Bartonia No. 69: 20–46, 2016 Flora of Burden Hill Forest: a Checklist for a Salem County, New Jersey Landscape TED GORDON1 AND JOSEPH ARSENAULT2 1Pine Barrens Inventories, 31 Burrs Mill Road, Southampton, NJ 08088 2961 Clark Avenue, Franklinville, NJ 08322 ABSTRACT. We provide a checklist of native and non-native plants growing within a region of Salem County described as Burden Hill Forest. This list is the result of more than a dozen surveys that we conducted between 2001 and 2012. 530 distinct taxa (106 families, 303 genera, 520 species, and 10 varieties) were identified within the forests and meadows found between the villages of Alloway and Stow Creek. Included are habitat descriptions and site locations for plants of special interest. A landscape description is provided that distinguishes this forest and its flora from other New Jersey Outer Coastal Plain forests. INTRODUCTION Salem County, New Jersey is not a region one thinks of as supporting large contiguous forests. Cleared and farmed since the late 1600s (Smith 1877), Salem County is best known for vistas of bucolic fields and expansive tidal marshes. Early colonial farmers learned that the soils between the Delaware River and Delaware Bay were excellent for crops and livestock. Soon after the Finns, Swedes, and English gained a foothold, the county’s forests yielded to the progress of the ax and stock animals, “Their lands and meadows are rich, and production of any kind, natural to the climate, plenty” (Smith 1877). Few forests survived the initial clearing, resulting in a landscape that was mapped by the 1880s without any woodland larger than 50 acres (Vermeule 1884, 1900). -

Common Name: DRUMMOND’S YELLOW-EYED GRASS Scientific Name: Xyris drummondii Malme Other Commonly Used Names: none Previously Used Scientific Names: none Family: Xyridaceae (yellow-eyed grass) Rarity Ranks: G3/S1 State Legal Status: Special Concern Federal Legal Status: none Federal Wetland Status: OBL Description: Perennial herb usually occurring in clumps; base of the plant with a shiny, reddish-brown patch, often buried in sand. Leaves 1¼ - 4 inches (3 - 10 cm) long, less than ¼ inch (1.5 - 5 mm) wide, flat, leaf bases overlapping and forming a fan. Flower stalk 1½ - 8 inches (4 - 25 cm) tall, ribbed, with a leaf-like sheath, as long as or slightly shorter than most of the leaves, enclosing the base of the stalk. Cone-like flower spike - inch (3 - 8 mm) long, oval, solitary at the top of the flower stalk, composed of many tan, papery, rounded, overlapping bracts, each bract with a small green patch; spikes usually produce only 1 flower per day. Flower with 3 yellow petals, rising from under a bract, opening in the morning and withering around noon; sepals are hidden under the bracts. Similar Species: Yellow-eyed grasses are very similar; this species is distinguished by the reddish-brown patch at the base of the plant and by the sheath of the flower stalk which is about the same length as the leaves. Related Rare Species: Harper’s yellow-eyed grass (Xyris scabrifolia, Special Concern) has a fleshy, pink-purple base; a twisted flower stalk with a sheath shorter than the leaves; and rounded petals. Its leaves are covered with tiny bumps which give them a rough texture and a glazed look. -

Hook., glaucous white lettuce, is a perennial member of the Asteraceae or composite family. It is considered globally secure (G5), but in New England, it is known only from northern Maine, primarily along the St. John River. There are also several occurrences along the Aroostook River. Ice scour and flooding are common annual disturbances on these rivers. Many of the N. racemosus populations were discovered during survey efforts for Pedicularis furbishiae (Furbish’s lousewort), and both species, as well as many other rarities, may be found at some sites. In other parts of the country, N. racemosus grows in prairie communities. There are currently 31 extant occurrences in Maine, 28 of these along the St. John River, and three on the Aroostook River. There are four historic occurrences, all on the Aroostook River, and one extirpated population on the Aroostook River. Nabalus racemosus is a species of Special Concern in Maine, where it is ranked S3. Other nearby areas from which it is recorded include New Brunswick (S3), Nova Scotia (S1), Newfoundland Island (S1S2), Labrador (SR), Quebec (SR), Vermont (SR), New Jersey (SH), New York (SX), and Pennsylvania (SX). Little is known regarding the biology of Nabalus racemosus. -

The species lacks the scapose inflorescence characteristic of Xyridaceae and, having the gestalt of a rhizomatous bromeliad, it is seemingly aberrant in the family. However, closer examination confirms features consistent with the family and the previously noted morphological similarities to Orectanthe. Details of inflorescence structure and floral morphology are presented and compared to other genera of Xyridaceae. Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Special Plants - Tracking List -2018
MISSISSIPPI NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM SPECIAL PLANTS - TRACKING LIST -2018- Approximately 3300 species of vascular plants (fern, gymnosperms, and angiosperms), and numerous non-vascular plants may be found in Mississippi. Many of these are quite common. Some, however, are known or suspected to occur in low numbers; these are designated as species of special concern, and are listed below. There are 495 special concern plants, which include 4 non- vascular plants, 28 ferns and fern allies, 4 gymnosperms, and 459 angiosperms 244 dicots and 215 monocots. An additional 100 species are designated “watch” status (see “Special Plants - Watch List”) with the potential of becoming species of special concern and include 2 fern and fern allies, 54 dicots and 44 monocots. This list is designated for the primary purposes of : 1) in environmental assessments, “flagging” of sensitive species that may be negatively affected by proposed actions; 2) determination of protection priorities of natural areas that contain such species; and 3) determination of priorities of inventory and protection for these plants, including the proposed listing of species for federal protection. Rothrock, Ph.D. Taylor University Upland, IN 46989-1001 Introduction Since the early nineteenth century the Indiana landscape has undergone a massive transformation (Jackson 1997). In the pre-settlement period, Indiana was an almost unbroken blanket of forests, prairies, and wetlands. Much of the land was cleared, plowed, or drained for lumber, the raising of crops, and a range of urban and industrial activities. Indiana’s native biota is now restricted to relatively small and often isolated tracts across the State. This fragmentation and reduction of the State’s biological diversity has challenged Hoosiers to look carefully at how to monitor further changes within our remnant natural communities and how to effectively conserve and even restore many of these valuable places within our State. To meet this monitoring, conservation, and restoration challenge, one needs to develop a variety of appropriate analytical tools. Ideally these techniques should be simple to learn and apply, give consistent results between different observers, and be repeatable. Floristic Assessment, which includes metrics such as the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and Mean C values, has gained wide acceptance among environmental scientists and decision-makers, land stewards, and restoration ecologists in Indiana’s neighboring states and regions: Illinois (Taft et al. 1997), Michigan (Herman et al. 1996), Missouri (Ladd 1996), and Wisconsin (Bernthal 2003) as well as northern Ohio (Andreas 1993) and southern Ontario (Oldham et al.
