1) Betty Parris Reverend Parris's ten-year-old daughter. Betty falls into a strange stupor after Parris catches her and the other girls dancing in the forest with Tituba. Her illness and that of Ruth Putnam fuel the first rumors of witchcraft.

2) Mercy Lewis The servant in 's household. Mercy belongs to Abigail's group of girls. 3) Ruth Putnam The Putnams only surviving child out of eight. Like Betty Parris, Ruth falls into a strange sleep after Reverend Parris catches her and the other girls dancing in the woods at night. 4) Mary Warren The servant in John Proctor's house and a member of Abigail's group of girls. She is easily influenced by those around her. 5) Abigail Williams Reverend Parris's niece. Abigail was a servant for the Proctor household, but Elizabeth Proctor fired her after she found that Abigail was having an affair with her husband, John Proctor. Abigail is a good liar. 6) John Proctor Elizabeth Proctors husband, local farmer, Hidden affair with Abigail Williams, worries that his secret will be revealed and his name ruined if Abigail is found a fraud. 7) Elizabeth Proctor John Proctors wife, fired Abigail because she found out about her husbands affair. 8) Martha Corey Giles Coreys third wife, her reading habits lead to her being accused of witchcraft. 9) Giles Corey An old but eneretic farmer, filed a lot of law suits, eventually held contempt in court and stoned to death. 10) Rebecca Nurse Frances Nurses wife, liked by most of , Putnams accuse her of witchcraft and she refuses to confess. 11) Tituba Paris' black slave from barbados, claims to be a witch, preforms voodoo on comand. Gives the girls chicken blood in the woods 12) Thomas Putnam Husband to Ann Putnam, father to Ruth Putnam (one of the girls who is with Abigail in the woods). He is wealthy, a landowner, he opposes Proctor and Giles. 13) Ann Putnam Thomas Putnams wife, had 8 children and only 1 (Ruth) survived, she is convinced her children are killed by supernatural powers. 14) Francis Nurse Wealthy man in Salem, respected by most of the community, enemy of the Putnam family. 15) Judge Hathorne A judge who presides, along with Danforth, over the witch trials. 16) Herrick The marshal of Salem. Kind of a drunk 17) Cheever A man from Salem who acts as clerk of the court during the witch trials. He is upright and determined to do his duty for justice.

18) Deputy Governor Danforth The Deputy Governor of Massachusetts and the presiding judge at the witch trials. Honest and scrupu-lous, at least in his own mind, Danforth is convinced that he is doing right in rooting out witchcraft. 19) Reverend Parris The minister of Salem's church. Reverend Parris is a paranoid, power-hungry, yet oddly self-pitying figure. Many of the townsfolk, especially John Proctor, dislike him, and Parris is very concerned with building his position in the community.

20) Reverend Hale A young minister who is an expert on witchcraft. Reverend Hale is called in to Salem to examine Parris's daughter Betty. Hale is a committed Christian and hater of witchcraft. His critical mind and intelligence save him from falling into blind fervor. His arrival sets the hysteria in motion, although he later regrets his actions and attempts to save the lives of those accused.
