Scenes of Village Life, 1920-1970
Hook Norton Local History Group Scenes of Village Life, 1920-1970 The impact within the village of depression between the wars and of total war after 1939 have been well captured in the following series of short articles that have appeared in the Hook Norton Newsletter since 2017. Most of them have been written by James Tobin, himself a native of the village who grew up here during the latter part of the period. His bakery was in the area then called Downtown, at the bottom of Bell Hill, across from Woodbine Cottage where we lived in the late twenties and thirties. As an eight-year old I loved the smell of the bread and, if I was sent across to get some from the bakery, I always got into trouble with my mother for fingering a hole in the crust and pulling out some fresh bread. -
Plane Marvellous Weekend Ahead!
8 October 2019 Plane marvellous weekend ahead! Date: 19-20 October 2019 Time: 10.00am-4.00pm Cost: £13.50 per person (Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult) The Royal Air Force Museum Cosford will be opening the doors to thirteen aircraft during a two day Open Cockpits Weekend on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October. Aviation fans and families with budding young pilots can enjoy a closer look inside some of the unique and historic aircraft from the Museum’s collection, including one of the RAF’s iconic V-Bombers. Ticket holders will be given up to six hours to explore everything from British, German and Japanese Second World War fighter aircraft, to the pioneering research and development aircraft, many of which are sole examples. The popular Vickers Valiant B1, one third of Britain’s strategic nuclear strike force during the 50s and 60s, known as V Force, is guaranteed to be one of the weekend highlights. The Valiant was the first of Bomber Command’s V class aircraft and established Britain’s air-borne nuclear deterrent force before pioneering operational in-flight refuelling in the Royal Air Force. Not only was it the first V-Bomber to enter service, it was also the first to drop an operational British nuclear weapon over Christmas Island in 1957. The Valiant is displayed alongside the Handley Page Victor H2 and Avro Vulcan B2 in the Museum’s National Cold War Exhibition, the only place in the world where you can view all three aircraft together. Also in the event line-up is the Bristol 188, often a talking point for the Museum’s younger visitors, curious by its unusual design. -

We have seen the provisional end of year results which are now being audited and put in to the usual annual report. While an overall loss is indicated there have been a number of high expenditure items this year but that sets us up for the next 10+ years. I will make further comment when the full report is out. The club is still in a healthy position and keeps it’s good name out there as was evidenced by the complimentary comments from recent air show participants. -
Himalayan Expedition to Study Goitre

It is clear that all Latin American countries are well aware of many of the ways in which atomic energy can assist in development, and that its role in the region will expand rapidly. HIMALAYAN EXPEDITION TO STUDY GOITRE A New Zealand team carried radioisotopes and equipment when scaling the Himalayas on an expedition of mercy. Besides helping to build a hospital, they studied the serious results in the area resulting from the prevalence of goitre in an effort to bring relief to the mountain- dwelling Sherpas. In one village nearly every inhabitant was suffering from thyroid disorder. Leading the expedition was Sir Edmund Hillary, who not only gained world fame as the first conqueror of Everest but formed a lasting friendship with the Sherpas whose assistance was valuable in that feat. He had determined to return in order to help establish a hospital for them and in October last year was able to carry out the difficult project, thanks to generous voluntary contributions from the people of New Zealand. They had already helped him to set up some schools. With him on his return was a medical research group headed by Dr. H.K. Ibbertson, of Auckland Hospital, New Zealand. Under a research contract placed by the Agency at a cost of $15 500, supported by a grant of £3000 ($8400) from the Wellcome Trust of London, they flew from New Zealand and dien, with the help of sturdy native porters, man-handled their heavy equip- men up the steep slopes. -

This morning, at approximately 9:35am, we observed a helicopter from High Mountain Heli, approach our neighborhood from the forest property to the south-east. The pilot made an attempt to approach in accordance with the approved flight path, but did not achieve this. He flew along the ridge of the mountains and dropped in to our community prematurely, toward the heli-pad, at an angle that is not consistent with the approved flight plan. -

C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself.
