NHL All-Star Weekend 2012: a Star Is Born NHL All-Star Weekend 2012: A star is born Kane, Price and Alfredsson big winners of All-Star Weekend; Ovechkin not so much The NHL All-Star weekend is about great hockey, good times and – of course – the fans. But it’s also about something else: The personal brands of players, who each hold some responsibility of marketing themselves and the game they play. So who were the winners and losers of this year’s festivities? • MediaMiser used its sentiment analysis capabilities to track players who received a relatively large number of positive or negative mentions. • Though Alexander Ovechkin had a high number of mentions (see page 2), far more were negative thanks to his skipping of the All-Star Weekend. This gave the Washington Capitals star the only negative overall rating. • Hometown hero Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara received a relatively high level of positive tweets, but also a great deal of neutral. This decreased their overall sentiment average. • The two highest-rated players by brand, Patrick Kane and Carey Price, earned high praise from fans for lighthearted moments during the NHL Skills Competition (Price was mic’d for CBC and Kane wore a Superman cape during the event). These two did not garner extremely high numbers of mentions, however, as shown on page 2. © 2012 MediaMiser Ltd. 1 • Of all tweets collected with the #NHLAllStar and #NHLSkills hashtags, team captains Zdeno Chara and Daniel Alfredsson led all players in Twitter mentions. Of note is the low number of Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin mentions (neither of whom attended the festivities) in All- Star tagged tweets. • Of all tweets collected for the study, Alexander Ovechkin and Daniel Alfredsson had the most mentions. Sidney Crosby (thanks to injury-related news that broke during the weekend) also had a high number, as did Zdeno Chara. All tweets were harvested between Jan. 25 and 31. • Peak Performance and Contract Inefficiency in the National Hockey League
PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business The Colorado College In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Scott Winkler April 2013 PEAK PERFORMANCE AND CONTRACT INEFFICIENCY IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE Scott Winkler April 2013 Economics Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine what age National Hockey League (NHL) players have their best seasons and how this relates to their contract earnings. The hypothesis is that NHL players have their peak performance at age 27, which indicates that long-term contracts that exceed this age create inefficiency. The study will examine player productivity by taking 30 NHL players and evaluating their performance in the years leading up to age 27 as well as years that follow. Performance measures include average point production and the highest average ice-time per game. The study will also use two OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regressions where the dependent variables are average time on ice per game and capital hit, both good indicators of how valuable a player is to his team, as well as several statistical independent variables such as points, games played and most importantly age. By gaining knowledge of peak performance, NHL organizations could better manage their teams by limiting long-term contracts to players and as a result lessen the inefficiency that exists in the market. Department of Economics Department of Business Institute for Labour Law and and the Murphy Institute Nevada State College Industrial Relations in the Tulane University European Union IZA GLO [email protected] Rossi, G. University of Birkbeck London Working Paper 2107 May 2021 Abstract We investigate whether employees vary their performance during fixed-term contracts. We follow National Hockey League players’ performance over ten seasons. We use a two-stage least square fixed effect model to address empirical limitations in previous studies. We find that players’ performance varies at the end of the contract depending on ability, tenure, and (geographical) willingness to move. In particular, long-tenure and low-ability short-tenure workers vary their performance, depending on their continent of origin; these results might be due to different willingness to move, at different stages of players’ career. Why is fighting vanishing from the NHL? By Chris Kuc, Chicago Tribune on 02.18.16 Word Count 1,166 The Philadelphia Flyers' Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (left) is charged with goalie interference on the Toronto Maple Leafs' James Reimer (right) during the second period of a game at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jan. 19, 2016. Photo: Steven M. Falk/Philadelphia Inquirer/TNS Before he became the darling of hockey with his heartwarming tale surrounding last weekend’s NHL All-Star Game, John Scott was a polarizing figure in the league. As the last of the game’s true enforcers, teammates revered Scott for protecting them on the ice, while many fans who believe fighting should be eradicated from the game reviled him. But here’s the thing about fighting and Scott: In recent seasons he had difficulty finding anyone willing to drop the gloves with him. During his stint with the Chicago Blackhawks from 2010-12, Scott often would bemoan the fact opponents would turn down his pugilistic requests. “It has gotten even harder these days,” Scott, now with the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, said last week. “It’s hard to find fights.” That follows a trend in the NHL, where fighting is down 16 percent from a year ago at this time, 35 percent from two seasons ago and 40 percent from the 2012-13 season. According to the NHL, through Feb. 4 there were a total of 212 fights in a combined 767 games for an average of 0.28 per contest. Through 767 games of the ’14-15 season, there were 259 fights (0.34 per game).
