Integers can be found in real world situations, such as…

Temperature: In both the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, temperatures sometimes fall below 0 degrees. When that happens, the temperature is written as a .

Example: The temperature at 6pm was 5°C. The temperature dropped 10° in one hour. At 7pm, the temperature was -5°C.

Accounting: If the balance of a financial account falls below 0 dollars, it is listed as a negative number. That means there is a deficit (or debt) in the account.

Example: Martin had $45 in his bank account. He spent $20 on Tuesday, $5 on Wednesday, and $30 on Thursday. His bank account balance is -$10.

Elevation: Sea level is considered to be 0 elevation. Any elevation above that is a positive number. Any elevation below that may be listed as a negative number.

Example: Mt. McKinley, the highest elevation in North America, is 20,320 feet above sea level. Death Valley is 20,602 feet lower than Mt. McKinley. Death Valley is the lowest elevation in North America at -282 feet.
