Edmund's mother, Mary Battle. It is not known what happened to George. Eliza was another child who died in infancy - 7 May 1809 aged about 1 year old. William was the youngest child, born 1811. A record of him has been found living in Holton, Norwich, in 1851, although this needs verification. His recorded age is about right and he was born in Campsea Ashe, so this could be him. He was married to Susan and they had six children. 11.
