Sunday, September 25, 2011 St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church 602 Park Avenue, Omaha, Nebraska Rev. Peter J. Pappas, Presbyter - Phone (402) 871-6241 Sunday, September 25, 2011 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost; Martyr Euphrosyne of Alexandria (+5th c.); Holy Martyr Paphnutios in Egypt (+3rd c.); Venerable Sergius of Radonezh (+1392); Arsenius the Elder of Georgia; Repose of the Apostle John (September 26) The Bread of the Offering (Prosphoro) was prepared by Niki Kuvetakis. Parish Council Ushers: George Barelos / Judy Stom / Elaine Poulos / Elaine Schall Community Ushers: Joe and Angelica Jensen Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom Hymns of the Entrance Resurrectional Hymn (Plagal of the Second Tone) When the angelic powers appeared at your tomb and those who guarded You became as though dead, standing by Your sepulchre was Mary seeking Your pure and sacred body. For You did vanquish Hades and, uncorrupted by its touch, You came unto the virgin woman, bestowing the gift of life. O You who rose from the dead, Lord, we give glory to You. Entrance Hymn (Second Tone): Come, let us bow down to Christ, as we worship Him, the Son of God. Save us, O Son of God, who are risen from the dead. We sing to You, “Alleluia!” Resurrectional Hymn (Plagal of the Second Tone) - Repeat Hymn of St. Euphrosyne (Plagal of the Fourth Tone) God’s image was perfectly preserved in you, O Mother, for, taking up the Cross you followed Christ. You taught us by example to disdain the flesh, which will pass away, but to care for the soul in seeking what is immortal. Wherefore, O holy Euphrosyne, your spirit rejoices with the angels. Hymn of St. John the Baptizer (Second Tone) A righteous man is remembered with praise, for you Forerunner the Lord’s witness is enough. You were shown to be greater in honor than the prophets, being privileged to baptize in the stream the One you had foretold. Therefore, rejoicing, you suffered for the sake of truth, and proclaimed the good news to those in Hades, that God had appeared in the flesh to take away the sin of the world, and grant our souls His great mercy. The daughter of a Byzantine Emperor – the wife of a GalicianVolhynian Prince «The daughter of a Byzantine Emperor – the wife of a GalicianVolhynian Prince» by Alexander V. Maiorov Source: Byzantinoslavica Revue internationale des Etudes Byzantines (Byzantinoslavica Revue internationale des Etudes Byzantines), issue: 12 / 2014, pages: 188233, on www.ceeol.com. The daughter of a Byzantine Emperor – the wife of a Galician-Volhynian Prince Alexander V. MAIOROV (Saint Petersburg) The Byzantine origin of Prince Roman’s second wife There is much literature on the subject of the second marriage of Roman Mstislavich owing to the disagreements between historians con- cerning the origin of the Princeís new wife. According to some she bore the name Anna or, according to others, that of Maria.1 The Russian chronicles give no clues in this respect. Indeed, a Galician chronicler takes pains to avoid calling the Princess by name, preferring to call her by her hus- band’s name – “âĺëčęŕ˙ ęí˙ăčí˙ Ðîěŕíîâŕ” (Roman’s Grand Princess).2 Although supported by the research of a number of recent investiga- tors, the hypothesis that she belonged to a Volhynian boyar family is not convincing. Their arguments generally conclude with the observation that by the early thirteenth century there were no more princes in Rusí to whom it would have been politically beneficial for Roman to be related.3 Even less convincing, in our opinion, is a recently expressed supposition that Romanís second wife was a woman of low birth and was not the princeís lawful wife at all.4 Alongside this, the theory of the Byzantine ori- gin of Romanís second wife has been significantly developed in the litera- ture on the subject.

Great Vespers ononon SaturdaySaturday,, September 242424,24 , 2012016666;; Tone 555 Our Righteous Mother Euphrosyne Venerable martyr Paphnoutios of Egypt and those slain with him; repose of Venerable Sergios of Radonezh; translation of the relics of Herman, archbishop of Kazan Priest: Blessed is our God, always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen. Come, let us worship and fall down before God our King. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King and our God. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God. THE PSALM OF INTRODUCTION—PSALM 103 Reader: Bless the Lord, O my soul; O Lord my God, Thou hast been magnified exceedingly. Confession and majesty hast Thou put on, Who coverest Thyself with light as with a garment, Who stretchest out the heaven as it were a curtain; Who supporteth His chambers in the waters, Who appointeth the clouds for His ascent, Who walketh upon the wings of the winds, Who maketh His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire. Who establisheth the earth in the sureness thereof; it shall not be turned back forever and ever. The abyss like a garment is His mantle; upon the mountains shall the waters stand. At Thy rebuke they will flee, at the voice of Thy thunder shall they be afraid. The mountains rise up and the plains sink down, unto the place where Thou hast established them. Thou appointedst a bound that they shall not pass, neither return to cover the earth. He sendeth forth springs in the valleys; between the mountains will the waters run.

  • St. Euphrosyne of Alexandria
St. Euphrosyne of Alexandria Commemorated on September 25 St. Euphrosyne of Alexandria was born at the beginning of the fifth century in the city of Alexandria. She was the only child in her family of illustrious and rich parents. Since her mother died early, she was raised by her father, Paphnutius, a deeply believing and pious Christian. He frequented a monastery, the leader of which was his spiritual guide. When Euphrosyne turned eighteen, her father wanted her to marry. He went to the monastery to his spiritual guide to receive his blessing for the planned wedding of his daughter. The monk spoke with Euphrosyne and gave her his blessing, but she yearned for the monastic life. She secretly accepted tonsure from a wandering monk, left her father’s house and decided to enter a monastery in order to lead her life in solitude and prayer. However, she feared that her father would find her in a women’s monastery. Calling herself Smaragdos, she went to the very same men’s monastery which she had visited with her father since childhood. The monks did not recognize Euphrosyne dressed in men’s garb, and so they accepted her into the monastery. In a solitary cell, St. Euphrosyne spent 38 years in works, fasting and prayer, and attained a high level of spiritual accomplishment. Her father grieved over the loss of his beloved daughter and more than once, on the advice of his spiritual guide, conversed with the monk Smaragdos, revealing his grief and receiving spiritual comfort. Before her death, Euphrosyne revealed her secret to her grieving father and asked that no one but he should prepare her body for burial.
