SolinasLord Dunsany, one of the earliest writers of fantasy as we know it, was particularly a master of creating fictional mythologies -- stories that read like old tales of creation, gods and heroes, but which never had anything to do with real-life myths. This series of short stories is connected with "Gods of Pegana," which is currently in print with it in the massive Fantasy Masterworks book, available only in the UK.In it, you will find tales of Slid, an upstart young god; the Dawnchild, who loses her golden ball; the hideous Pestilence; Time and how it overthrew even what the gods favored; laughter, prophecies, doom and hope, punishment, night and day, gods and human beings.As usual, he wrote enchantingly. His prose is somewhat biblical in manner, which may scare off people who prefer lighter reads. This isn't something you can really skim, as you can't skim the Mabinogion, the Iliad, or the Eddas. Dunsany had an exquisite manner of writing, and he never skimps on lush details and beautiful descriptions.A wonderful piece of work. I hope that someone reprints it very soon. Time and the GodsLord DunsanyTime and the Gods is the second book by Irish fantasy writer Lord Dunsany, considered a major influence on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula K. Le Guin and others.The book was first published in hardcover by William Heinemann in September, 1906, and has been reprinted a number of times since. It was issued by the Modern Library in an unauthorised combined edition with The Book of Wonder under the latter's title in 1918.Dunsany had a brief preface in the original edition and added a new introduction to the 1922 edition.The book is a series of short stories linked by Dunsany's invented pantheon of deities who dwell in Pegana. It was preceded by his earlier collection The Gods of Pegana and followed by some stories in The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories.The book was illustrated by Dunsany's preferred artist Sidney Sime, who provided a range of black and white plates, the originals of which are still at Dunsany Castle. Medievalism and the Shocks of Modernity: Rewriting Northern Legend from Darwin to World War II by Dustin Geeraert A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba In partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of English, Film, and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2016 by Dustin Geeraert 1 Abstract Literary medievalism has always been critically controversial; at various times it has been dismissed as reactionary or escapist. This survey of major medievalist writers from America, England, Ireland and Iceland aims to demonstrate instead that medievalism is one of the characteristic literatures of modernity. Whereas realist fiction focuses on typical, plausible or common experiences of modernity, medievalist literature is anything but reactionary, for it focuses on the intellectual circumstances of modernity. Events such as the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, many political revolutions, the world wars, and the scientific discoveries of Isaac Newton (1643-1727) and above all those of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), each sent out cultural shockwaves that changed western beliefs about the nature of humanity and the world. Although evolutionary ideas remain controversial in the humanities, their importance has not been lost on medievalist writers. Thus, intellectual anachronisms pervade medievalist literature, from its Romantic roots to its postwar explosion in popularity, as some of the greatest writers of modern times offer new perspectives on old legends. The first chapter of this study focuses on the impact of Darwin’s ideas on Victorian epic poems, particularly accounts of natural evolution and supernatural creation. The second chapter describes how late Victorian medievalists, abandoning primitivism and claims to historicity, pushed beyond the form of the retelling by simulating medieval literary genres.

Tolkien e la letteratura inglese Parte I: dal Romanticismo al 1914 di Simone Bonechi In questo breve saggio cercherò di dare (per quanto posso, essendo sostanzialmente un neofita nel campo della Letteratura Inglese) alcuni primi elementi che possano mostrare come le radici dell‟opera letteraria di J.R.R. Tolkien non siano da ricercarsi unicamente nella letteratura mitologica e fantastica del medioevo celtico, anglosassone e nordico, ma che una influenza decisiva nel determinare il carattere di questa sia da attribuirsi al contesto letterario e culturale della sua epoca e di quella immediatamente precedente. Una prima, più approfondita analisi dei suoi lavori e della sua poetica, mostra come egli, sin dagli esordi, partecipi profondamente della riflessione poetico-letteraria del Romanticismo inglese e come, nella produzione matura, si possano ritrovare tratti e tematiche che l‟accomunano a filoni letterari diversi fra loro come quello della adventure story alla maniera di Rudyard Kipling o Henry Rider Haggard (per citare solo i nomi più famosi), alla poesia elegiaco-cavalleresca di Alfred Tennyson o a quella di Henry Newbolt, cantore dei grandi e piccoli eroi dell‟avventura imperiale britannica, alla poetica antimodernista di John Ruskin, William Morris e del gruppo dei Pre- raffaelliti. My research will demonstrate that, from his early involvement in the Abbey Theatre through to his late introspective novels set in Ireland, Dunsany throughout his life engages with Irish literary and cultural traditions.
