There is no shell. The tiny MOLLUSCA solenogasters have bristle-like spicules over Chitons, bivalves, sea snails, sea almost the whole body, a groove on the underside of the body, and no gills. INTRODUCTION The SCal"CÎty of ecological knowledge on many species of cephalopods is certainly due to the technical problems of field observation and sampling. Information on distribution and abundance come mainly from CUITent research of biologi cal oceanography, fishing activities, analysis on stomach contents of mmine mammals and pelagic fishes. Recently, observations from submersibles have provided very interesting data about several aspects of the biology and ecology of cephalopods (Vecchione & Roper, 1991). Cephalopods are captured commercialy and for research purposes using a valiety of gears, primarily jigging machines, trawls and drift nets (Roper, 1991). While jigging, pela gic seining and potting are less destructive techniques that target specific sizes and species, trawling and drift netting are non-selective methods as far as size and specieS' are concer ned. -

The International bottom trawl survey (the MEDITS programme) has been designed from a European Commission’s initiative to produce biological data on the demersal resources along the coasts of the four Mediterranean countries of the European Union (Spain, France, Italy and Greece). The main objective was to obtain independent knowledge useful for the fishery management, in an area where it is difficult to follow in detail the exploitation patterns of the fishing fleets. In Italian seas, before 1985, there was no research at national level on biological aspect and assessment of demersal resources. Within the framework of the first national plan (1985-1988) of the Law 41/82, three main research groups to assess demersal resources were organized: Tyrrhenyan group, Adriatic and Ionian group and Sicily group. All the seas were covered, with the exception of Ionian part of Sicily. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The intensive exploitation of the continental shelf has lead to a search of new fisheries resources in deeper waters. Four seasonal experimental surveys were carried out on the deep-waters of the Eastern Ionian Sea by Greek and Italian commercial trawlers from September 1999 to September 2000.Potential targets included deepwater species of fishes, shrimps and cephalopods. During the 4 cruises, a total of 26 species of cephalopods in 10 families were recorded, including 10 oegopsid squids, 3 myopsid squids, 5 octopods, 2 cuttlefishes and 6 sepiolids. Deep-water trawling resulted in the finding of some uncommon species such as Ancistroteuthis lichtensteini, Ctenopteryx sicula and Galiteuthis armata, which were recorded for the first time in the study area. Extensions of depth range were recorded for several species. The results of multivariate analyses, based on Bray-Curtis similarity indices, showed the presence of two clear associations: one consisting of hauls carried out at depths 300-550 m, where Sepietta oweniana, Todaropsis eblanae and Loligo forbesi are the most abundant species, and another with deeper hauls (up to 770 m depth) dominated by Neorossia caroli, Pteroctopus tetracirrhus and Todarodes sagittatus. -

Japetus Steenstrup (1857) Abstract. The subfamily Sepiolinae (Mollusca: Cephalopoda: Sepiolidae), currently containing the genera Sepiola Leach, 1817, Euprymna Steenstrup, 1887, Inioteuthis Verrill, 1881, Rondeletiola Naef, 1921 and Sepietta Naef, 1912, is characterized by the hectocotylization of the left dorsal arm, i.e., its transformation into a copulatory organ thanks to modifications of sucker/pedicel elements. The hectocotylus morphology varies to a great extent across genera and species. In particular, one to several pedicels in its proximal third lose their sucker and become highly and diversely modified in shape to constitute a copulatory apparatus. An evolutionary gradient was observed in the copulatory apparatus morphology, from the simple modification into a papilla of just one pedicel from the third element of the ventral sucker row (some nominal species of Euprymna) to a quite complex structure involving several variously modified pedicels from both the ventral and dorsal sucker rows (Inioteuthis). -

A new sepioline species, Sepiola boletzkyi sp. nov. (Cephalopoda: Sepiolidae), is described based on two specimens from the Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean). The type specimens are lodged in the Ege University Faculty of Fisheries Museum of Izmir (Turkey). The new species belongs to the Sepiola atlantica group sensu Naef, hence it is compared with the species in this group, namely Sepiola affinis, Sepiola atlantica, Sepiola bursadhaesa, Sepiola intermedia, Sepiola robusta, Sepiola rondeletii, Sepiola steenstrupiana and Sepiola tridens. The male of S. boletzkyi sp. nov. differs from all the others in having the combination of homomorphous ventral arm tips, eight enlarged suckers, subdivided into two groups, in the dorsal row of the distal part of the hectocotylus and a dorsal lobe complementing the copulatory apparatus.
