Fifth Sunday after Pentecost - Lighting Our Lamp

(Icon of Christ Casting Out the Garadene Demons)

God is light (fire) and He is so called by all the inspired Scripture (cf. Heb 12:29). The soul of each of us is a lamp. Now a lamp is wholly in darkness, even though it be filled with oil or tow or other combustible matter, until it receives fire and is kindled. So too the soul, though it may seem to be adorned with all virtues, yet does not receive the fire - in other words, has not received the divine nature and light - and is still unkindled and dark and its works are uncertain. All things must be tested and manifested by the light (cf. Eph 5:13).

The man whose soul’s lamp is still in darkness, that is, untouched by the divine fire, stands the more in need of a guide with a shining torch, who will discern his actions. As he has compassion for the faults he reveals in confession he will straightway straighten out whatever is crooked in his actions. Just as he who walks in the night cannot avoid stumbling, so he who has not yet seen the divine light cannot avoid falling into sin. As Christ says, “If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees this light. But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because he has not the light in him” (Jn 11:9-10). When He said “in him,” he meant the divine and immaterial light, for no one can possess the physical light in himself.

Praying for our Eparchial Summer Camps of St. Michael’s Camp at Madge Lake and of St. Volodymyr Camp at Ukrainian Park, Pike Lake:

We pray for safe and healthy summer camps – for safety in our activities, programs, health for our campers and staff. Bless all our campers to a wonderful experience as they grow closer to Jesus Christ while they are here. Bless all the staff to take of all the campers entrusted to their care over these summer camps. We ask you Heavenly Father to bless our summer camps, that they may be a place where our youth may be filled with growth in faith, fun and also be reminded of the beauty of God’s creation and the fellowship and relationships that are built through our summer camps. Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the blessings of our Eparchial summer camps, and to all those who have contributed with their time, talents and treasures towards these camps. Amen.

NEW TEEN CAMP at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Eparchial Park

St. Volodymyr Camp Committee has decided to expand all that it has to offer, by creating a teen camp! This camp is designated toward youth aged 14 to 17 years old. Camp will run Aug 11th – 15th, 2019. The purpose of this new camp is to help youth grow as young adults, through peer interaction, self reflection and faith. We want to inspire these youth to become more self sufficient by encouraging them to help organize the day-to-day camp activities and prepare their own meals. During this camp, teens will explore and experience the richness of Ukrainian Catholic Culture by leading educational programs in the form of games, religious activities, hikes, sports, arts & crafts, songs, swimming and other summer camp activities. We celebrate arts, culture and identity of the Ukrainian community with the goal of experiencing God through nature and the companionship of others. Youth will also have the opportunity to build their connection to a strong cultural identity as they explore the Ukrainian arts, culture and language. COST: $150.00 --- Registration and information at: https://stvolodymyrcamp.com/this-years-teen-camp/

Remembrance of St. Volodymyr The Great Equal-to-The-Apostles, Named Vasyl at Holy Baptism

The Day of Remembrance of the Holy and Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr of is marked on 15 (28) July. He was the grandson of the Holy Princess Olha, who is remembered on 24 July.

Prince Volodymyr did not only convert to Christianity himself, but also contributed to the fact that Christianity became the state religion of Kyivan Rus, now . Therefore, July 28 is a Ukrainian national holiday – the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus.

The future Prince was born in 962 or 963 in Volyn. The period of his reign in Kyiv lasted for 35 years - from 980 to 1015.

In 988 Volodymyr was baptized taking the Christian name of Vasyl.

After his baptism, Volodymyr ordered the people of Kyiv to get baptized and to throw pagan idols into the Dnieper. On the Prince’s order numerous churches were built, including the Church of the Tithes in Kyiv.

But Christianity dawned on Ukrainian lands long before Volodymyr's baptism. The spread of Christianity in the Ukrainian lands dates back to the first century, linked with legendary travel to the Kyivan hills of St. Andrew the First-Called; his stay with the mission in Crimea is generally not questioned by historians. There are clearer historical data on the first Christian martyrs in Crimea, in particular, one of the first Roman Pontiff, Pope Clement I was martyred. Later his head was found by Sts. Cyril and Methodius and now his scull is in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (Ukraine). Various sources tell about the baptism of Kyivan Prince Askold in 860.

New rise of Christianity in Rus-Ukraine was initiated by the Holy Princess Olga, which is recognized as an equal to the Apostles. Therefore the Baptism of Rus-Ukraine by Prince Volodymyr was a continuation of a long process of of Kyivan Rus.

The Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus - July 28 – became an official state holiday pursuant to the decree of the President of Ukraine in 2008. It should be noted that July 28 is the day of Prince Volodymyr’s repose, and his baptism most likely took place on August 14 (new style).

ARE YOU DOING GOD’s WORK?: An eye witness account from New York City, on a cold day in December some years ago – a little boy, about 10 years old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold.

A lady approached the young boy and said, “My, but you’re in such deep thought staring in that window!”

“I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,” was the boy’s reply.

The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get a half dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her.

She took the little fellow to the back part of the store, and removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel.

By this time the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy’s feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes.

She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, “No doubt you will be more comfortable now.”

As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her, “Are you God’s wife?”
