Under Freeze’s direction, sophomore Ryan Aplin exploded onto the scene in 2010 to emerge as a Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year candidate. Aplin not only broke the ASU records for total offense, passing yards, passing and completions, he posted numbers that rank among the top 10 in Sun Belt Conference history in the same categories. CHAMPAIGN, Ill.GAME - Arkansas State put1 up 350 yards of total offense but dropped its season opener 33-15 at Illi- nois. Frankie Jackson scored the only touchdown of the game for the Red Wolves with 3:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. Jackson led ASU’s rushing attack with 39 yards on the ground. Dwayne Frampton recorded 99 yards receiving and quarterback Ryan Aplin went 20-of- 32 for 290 yards to lead the Red Wolves passing game. Amos Draper dropped Illinois running back Jason Ford a yard deep in the Illini end zone to give the Red Wolves a safety and cut the Illinois lead to five, 7-2, at the 14:02 mark of the second quarter. ASU took the lead with a pair of career-long field goals from Bobby Zalud and Brian Davis to go up 8-7 in the second quarter. However, IU quarter back Nathan Scheelhasse com- pleted a pass to Darius Millines for a 45-yard score with 1:24 left in the first half that started a run of 26 unan- swered points by the Illini. Defensively, Nathan Herrold, Kelcie McCray and Justin Robertson led the Red Wolves with eight tackles each. Brandon Joiner, Elroy Brown and Don Jones each had a quarterback sack for A-State.
