Effects of Art Styles on Video Game Narratives UNIVERSITY OF TURKU Department of Future Technologies Master's Thesis July 2018 Leena Hölttä UNIVERSITY OF TURKU Department of Future Technologies HÖLTTÄ, LEENA Effects of Art Styles on Video Game Narratives Master's thesis, 76 pages, 29 appendix pages Computer Science August 2018 The effect of an art style on a video game's narrative is not widely studied and not much is known about how the general player base views the topic. This thesis attempts to answer this question through the use of two different surveys, a general theory related one, and one based upon images and categorization and a visual novel based interview that aims at gaining a further understanding of the subject. The general results point to the art style creating and emphasizing a narrative's mood and greatly enhancing the player experience. Based on these results a simple framework ASGDF was created to help beginning art directors and designers to create the most fitting style for their narrative.

  • Press Start: Video Games and Art
Press Start: Video Games and Art BY ERIN GAVIN Throughout the history of art, there have been many times when a new artistic medium has struggled to be recognized as an art form. Media such as photography, not considered an art until almost one hundred years after its creation, were eventually accepted into the art world. In the past forty years, a new medium has been introduced and is increasingly becoming more integrated into the arts. Video games, and their rapid development, provide new opportunities for artists to convey a message, immersing the player in their work. However, video games still struggle to be recognized as an art form, and there is much debate as to whether or not they should be. Before I address the influences of video games on the art world, I would like to pose one question: What is art? One definition of art is: “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”1 If this definition were the only criteria, then video games certainly fall under the category. It is not so simple, however. In modern times, the definition has become hazy. Many of today’s popular video games are most definitely not artistic, just as not every painting in existence is considered successful. Certain games are held at a higher regard than others. There is also the problem of whom and what defines works as art. Many gamers consider certain games as works of art while the average person might not believe so.

However, this does not guarantee successful adaptations from one form to another.

  • Limitations in Early Video Game Music and Their Aesthetic Impact Think
Limitations in Early Video Game Music and Their Aesthetic Impact View the audio examples given throughout this paper in this accompanying Youtube Playlist: https://bit.ly/2IzqdmX Think back to the first time you picked up a video game controller. You may remember the graphics or art style of that game, a favorite character, or that one level that you were stuck on for hours on end. Along with these memories, it’s quite likely that you thought of the infectious melodies that accompanied your virtual adventures. Undoubtedly, video game music is one of the most memorable and essential parts of this medium that we hold so dear. It is important to note, however, that many of these soundtracks which we recall so fondly were made in the presence of technological challenges. The composers of video game music for the home consoles of the late 1980s and 90s overcame the limitations of these early systems by viewing what on the surface appeared to be constraints as challenges that would guide and enhance their creativity rather than control and restrict it. The choices made to combat or circumvent these technological limitations took place primarily in the areas of organization and timbre. It is in these areas that the limitations faced by early video game music composers have had a lasting influence on the aesthetic choices of contemporary video game composers, and as a result — the modern landscape of video game music. Before we can properly identify how technological limitations have influenced the development of video game music, it is necessary to establish the context in which these limitations were faced.

The resulting creation, Twinkling Stars Above, is a single-player platform PC game prototype. This paper describes the shared and distinct context of two contemporary art movements important to the creation of Twinkling Stars Above: Japan‘s Superflat and North America‘s Lowbrow. I propose that, given Superflat‘s influence on Japan‘s video game graphics, Lowbrow style could also be applied to video games.

This was done so that I could contribute something more to the digital media industry regarding this topic, and show people unique data sets that may help guide them in the right direction if they are looking for answers to questions they may have about art styles and their impact on the success of games. This was done through a study that was conducted via an online survey, where results were taken from student participants over the age of 18 in the GAIM program at UCF.

17/05 - 2013 Blekinge Tekniska Högskola Sektionen för planering och mediedesign Kandidatarbete i Medieteknik 30 HP VT – 2013 MODERN PIXEL ART GAMES A study in GUI aesthetics for modern pixel art games Emma Grahn Handledare: Peter Giger Handledare: Mattias Schertell Examinator: Lena Trojer 1 1. Abstract English: The clarity and usability of the graphical user interface is very important for the enjoyment of a digital game. Pixel art is an art style with low resolution consisting of a precise placing of pixels, the smallest unit of colour that a screen can display. Pixel art has the potential of being cheap, easy to make and nostalgic, but it takes some skill to handle. However the great weakness of pixel art is displaying letters, and small details with clarity. So is there a place for pixel art in modern games? This thesis will discuss how pixel art games could use their GUI and HUDs to create beautiful games without losing clarity. The aim of this study is to is to compare different games GUI in a systematic way and discuss whether the artists have succeeded in their design of the GUI to give the player a pleasant game experience. A second aim is to find a series of recommendations on how to build a GUI with the least possible intrusion on on a narrative driven game. The main question is how can the GUI be designed and drawn to fit a modern pixel art game without causing a distracting discord to the pixel art style? Svenska: Tydlighet och användarvänlighet, i det grafiska användargränssnittet är en mycket viktig del för att göra ett digitalt spel omtyckt.
