HOFFMAN Northwestern University As the French conquered Muslim lands in their nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century quest for empire, they encountered multiple and some- times mixed judicial systems among the native populations. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the over- throw of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Here, Julián Casanova, one of Spain’s leading historians, offers a magisterial new account of this crit- ical period in Spanish history. He exposes the ways in which the Republic brought into the open simmering tensions between Catholics and hard- line anticlericalists, bosses and workers, Church and State, order and revolution. Spiritism, Violence, and Social Struggle in Late Nineteenth-Century Catalonia Gerard Horta University of Barcelona ABSTRACT This article discusses different situations concerning the position- ing of the nineteenth-century Catalan spiritism towards violence: on the one hand, with regard to capitalist's society's implementa- tion of the industrial process; on the other, in relation to the politi- cal use of violence – ‘terror tactics’ – employed by certain anar- chist sectors in Catalonia at the close of the century. As we shall see, an understanding of said positioning reveals the spiritist move- ment's ambiguity in this sphere. To interpret this ambiguity, one must take into account the tremendous crossroads at which its fol- lowers found themselves, midway between one society being destruc- tured and another that, in statu nascendi, was being prestructured. INTRODUCTION Catalan spiritism is first mentioned in the correspondence that José Maria Fernández Colavida established in 1858 with Léon Denizard Rivail also known as Allan Kardec (1804–1869), the Lyon-born French educator who systemized European spiritist theory and practice in 1857. Spiritism was firmly ingrained in Catalonia from the 1860s to 1939 at the end of the Spanish Civil War, the outcome of which triggered brutal repression against the movement's asso- ciations and followers. Throughout that period, broad subordinate sectors – in general, workers and artisans – devised a world's view, the organization of social relations and the development of people that embraced all spheres of existence. Liv Bonner Bradley Collins Art & Psychoanalysis November 2018 Picasso’s Guernica: Present Tragedy & Enlightened Past The catastrophic bombing that occurred on April 26, 1937 in the Basque town of Guernica may be seen as not only a major event of the Spanish Civil War, but accredited with retrieving Pablo Picasso from his creative paralysis. Despite Picasso’s invitation by the Spanish Government and agreement to produce a mural for the Spanish pavilion at the Paris International Exposition, he remained uninspired up until the news of the bombing.1 Following the tragedy, Picasso’s intention for the commission was driven by not only a newfound interest for political propaganda, but by his subconscious identification with the event. While the concept that would become the masterpiece of Guernica was in response to the events of that influential April day, Picasso’s true inspiration lied in his childhood trauma of enduring an earthquake that mirrored that of the bombing of Guernica. With the reference of Picasso: Art as Autobiography by Mary Mathews Gedo, the personal and symbolic influences of the artist’s memory are revealed in the pictorial narrative of Picasso’s Guernica. The efficacy of the painting is not merely due to the intrinsic political commentary, “the protest…found in what has happened to the bodies…the imaginative equivalent of what happened to them in the flesh,”2 but rather more so found in the emotional impact of Picasso’s subconscious influence. 1 UC REAL-2016 SUMMER PROGRAMS SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE Program Director: Prof. Dr. Jesus Angel Solórzano, Dean, UC Faculty of Arts and Humanities Program Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Marta Pascual, Director of the UC Language Center (CIUC) This Program is intended to offer all REAL students full immersion into the Spanish way of life, and combines the learning of Spanish Language with sessions on Spanish History, Arts, and Gastronomy. The program is scheduled so that it can be taken in combination with any of the other three. It includes Spanish Grammar and Conversation classes in the afternoons, as well as Friday morning sessions on Spanish Art and History, including guided excursions to relevant historical sites of Cantabria, and practical Spanish Gastronomy sessions on Wednesday nights. All classes will be taught in Spanish and groups will be made according to the results of a language placement test. Spanish Culture sessions, taught in an easy to follow Spanish, will be common to all students and beginners will be assisted by their instructors. Academic load: 52 contact hours (32 hours of Spanish Language, plus 20 hours of Spanish Culture sessions) Subjects included: • Spanish Language for foreigners: Monday through Thursday, 3-5 pm • Spanish Art and History Sessions: Fridays (3, 10 and 17 June), from 9 am to 1 pm • Spanish Gastronomy.
