Objective:

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to distinguish the difference between a utopia and a dystopia. Students will be able to identify 3 characteristics of a dystopian society and cite evidence from a movie clip to support their answer. Essential Questions….. ● How much should the government be able to control your individual rights for the benefit of society? ● Could something intended for the good of society really be bad? ● What makes an ideal society? ● Can one person’s influence make a difference? ● What are dystopia and utopia and their relationship to science fiction?

Characteristics of Dystopian Society ● Propaganda is used to control citizens ● Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted ● Figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society ● Citizens are under constant surveillance and have a fear of the outside world ● Citizens live in a dehumanized state Characteristics of Dystopian Society

● The natural world is banished and distrusted ● Citizens conform to uniform expectations ● Individuality is bad ● Society is just an illusion of a perfect utopian world
