A sojourn in jail and a trip to Nigeria among other tasks have kept be behind. When I solicited your help for our struggle almost two months ago, I did not ex- pect so creative and fulsome a response. All of us are inspired by your wondei-ful support and the Committee is busily engaged in the preparations forJanuary 27th. I hope I can convey our appreciation to you with the warmth which we feel it. In the midst of one of my usual crowded sojourns in New York, I had the op- portunity to hear the play, “Kicks and Co.” by Oscar Brown at the invitation of the Nemiroffs, at whose home I have previously been a guest.2 I learned of your in- terest in it and I am deeply pleased.

  • Solomon and Sinatra: the Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case a Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016
1 Solomon and Sinatra: The Song of Songs and Romance in the Church Robert Case A Sunday School Class Faith Presbyterian Church Tacoma, Washington 2016 Part 3 There are a multitude of biblical themes expressed by non-believing Jewish songwriters in the American Songbook, but one fine example for our purposes in this class is the theme of: no Sex before marriage “Love and Marriage” In 1955 Jimmy Van Heusen (a Methodist) with Jewish lyricist Sammy Cahn wrote “Love and Marriage” which was introduced (ironically) by Frank Sinatra in the television production of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. It is the biggest hit to ever come out of a television special. In 1956, the song, "Love and Marriage" won the Emmy Award for Best Musical Contribution from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The Cahn inspired clever lyrics euphemistically call “sex” “love” and claim that mom told dad you can’t have sex (“love”) without marriage. The song was used as the theme song for the long-running (1987–97) FOX television sitcom Married... with Children. Additionally, the song has been used in several national commercial campaigns. “Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell you brother you can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, love and marriage, it's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary. Try, try, try to separate them it's an illusion Try, try, try, and you will only come to this conclusion.

  • When Quincy Jones
BY CHRIS HEATH PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT MAXWELL 4 days ago Frank Sinatra. Michael Jackson. Ray Charles. Malcolm X. Elon Musk. Truman Capote. Buzz Aldrin. Prince. Tupac. Even Leni Riefenstahl. Quincy Jones has run with them all. Chris Heath stays up late with the 84-year-old music legend who has a tale to go with every famous name. ......................................... "I feel like I'm just starting," Quincy Jones explains as he slowly takes a seat in the grand living room of his hilltop Bel-Air mansion, a wide arc of nighttime Los Angeles visible through the windows in front of him. "It seems like at 84 all the things you used to wonder about come clear to you." TRENDING THIS VERY SECOND entertainment Quincy Jones Has a Story About That So he begins. He begins talking about his life. It's a life punctuated by so many disparate encounters and achievements and circumstances that it is hard to believe they are the experiences of a single man. There is a lot of talking to do. 1. The Oscar was awarded in 1994 for his humanitarian work. He won the Emmy for the soundtrack to Roots and the Tony for the revival of the musical The Color Purple. He has won 28 Grammy Awards. There is the career, of course: the jazz musician, the arranger, the record executive, the soundtrack composer, the solo artist, the producer of the biggest pop album in history, the entrepreneur, the media magnate, the film and TV producer, the philanthropist…and on and on. Jones is one of just a handful of people who have accomplished the EGOT—winner of at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

Famous New Yorker Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy Davis Jr. struggled with racism for much of his career, but his success as a performer and celebrity helped Americans envision racial equality in the world of entertainment. Samuel George Davis Jr. was born in Harlem, New York City, on December 8, 1925. Sammy Davis Sr. was a dancer in a touring troupe led by Will Mastin. When his marriage broke up, Davis took Sammy Jr. on the road with the Mastin troupe. Junior was a precocious mimic of his father’s and Mastin’s dance moves and became their partner in the Will Mastin Trio. To dodge child labor laws, Mastin sometimes claimed that Junior was an adult midget. In 1933, Mastin and Davis took the seven year old to a Brooklyn movie studio to make his fi lm debut in the short subject Rufus Jones for President.
