Riassunto/Abstract Boll. Malacol., 51: 22-46 (1, 30/05/2015) The original descriptions of the Mediterranean taxa in the order Sepiolida (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) with notes on the validity of the specific name Sepiola rondeletii Leach, 1817. Giambattista Bello Abstract The original descriptions of all the Mediterranean taxa in the order Sepiolida are reported and discussed. The correct scientific name, authorship and publication date for these taxa are also established. The 27 taxa included in the present work are: family Sepiolidae; subfamily Sepiolinae, genus Sepiola and its species rondeletii, aurantiaca, steenstrupiana, intermedia, robusta, ligulata, affinis, bursadhaesa; genus Sepietta and its species oweniana, obscura, neglecta; genus Rondeletiola and its species minor; subfamily Heteroteuthinae, genus Heteroteuthis and its species dispar; genus Stoloteuthis and its species leucoptera; subfamily Rossiinae, genus Rossia and its species macrosoma, genus Neorossia and its species caroli. Moreover Sepiola rondeletii Leach, 1817 was declared nomen protectum, whereas Sepia sepiola Linnaeus, 1758 was declared nomen oblitum. Riassunto [Le descrizioni originali dei taxa mediterranei dell’ordine Sepiolida (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) con note sulla validità del nome specifico Sepiola rondeletii Leach, 1817]. In questo lavoro sono riportate e discusse le descrizioni originali di tutti i 27 taxa mediterranei dell’ordine Sepiolida. Di questi taxa sono stati anche definiti i nomi scientifici corretti, con le relative paternità e date di pubblicazione. I taxa sono: famiglia Sepiolidae; sottofamiglia Sepiolinae, genere Sepiola con le specie rondeletii, aurantiaca, steenstrupiana, intermedia, robusta, ligulata, affinis, bursadhaesa; genere Sepietta con le specie oweniana, obscura, neglecta, genere Rondeletiola con la specie minor; sottofamiglia Heteroteuthinae, genere Heteroteuthis con la specie dispar; genere Stoloteuthis con la specie leucoptera; sottofamiglia Rossiinae, genere Rossia con la specie macrosoma; genere Neorossia con la specie caroli. Inoltre, il binome Sepiola rondeletii Leach, 1817 viene dichiarato nomen protectum, mentre Sepia sepiola Linnaeus, 1758 viene dichiarato nomen oblitum. Japetus Steenstrup (1857) Abstract. The subfamily Sepiolinae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda: Sepiolidae), currently containing the genera Sepiola Leach, 1817, Euprymna Steenstrup, 1887, Inioteuthis Verrill, 1881, Rondeletiola Naef, 1921 and Sepietta Naef, 1912, is characterized by the hectocotylization of the left dorsal arm, i.e., its transformation into a copulatory organ thanks to modifications of sucker/pedicel elements. The hectocotylus morphology varies to a great extent across genera and species. In particular, one to several pedicels in its proximal third lose their sucker and become highly and diversely modified in shape to constitute a copulatory apparatus. An evolutionary gradient was observed in the copulatory apparatus morphology, from the simple modification into a papilla of just one pedicel from the third element of the ventral sucker row (some nominal species of Euprymna) to a quite complex structure involving several variously modified pedicels from both the ventral and dorsal sucker rows (Inioteuthis).

A new sepioline species, Sepiola boletzkyi sp. nov. (Cephalopoda: Sepiolidae), is described based on two specimens from the Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean). The type specimens are lodged in the Ege University Faculty of Fisheries Museum of Izmir (Turkey). The new species belongs to the Sepiola atlantica group sensu Naef, hence it is compared with the species in this group, namely Sepiola affinis, Sepiola atlantica, Sepiola bursadhaesa, Sepiola intermedia, Sepiola robusta, Sepiola rondeletii, Sepiola steenstrupiana and Sepiola tridens. The male of S. boletzkyi sp. nov. differs from all the others in having the combination of homomorphous ventral arm tips, eight enlarged suckers, subdivided into two groups, in the dorsal row of the distal part of the hectocotylus and a dorsal lobe complementing the copulatory apparatus. In all the cases, the male 17 moved quickly toward the female holding her with his arms by the middle of the ventral region 18 of the mantle. The male, situated below the female, introduced his pair of dorsal arms (the left 19 dorsal arm is hectocotylized and passes the spermatophores) in the mantle cavity of the female, 20 while grasping her by the ventral region with his laterodorsal pair of arms and by the neck with 21 his lateroventral pair, sometimes introducing it into the female’s mantle cavity. The male 22 showed the same pattern of coloration during all the entire mating process, whereas the female 23 changed slowly and successively her chromatic pattern.

They are distributed into three subfamilies: Sepiolinae (13 species), Rossinae (2) and Heteroteuthinae (2). In this review, the updated list of the Mediterranean sepiolids is given along with the species type locality, the first documented occurrence in this basin and the present geographical distribution. Sepiola atlantica and Heteroteuthis atlantis are excluded from the above mentioned list. Although both were previously reported from the Mediterranean, their presence is erroneous. Moreover, patently erroneous information about both the bathymetric and geographical distributions of Sepiola rondeletii is revised. The extreme rarity of Sepiola aurantiaca and the comparatively recent entrance into the Mediterranean and establishment of Stoloteuthis leucoptera are discussed. The genesis of the Mediterranean sepiolid-fauna is dealt with and, in particular, the reasons that determined its comparatively wide diversity are examined. They are to be traced back to both the mode of life and the reproductive biology of these cephalopods. In connection with the latter topic, the high degree of endemism in the Subfamily Sepiolinae is taken into consideration. As a baseline for future studies that will enhance the knowledge of this fauna, we have compiled a checklist combining the existing published data with original data from a recent research. Examination of sampled material and a review of the relevant literature revealed the presence of 354 mollusc species. Twelve species have been recorded for the first time in Montenegrin waters, 7 species are of non-native origin while 14 taxa are recognized as endangered and threatened, according to the IUCN Red List and the Barcelona/Berne Conventions. A comparison of our results with those of the neighbouring seas indicates that mollusc fauna is insufficiently studied, but we should bear in mind that the number of recorded species in relation to the size of the researched area points to a rich malacofauna zone. Riassunto Il presente lavoro propone una sinossi della ricerca teutologica condotta nel Mediterraneo orientale, a est del meridiano 23°E, vale a dire nel bacino di Levante, nel Mar Egeo e nel Mare di Marmara, a partire da Aristotele. Ricerche sistematiche sulla teutofauna di quest’area sono state svolte a far capo dai primi anni ’90. I più importanti studi sono stati rivolti alla sistematica, alla distribuzione geografica, alla scienza della pesca, alla biologia della riproduzione, allo sviluppo larvale e all’analisi dei contenuti stomacali di predatori teutofagi. In totale, fino a oggi sono stati registrati nel distretto geografico in questione 54 specie di cefalo- podi: 4 sepiidi, 13 sepiolidi, 23 teutidi e 14 ottopodi. Un rilievo particolare è rivestito dai migranti lessepsia- ni provenienti da Mar Rosso (il sepiide Sepia pharaonis, il teutide Sepioteuthis lessoniana e gli ottopodi Oc- topus cf. aegina/kagoshimensis e Octopus cyanea), le cui prime segnalazioni mediterranee sono occorse proprio nel bacino orientale. In una tabella riassuntiva, è riportato l’elenco delle specie del Mediterraneo orientale, con le referenze bibliografiche attinenti e il relativo soggetto di studio.

The Mediterranean molluscan fauna is widely studied, and is largely considered as the best known in the world. However, mostly due to a severe bias in the geo- graphical samplings, a difference is observed between the knowledge on the central and the western areas and that available for the Levantine Sea. Based on literature reports (spanning over a period of more than 150 years) and extensive fieldwork (altogether covering more than 20 years), a first updated check-list of polypla- cophorans, scaphopods and cephalopods from Lebanon (eastern Mediterranean Sea) is provided here. Leptochiton bedullii Dell’Angelo & Palazzi, 1986, Parachiton africanus (Nierstrasz, 1906), Chiton phaseolinus Monterosato, 1879, Lepidochitona caprearum (Scacchi, 1836), Lepidochitona monterosatoi Kaas & Van Belle, 1981 and specimens ascribed to the Sepioteuthis lessoniana Férussac in Lesson, 1831 complex are new records for Lebanon. The occurrence of Alloteuthis subulata (Lamarck, 1798) and Acanthochitona discrepans (Brown, 1827) is excluded as the species records are based on a possible misidentification and a misreading, respectively.
