WALES AND IRELAND TRIP MAY 12 TO JUNE 4, 2009 What a coincidence! Meaningless, to be sure - but a coincidence, nonetheless. Our trip to the British Isles in 2009 began and ended one day earlier than our trip to Scotland, May 14 to June 5, 2001. (One can only hope that September of this year doesn't hold the same sort of unpleasant surprise that was visited upon us eight years ago.) OK, so I made a "small" error - we are departing two days earlier, not one. And, OK, so it wasn't much of a coincidence, was it? I mean, a real coincidence - one of excruciating consequence - occurred at the Polo Grounds in NYC on October 3, 1951 when Ralph Branca of the Blessed Brooklyn Dodgers was called in to pitch in the 9th inning and, by coincidence, Bobby Thomson of the Bestial New York Giants happened to come to bat, and, by coincidence, Mr. Branca happened to throw a pitch that the aforementioned Mr. Thomson happened to swing at, and, by coincidence, made contact with said pitch and drove it a miserable 309 feet into the first row of the left- field seats of the absurdly apportioned Polo Grounds, thus ending the Dodgers' season and causing a certain 12-year-old, watching on TV, in Brooklyn to burst into tears. Now that was a coincidence! But I digress. Tuesday, May 12 to Wednesday, May 13 Rather than leaving our car at the Seattle Airport Parking Garage (cost for three-plus weeks $468) or at an airport hotel (about $335) we decide to try the new Gig Harbor Taxi (at $95 each way, including tip). -

It is believed that Canton is named after St Canna, the holy matron in the Celtic age of Saints, and Canna herself is reputed to have been a relative of King Arthur In 1215 a parishioner called Lucia de Kanetune is recorded as occupying a field ‘near the Earl's wall’. -

From the Glamorgan Gazette - 1866 Cottagers’ Exhibition at St Quintin’s Castle An exhibition of this kind was held yesterday (Tuesday) in the grand old ruins of St Quintin’s castle, and we can scarcely conceive a more romantic spot for the holding of a floral fete than the rich urban district of Llanblethian. The place itself, independent of Nature’s adornments, which are fully developed here, is rich in historic association, and the surrounding district is full of interest to the antiquarian. The castellated ruins, the farm homestead, have some affinity to past history, and the intelligent inhabitants are as well versed in the pedigree of defunct knights as the local politician is with the sayings and acts of his pet statesman. The charmingly picturesque village of Llanblethian (or Llan Bledian) is situate in the “cwmwdd” of Maenor Glyn Ogwr, which is now called the hundred of Ogmore, and runs down the side and to the foot of the hill; the cleanly cottages and garden plots are well surrounded with trees, which imparts to the whole a scarcely unequalled rural and picturesque effect. The village is included in the chapelry of Cowbridge and its religious wants are ministered by the Rev. Thomas Edmondes, vicar, who is also one of the magisterial magistrates of the Borough of Cowbridge. The living of Llanblethian in days long past was valued in the king’s books at £10.13s.4d, how far the stipend of the present day hold comparison, or otherwise, with the past it is no business of ours to enquire. -

The ROATH LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY was formed in November 1978. Its objects include collecting, interpreting and disseminating information about the old ecclesiastical parish of Roath, which covered an area which includes not only the present district of Roath but also Splott, Pengam, Tremorfa, Adamsdown, Pen-y-lan and parts of Cathays and Cyncoed. Meetings are held every Thursday during school term at 7.15 p.m. at Albany Road Junior School, Albany Road, Cardiff. The Society works in association with the Exra-mural Department of the University College, Cardiff who organise an annual series of lectures (Fee:£8.50) during the Autumn term at Albany Road School also on Thursday evenings. Students enrolling for the course of ten Extra-mural lectures may join the Society at a reduced fee of £3. for the period 1 January to 30 September 1984. The ordinary membership subscription for the whole year (1 October to 30 September 1984) is £5. Members receive free "Project Newsletters" containing results of research as well as snippets of interest to all who wish to find out more about the history of Roath. Danescourt Community Association Responding to the concerns of our community Planning Application 20/00187/MJR Residential Development for 45 Dwellings - Land at De Braose Close, Danescourt, Cardiff OBJECTION This Community Association strongly OBJECTS to this proposal for the following reasons: Background 1. All previous applications to develop this site have been refused, both by the Local Planning Authority and subsequently at appeal. The reasons for these refusals remain applicable to this proposal. The Planning Inspector for the 2005 appeal stated "It is evident that the area of open space, within which the site lies, is valued by local residents because it is an easily accessible area that has retained, to a significant extent, a rural character, and which also contributes to the enjoyment of recreational users who appreciate its role as part of a larger area of open space….further development would erode the present balance between the natural environment and the built form." The more recent appeal, in respect of an application to build 48 houses, was refused largely on the grounds of its impact to highway safety in Radyr Court Road. 2. There were strong reasons why this land was not allocated for housing in the Local Development Plan (LDP). The area is part of the Taff River Corridor and one which is very difficult to access. Major development has been allowed nearby, at Danescourt, but more recently at Plasdwr and at the BBC site, but this is a vital piece of green open space comprised of pasture land and woodland which is available for leisure purposes and it continues to be much valued as such by local residents. -
