The economic forecasts are being adjusted downwards on a weekly basis. Although the film industry is still doing well at present; winter time also means time to go to the cinema, after all, and the German Federal Film Fund helps make the film location Germany less susceptible to crisis. But if the augurs prove to be right, and film financing also starts to slow down, what are we to do? Planning Abu Dhabi: From Arish Village to a Global, Sustainable, Arab Capital City By Alamira Reem Bani Hashim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Elizabeth S. Macdonald, Chair Professor Michael Southworth Professor Greig Crysler Summer 2015 © Alamira Reem Bani Hashim Abstract Planning Abu Dhabi: From Arish Village to a Global, Sustainable Arab Capital City by Alamira Reem Bani Hashim Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor Elizabeth S. Macdonald, Chair The overarching objective of this research project is to explore and document the urban history of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is organized as a comparative study of urban planning and design processes in Abu Dhabi during three major periods of the city’s development following the discovery of oil: (1) 1960-1966: Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule (2) 1966-2004: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule; and (3) 2004-2013: Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s rule. The intention of this study is to go beyond a typical historical narrative of sleepy village-turned-metropolis, to compare and contrast the different visions of each ruler and his approach to development; to investigate the role and influence of a complex network of actors, including planning institutions, architects, developers, construction companies and various government agencies; to examine the emergence and use of comprehensive development plans and the policies and values underlying them; as well as to understand the decision-making processes and design philosophies informing urban planning, in relation to the political and economic context of each period.

Journal of Legal, Ethical and Regulatory Issues Volume 23, Issue 6, 2020 TWOFOUR54 MEDIA FREE ZONE: PROMOTING MEDIA INDUSTRY IN A CENSORED COUNTRY Khoa Tran, New York University Abu Dhabi Anh Tuyet Nguyen, Nguyen Chi Thanh Gifted High School ABSTRACT According to twofour54's official website, acknowledging the spirit of H.H Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan initiated Abu Dhabi's 2030 Vision with the hope to build a sustainable and diversified economy with a strong recognition of international openness. To achieve this objective, he recognized that media is not only a source of mere entertainment and information; it also plays a vital role in national development and national branding in an international context. Media reflects citizens' collective voice and brings UAE culture and presence to join hands with the modern world's international growth. One of the 2030 sub- visions is to make Abu Dhabi a globally recognized hub for the media industry. However, the United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi face a conflict in interest between liberal media promotion and national censorship, which protects the UAE's political-cultural stability. To solve this conflict, the Abu Dhabi authority established twofour54 in Abu Dhabi. This research would use film production as a case study for twofour54 regarding solving the media-censorship conflicts. Keywords: Censorship, Economic Free Zone, Film Production, Islamic, Media, United Arab Emirates. INTRODUCTION The current development of the media industry in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the establishment of the media free zone twofour54 were foreseen by the UAE's national father H.H Sheikh Zayed's vision.

  • Chazen Society Fellow Interest Paper Media in Emerging Markets
Chazen Society Fellow Interest Paper Media in Emerging Markets BRIAN HINDO MBA ’10 The state of the media business in the United States isn’t very pretty. Traditional media companies, especially those with legacy assets in print publishing, have been struggling to retool their business models for the digital age. In emerging markets, however, the story is different. In these markets, both old and new media are booming, partly because of economics and partly because of technology. As the global economic recovery hastens, media markets in developing nations are likely to grab a bigger share of worldwide revenue. And companies based in developing nations are poised to move from national champions to global leaders. Throughout the developing world, macroeconomic growth has led to increased wealth and a burgeoning consumer class. This, in turn, has attracted the interest of advertisers both local and global. With more disposable income, the demand for news and entertainment has also increased. Emerging economies from Brazil to India have seen a proliferation of television and print outlets in the past decade. In the United States and other developed markets, the widespread availability of high-speed Internet, especially via broadband, helped make the Web the ubiquitous, disruptive force it is today. Since many developing markets lack much broadband infrastructure, Internet penetration rates among households in those countries remains relatively low. As a result, “old technologies” such as print and radio still have a significant value proposition for media companies and consumers. In fact, in places such as sub-Saharan Africa, where broadband fiber hasn’t been widely laid, we see next-generation wireless and satellite technologies coexisting with an abundance of print outlets.

  • 'Cultures of Journalism' in Arabic- and English-Language Newspapers Within the United Arab Emirates
‘Cultures of Journalism’ Journal of Middle East Media Vol 9, Fall 2013 ‘Cultures of Journalism’ in Arabic- and English-language Newspapers within the United Arab Emirates Matt J. Duffy Adjunct Professor Georgia State University Atlanta, GA 30302 [email protected] Abstract This article examines the “cultures of journalism” at two newspapers in the United Arab Emirates, the Arabic-language Al Ittihad and English-language The National. Founded in 2008, the latter newspaper promised to bring Western-style journalism to the Middle East, so the analysis helps to examine whether it reached this goal. The author and an Arab-language researcher used a “frame analysis” to examine a sample month of coverage (April 2011) during the “Arab Spring.” The researchers looked for examples of four main concepts based on Kovach and Rosenthiel’s Principles of Journalism: Verification and commitment to truth-telling, holding those in power accountable, providing a space for public criticism and compromise, and comprehensive and proportional reporting. The analysis found that the English-language paper covered the news according to those principles far more than the Arabic-language outlet. But The National deviated from these principles when covering “sensitive” subjects such as actions taken by the nation’s security forces. The author concludes with questions about how the different approaches of the English and Arab press may affect the audience’s culture. Keywords: Arab spring, Arab press, Arab media, journalism, censorship, self-censorship, United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, The National, Al Ittihad, principles of journalism, elements of journalism, frame analysis, cultures of journalism 24 ‘Cultures of Journalism’ Journal of Middle East Media Vol 9, Fall 2013 Introduction Although journalists adhere to some standard practices and conventions globally, specific influences define the practice of journalism within various nations.

The Asian Conference on Media and Mass Communication 2013 Official Conference Proceedings Osaka, Japan Inside Newsroom: Social Media & News Production in the UAE Sabir Haque, Seena Biju Manipal University Dubai, United Arab Emirates 0111 The Asian Conference on Media and Mass Communication 2013 Official Conference Proceedings 2013 Abstract News Coverage in the Middle East has managed to break its shackles of censorship to a large extent in the last two decades. In the backdrop of Arab Spring and with the rise of Social Media, there is a genuine lack of understanding to what transpires inside a newsroom (Pintak, 2009). Although Agenda Setting which drives both journalist and public opinion has been analysed too often, yet they rarely follow up by going inside the newsroom and asking reporters and editors how they constructed their stories and how social media has influenced the news gathering tools (Klinenberg, 2005). This study will help understand the use of Social Media by the reporters for news coverage and its limitations. The Study will draw connections between the political economy of the journalistic field, the organisational structure for news production, new communication technologies, and the qualities of content created by media workers. It will also help to demarcate the tools of social media and their mode of preferences among the journalists in the UAE. iafor The International Academic Forum www.iafor.org 1 The Asian Conference on Media and Mass Communication 2013 Official Conference Proceedings Osaka, Japan 1. INTRODUCTION Middle East finds itself trapped in the cataclysm of Social Media Revolution. We know that something like a “revolutionary bandwagon” occurred in Tunisia beginning in December 2011, following a seemingly insignificant event, namely, the self-immolation of a provincial fruit vendor after his business was shut down by the local police.
