Through the process of translating Ezekiel 37:1-14, I came to appreciate the text. Specifically I liked the intimate nature of the language. When I brought this to Dr. Anderson’s attention, he thought that there might be a comparison there with John 3. Though it was not expected, the second Hebrew course The Hebrew Exegesis of Qoheleth with Dr. Anderson and my colleague Camoy Williams, also contributed to the ideas and its full semantic range became clear in that course. Thus, though this is not necessarily the thesis I thought I was going to end up writing, I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Anderson, and Camoy for the dialogue they provided during these Hebrew courses and in MA supervisions. 6 INTRODUCTION is used in Ezekiel 37:1-14 and the Greek word רוח This thesis examines how the Hebrew word πνευμα is used in John 3:1-21. Greek and Hebrew are two very different languages. Yet they often are paired together, since they are the two main languages used in the Christian Bible. They certainly have their differences, some are superficial like different letters and vowels, different grammatical rules, and even the direction in which they are written and read. However, some are more fundamental differences, for example Hebrew is known for its relatively few rules and many exceptions; whereas Greek is quite the opposite. However, despite all of these differences, the two languages do share some similarities. Coincidently, one of these similarities is the concept of “breath, wind, or spirit,” a rather wide semantic range for a singular word. Breath, wind or spirit is conveyed in the Hebrew word and Greek word πνευμα. These two words will be the main focus of the first chapter of this רוח thesis. This thesis will also explore possible allusion, pun, and typology in these two texts. I will in Ezekiel 37 with the use of πνευμα in John 3. I will see if there are any רוח compare the use of demonstrable uses of allusion, pun and typology between these two texts. I will be looking to see if there are any thematic, symbolic, situational, or literary parallels, or commonalities between these two literary units. The main focus of this examination will begin with a linguistic analysis of the concept of “breath, wind and spirit,” and the different activities of each. in Ezekiel 37: 1-14. This will be followed by a word study on רוח Chapter 1 will examine Then I will examine the Greek text of Ezekiel 37 in the Septuagint. I will also provide a .רוח translation and perform a word study on πνευμα there too. The complete texts in the original 7 languages, as well as their translations, can be found in the appendices. I will, however, only deal .is explicitly found רוח with the texts where Chapter 2 will discuss allusion, pun and typology as hermeneutics with a theological application. I will discuss a few examples of how these have been used within the Bible itself, and by biblical scholars. Finally I will outline how I intend to use these methods in this thesis. In chapters 3 and 4, I will do an exegesis of both Ezekiel 37:1-14 and John 3:1-21, respectively, within their context. I unpack each pericope with respect to its literary and historical contexts. This will provide a fuller picture or what the passages were saying when they were written, what they say within the literary unit of the Bible as a whole, and what they may say to us today. In chapter 5 I will look more closely at the concepts of restoration and resurrection. I will discuss the problematics of death and afterlife in the Old Testament. I will then discuss the concepts of restoration and resurrection in Ezekiel 37 and John 3. I will also look at how these ideas have been addressed in other parts of the Bible, and any significance that they may carry. Finally, in chapter 6, I will discuss the ideas that I have found connected to the concept of ‘breath, wind, and spirit.’ I will also outline any typological connections I may have found between these two pericopies. I will discuss what it could mean and any implications these comparisons might have theologically. Most importantly I will try to answer the question: Was Jesus alluding or using Ezekiel 37:1-14 as background to His discussion with Nicodemus in John 3:1-21? Furthermore this thesis will seek to answer the questions: Can any comparisons be found through a typological reading of Ezekiel 37 and John 3? Are any allusions present in John 3 that would point to Ezekiel 37? If so, what are they, and what are their implications? I hope 8 that answering these questions will lead to a greater understanding of these two passages and the theology found within them. 9 CHAPTER ONE TEXT, TRANSLATIONS AND LINGUISTICS In this chapter I will examine the Hebrew and Greek for “wind, breath or spirit” in Ezekiel 37 and John 3. By doing a word study on the two most significant nouns, I can examine any possible relation to one another and their possible purpose within these passages. I will look at what these words mean, and why they might have been chosen based on the context of the passages, and within the whole of the Bible. Finally, I will provide my translation of both texts and provide an argument explaining why I translated them the way I did. I will only deal with and πνευμα in John 3. The full Hebrew text and translation of רוח verses in Ezekiel 37 which use Ezekiel 37:1-14 can be found in appendices 1 and 2. Barton Payne [p.50] The four chapters of Isaiah 36-39 that appear also in II Kings 18-20 and that contain historical dialog between the prophet and his king, Hezekiah, have produced more critical debate than any other section of I and II Kings.1 They furnish also some of our primary evidence for the unity of the Book of Isaiah,2 forming, as Delitzsch has put it, a “bridge” to the prophecies that follow.3 A thorough treatment of this evidence hence becomes impossible under present limitations. The writer would seek, however, to indicate three specific areas within this larger discussion in which sharpened awareness may contribute to a defense of the total authority of Scripture. L. CONDITIONING FACTORS IN EVANGELICALISM’S APPROACH TO ISAIAH 36-39 If we take, for example, such a question as the relation of Isaiah 36-39 to II Kings 18-20, it appears at the outset that liberal and conservative writers reach opposite conclusions because of their respective methodologies. The liberal, e.g. S.R. Driver, limits his admissable evidence to inductive comparisons of literary detail and of thematic concepts; he thus decides in favor of the priority of Kings.4 The conservative, e.g. Franz Delitzsch, while utilizing historical prose style as a confirmatory factor, concentrates on two reasons that arise (1) out of an analogy with other sections of Kings and Isaiah and (2) out of the authority of Chronicles, deductively applied to the chapters in question; he thus insists upon the originality of Isaiah.5 Bible believing scholars appear to be conditioned by five distinctive principles.

This means that I can’t see very far in front of me. If I take off my glasses I can only see a couple of feet in front of me. The entire front row becomes blurry to me. But when I put on my glasses, my vision changes. I can distinguish faces and I can see where I’m headed. When we follow Christ it’s like we put on a pair of glasses. Before, we walked around with no direction and no vision for life. Dead in our trespasses and sin. But Christ gives us the opportunity to look at life in a whole new way. Yet, if we don’t learn to see things the way God sees them, we’re going to miss the reality of what God wants to do in our lives. The prophet, Ezekiel lived during a tumultuous time in Israel’s history. The nation had become a shell of its former self. The country had splintered and became two nations. The Assyrians dispersed Israel hundreds of years earlier. 1 Now in our text, Judah had become just as idolatrous as Israel and was heading for destruction. The Russian Empire had infiltrated Judah...sorry. I mean…the Babylonian empire reigned supreme over that entire region of the world. They overtook the land of Judah and carried away many of its inhabitants.

    The Book of Isaiah Introduction: Isaiah is called "The Book of Salvation." The name Isaiah means "Yahweh is salvation" or “Yahweh is the source of salvation.” Isaiah, who is called the Prince of Prophets, shines above all the other writers and prophets of Scripture. His mastery of the language, his rich and vast vocabulary, and his poetic skill have earned him the title, "Shakespeare of the Bible." He was educated, distinguished, and privileged, yet remained a deeply spiritual man. He was committed to obedience over the long haul of his 55-60 year ministry as a prophet of God. He was a true patriot who loved his country and his people. Strong tradition suggests that he died a martyr’s death under the reign of King Manasseh by being placed within the hollow of a tree trunk and sawed in two. He was a contemporary of Amos, Hosea and Micah. As might be expected, salvation is the overarching theme in the book of Isaiah. Other themes include judgment, holiness, punishment, captivity, the fall of the nation, comfort, hope and salvation through the coming Messiah. The first 39 books of Isaiah contain very strong messages of judgment against Judah and a call to repentance and holiness. The people exhibited an outward form of godliness, but their hearts had become corrupted. God warned them through Isaiah, to come clean and purify themselves, but they ignored his message. Isaiah predicted the demise and captivity of Judah, yet comforted them with this hope: God has promised to provide a Redeemer. The last 27 chapters contain God's message of forgiveness, consolation and hope, as God speaks through Isaiah, revealing his plan of blessing and salvation through the coming Messiah.

    Isaiah 37:14-20, 38:1-8, 39:1-8 Over the next few weeks, we will be celebrating the conclusion of our All-In journey at The Summit Church. The sermon this weekend takes a closer look at how Hezekiah’s story finishes. At one time, Hezekiah was a hero, a faithful man, and an intercessor for his people. The invasion of the Assyrians tested his faith in God and Hezekiah responded with confident trust in God. As we will see this week, other circumstances in Hezekiah’s life showed that he was not firm in his faith to the end of his story. From Isaiah chapters 37-39, we will learn from Hezekiah’s journey of faith through his prayer life. These chapters provide more details about Hezekiah than what we learn from 2 Chronicles 32. The progression of his prayers will reveal what was most important to Hezekiah in the later years of his life. On the whole, Hezekiah was one of the greatest and most spiritually faithful kings in Israelite history. The point of this study is not to smear his name or sit in judgment on his character. Rather, the biblical authors, by telling this part of Hezekiah’s story, were showing that even Hezekiah could not remain faithful to the end. The end of his reign led to the most grievous time of Exile in Israel’s long history. Israel was still waiting for it’s true king to lead the people in faith, peace, and righteousness. Jackson 2018 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores the topic of eschatological violence in the Pentecostal tradition through an intertextual literary analysis of Ezekiel 36:16—39:29 and Revelation 19:11—21 and 20:7—10 by investigating primarily how the intentional literary placement of the ‘Two Sticks’ oracle (Ezek 37:15—28) between the ‘Dry Bones’ vision (Ezek 37:1—14) and the ‘Gog of Magog’ war (Ezek 38:1—39:29) informs the reader’s theological understanding of the message of Ezekiel 36:16—39:29 as a whole. Secondarily, this thesis considers how the allusion to Ezek 38—39 in Rev 19:11—21 and 20:7—10 enhances the reader’s theological understanding of Ezek 36:16—39:29, yielding an intertextual reading that challenges the way these texts have long been understood in popular Pentecostal contexts.

Osborne Summary This article discusses the royal associations of tree imagery in the ancient Near East before examining four early messianic interpretations of the tree symbolism in Ezekiel 17:22-24, namely those of 4QEzekiela, the Septuagint, Targum Ezekiel, and The Shepherd of Hermas. 1. Not that the question had actually been settled before, as can be observed from the various Church councils throughout the last two thousand years with their decisions, and the fact that different Christian denominations often have very different books included in their Biblical Canons. Even Churches who are in communion with each other disagree over the question of which books belong in the Holy Bible. The exiled people of Judah were eager to blame God for their circumstances. “It’s not fair!” they argued. (See Ezekiel 18:25.) Ezekiel told the people that they were at fault for their exile; their faithlessness had provoked God’s wrath. The people were getting what they deserved. “I take no pleasure in anyone’s death,” God said. “So repent and live!” (Ezekiel 18:32). God gave Ezekiel a vision. In this vision, God showed Ezekiel a valley of dry bones. The bones represented Israel. Ezekiel prophesied that God would put tendons, flesh, and skin on the bones. He would put breath in them so they would come to life. Ezekiel encouraged the exiles. Apart from God, they were dead. But God was offering them life. He would restore their future. “My dwelling place will be with them,” God said. “I will be their God, and they will be My people” (Ezekiel 37:27). We too are dead in our sin. (Ephesians 2:1) Sin separates us from God because He is holy. We are apart from God’s presence. But God does not delight in our death. He is patient and wants us to repent and live! Hundreds of years after Ezekiel died, God’s presence came to His people through Jesus Christ, Immanuel—meaning, “God with us.” Jesus is the source of life; He offers us living water.
