Darlene Rischling PRESIDENT UNIT 184 Bob Kutilek 2014 NEBRASKA REGIONAL – AUGUST 4-10 The Great One Looking for a player with a more impressive record than Bob Hamman? You have your work cut out for you. Bob won his first NABC title at the tender age of 23 (something called “The Reisinger”). Since then he has collected over 50 NABC titles. Add in many seconds plus ten Bermuda Bowl victories, other world titles and a multitude of team trial wins. You appreciate that Bob’s bridge resume is second to none. With Captain Richie Schwarz, partner Sam Lev and teammates John Schermer, Neil Chambers and Allan Graves, last month Bob seized the 2013 Senior USBF Championship. This gives Bob the opportunity to earn a title not on his list: the Senior Bowl. Of course, Bob has never played in it previously; the only reason this event has escaped him! I asked Bob for a recent hand to share with us. Most players would offer something with dazzling defense or masterful play. But, not Bob. Bob contributed a hand where he actually went wrong at the table. Yet, because Bob is as fascinated by our incredible game as anyone after all these years, he eschewed glory. Instead, Bob shared a hand with important lessons. With AQxx, AK96x, x, K8x, Bob opened 1H. His LHO bid 2NT for the minors, partner passed, and RHO bid a reluctant 3C. Bob doubled, LHO passed and Sam jumped to 4H. LHO thought a bit, then led a low heart. Bob’s dummy was: 107x, 105x, AQxxx, xx. Bob put up the 10 of hearts, and RHO covered with the queen. Bob won, then played a diamond to the queen, winning, and a club to the king, losing. LHO won, then played another diamond. Bob won the ace, pitching a spade, then played another club. When LHO won, he continued diamonds. RHO pitched a club – and now the hand could not be made. RHO could overruff dummy on the third round of clubs, and needless to say, spades were not a big source of tricks. Bob’s only consolation was that his counterpart went down 3 to his 2. “But I should have made it!” Bob told me. “I made my error at trick two.” He explained. “I know that RHO has 3C. It’s also a virtual certainty that the club ace is on my left. So, I need to lead a low club from hand toward dummy after winning the heart. RHO will win and lead a heart. I win my 9, then play the king from hand. LHO will win, and, unable to return trump, will shift to a diamond. I win the queen, spade to the ace (dropping the stiff king, as it turns out) and ruff my last club. Now I cash my diamond ace, pitching a spade loser and claim 4, giving up 2 clubs and a spade.” 1075 105x AQxxx xx K J9xxx xx QJx KJxxx xx AQxxx Jxx AQxx AK96x x K8x I’ve given this hand to a number of fine players.
