“BATTLEFIELD OF NEW ULM” | by Michael Eischen. Photo Courtesy of the Brown County Historical Society

New Ulm was founded by two groups of German immigrants beginning in 1854, both looking to create a “utopi- an German community on the American wilderness.” Using the advice of a French fur trader, they sited their town on the natural terraces that occurred near the confluence of the Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers in south-cen- tral Minnesota. It is named after Ulm, a city on the Danube River in south-central Germany, and home to the tallest church steeple in the world and the birthplace of Albert Einstein.

New Ulm’s Way of the Cross was completed in 1904 and renovated in 2004. Its 14 sta- tions, with statues imported from Bavaria, provide a quiet, reflective walk up a gentle incline to a chapel dedicated to the Mother of Sorrows. Entrusted to the Diocese of New Ulm, the Way of the Cross is located on the 5th North hill, behind the New Ulm Medical Center, and includes a nearby memorial to Father Alexander Berghold, an instrumental priest in the 1800s who, along with Sister Flavia of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, initiated the project.

Way of the Cross 1500 5th North, behind the Medical Center | Daily from April to October

Dedicated in April 2010, the Chapel of the Christ was built to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Its soaring beams, fine artistry, and musical emphasis make it a wonderful addition to the college’s mission – preparing workers for carrying the gospel of Christ to the world. The 57 rank Schantz organ is the perfect instrument for the chapel’s superior acoustics.

The present Cathedral is the third church on this location, with the other two lost to the Dakota War in 1862 and a tornado in 1881. Begun in 1890 and not finished until 1903, it is a fine example of German Baroque architecture. People of all faiths are wel- come to visit the glorious interior, originally created by local artists Alexander Schwendinger, Christ Heller and Anton Gag. The scene in the church’s apse with God the Father presiding over Heaven and Earth is stunning, as is the intricate main altar.

2016 | NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE 25 BE YOUR OWN TOUR GUIDE WITH THESE ITINERARIES Celebrate Your

German Heritage Photo By | CAROLYN MARTI-SMITH Veigel’s Kaiserhoff is “The German restaurant” in town and, in addition to their German menu items (which has many American favorites, too!), they have many scenes of Germany and New Ulm painted on the walls. The Guten Tag Haus has many items imported from Germany, including lots of Christmas ornaments and décor, cuckoo clocks, steins and candy. Domeier’s German Store is a crowd-pleaser that has been in business since the 1930s and is chock full of imported goods from Germany, including food stuffs and music. The Heritage Tree Installed for our 150th Anniversary of the founding of town in 2004, this is very much like the “Mai baums” seen in many German cities. See it at the south end of our downtown. Bavarian Blast is the inheritor to a German-music themed summer festival since 1953. They have innovated as time has moved on, but all of the elements you would expect of a German-style festival are here! Hermann Monument is a 102’ tall monument to a German hero who united the German tribes in 9 A.D. and is a hero to the German nation. The views of the Minnesota River valley from the top are stunning! Painted in 1873 the Turner Hall Murals were painted in the ratskeller (basement) of this old building and contain scenes of Germany, Switzerland and Italy and are incredible! To know they were covered up for 81 years after World War I and restored makes the story even more remarkable. Enjoy a Schells’ beer in “the most Germanic room in America!” Glockenspiel is a 45-foot tall bell tower with mechanical figures that come out at 12/3/5pm every day. It is locat- ed at the north end of downtown and has served as a landmark since it was built in 1980. We have our version of Oktoberfest, the universal festival the first two weekends in October with venues at the Best Western Plus, Downtown, and Schell’s Brewery. Come “get your German on!” Girl’s Day Out Celebrate a special birthday or other event with your girlfriends in New Ulm with “uniquely female” shops, restaurants and opportunities. From spa services to decorat- ing workshops – let us help you make mem- ories and give you stories to tell! Here are some of our events that may interest you! Shopping Opener is a long-lived event is comprised of several different components that include a Women’s Expo, local crafter sales under the title of “Gnome-made Shows,” art shows, decorating workshops, and more. Shopping Opener is scheduled for two weekends in early November. T h r e e quilt shops help you take advantage of this growing hobby. They offer supplies, classes, work space, the use of specialized tools, and host a few quilting events during the year. To celebrate our unique shops and historic shopping district, a Boutique Week is being organized for April 14-16, 2016. Fashion show, food and other activities! Watch www.newulm.com for more infor- mation. The Parade of Lights is an annual event that has gone on for 27 years (as of 2015) and features over 60 lighted units that go through downtown the Friday after Thanksgiving. Use it to cap off a day of holiday shop- ping! Bring your girlfriends and “take over” one of our two charming bed and breakfasts! Both overlook the Minnesota River valley and are convenient to downtown’s shopping, dining and nightlife options. Other accom- modation options are available. Call us at the Visitor Center (888-463-9856) for planning assistance and referrals.

26 NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE | 2016 Pub Crawl - New Ulm Style Beer has long been a part of German cul- ture. In fact, today Germany is globally ranked third in terms of per-capita beer consumption. So take a tour around New Ulm and taste the culture! We care about your safety, so please drink responsibly! Start the morning with Bloody Marys at the fabulous B&L Bar! Ask for a chaser: the B&L has more Schell’s beer on tap that anywhere else in the world! Next enjoy the scenic drive out to Morgan Creek Vineyards to sample wines from Minnesota’s only under- ground winery! Order a wine flight and choose your samples from their many delicious varieties! Wine not your thing? They serve Schell’s beer too. Stop for lunch and a pint at Turner Hall, the oldest bar in Minnesota! Head to the historic Ratskeller Bar and check out the murals on the walls which date back to the 1870s! You can sit right next to them as you enjoy some delicious German or American food, and a drink from this historic bar. After lunch, head to one of the most popular tourist attractions in New Ulm: Schell’s Brewery! The tour here is not to be missed! The grounds are beautiful year-round, with a deer park and peacocks who wander the gardens. Schell’s has been brewing German craft beer since 1860 and the tasting after the tour is well worth the $3 price of admission! After the brewery, you may decide to take a break (and a nap!) before continuing your adventure. That’s ok! When you’re refreshed, get ready for a fun evening at the Grand Kabaret. Enjoy drinks and something from the wood fire oven in the adjacent restaurant. The exposed brick walls of this historic building make excellent acoustics for the live music every Friday and Saturday. Not ready to call it a night? Keep the fun going! There are many watering holes within walking distance of the Grand Kabaret, and others all over town! Check out page 46 for more nightlife ideas.

Social Media Fans New Ulm’s German heritage is our biggest draw, but these events and activities will give you great photos and posts on Social Media! From the hip to the frozen, gnomes to bluegrass, we host great music, tasty food and lots of fun every year! Grand Kabaret is a restored hotel from the mid-1800s features free music every Friday and Saturday. Musical styles are in the range of folk, blues, light rock, jazz and other. You can access the attached restaurant, too! In addi- tion to great wine, Morgan Creek Vineyards, has developed a fun tourism following for their “Wine Down for the Weekend” events Friday nights and twice-monthly jazz nights. An outdoor oven Photo By | DON BORSTAD makes great pizzas! The brewery has a great win- ter festival! Bock Fest is filled with over 5,000 fun-loving young people enjoying music, food and, of course, Schell’s beer! When it closes at 4:30pm come to the German Mardi Gras fun at the New Ulm Conference Center, called Fasching. Join the “Parade of Costumes” if you dare! Who can argue with over 150 years of brewing success? Come out to Schell’s Brewery and enjoy the beautiful gardens, squawk at a roaming peacock, visit the wonderful gift shop, and tour the “prettiest brewery in America!” With a professional director, State Street Theater is a home- grown group that has ramped-up their offerings with many shows during the year. They specialize in “murder mysteries,” but tackle many styles of theater. New Ulm’s long-lived motorcycle club, The Flying Dutchmen, hosts several cycle events at their lovely club house and grounds throughout the summer that are open to the public. Flat-track races and hill climbs are their specialties, but they host rock bands on occasion, too. It’s great fun for everyone! MORE ITINERARY IDEAS AT WWW.NEWULM.COM!

2016 | NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE 29 To Lower Sioux Agency & Jackpot Junction Casino Come Play in New Ulm!

Nestled along two rivers, blanketed with trees and offering acres and acres of parks, New Ulm is the perfect place to get outside and get busy! Soak up the sun along our trails, hit the links (disc, miniature or traditional), or drop a line in the river. Just get out there! You’ll thank us come bratwurst and sauerkraut time. From New Ulm's earliest beginnings the com- munity has had a vested interest in park space. The original plat for the City included several key parks that still exist. Today New Ulm is able to boast a total of 42 park units. Visit www.ci.new- ulm.mn.us to see a list of park facilities and the amenities available at each location. Park shel- ters can be reserved: 507-359-8344 Park & Recreation Director Tom Schmitz cred- its this rich system to the original founders say- ing, "[It's] the result of New Ulm's history of recreation and outdoor activities. This goes back to German Land Society and Turner ethic of 'sound mind and sound body.' They saw the value of recreation, green spaces, and natural resources." Open to visitors, the city’s Recreation Center (122 S Garden St) has an indoor swimming pool with slides, whirlpool and an aquatic climbing wall; a three-lane indoor track; indoor courts that can be used for tennis, basketball or volleyball; racquetball and walleyball courts; strength and cardio facilities and group fitness area and cycling classes. The Civic Center (1212 North Franklin) houses two arenas, including one with year-round ice. The building also has eight team rooms and meeting space available for rent. Note: Outdoor ice skating (hockey and open-skate) also available at Harman Park (101 N Garden St). Warming house and restrooms on site.

In the mid-1800s, the banks of the river near Riverside Park (101 S Front St) welcomed steam- boats carrying soliders, supplies and German set- tlers. Today it is home to the Riverside History & Nature Learning Center (see page 15). The kids will love the “pirate ship” playground, and Gertie The Goose. Gertie, named for the old New Ulm neigh- borhood of “Goosetown” where Riverside Park is located, is one of many characters a local writer has created in a folk tale that also includes the four German gnomes and other characters you will see at our festivals.

32 NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE | 2016 You must visit German Park (200 North German) in downtown New Ulm. It is full of monuments, flowers and the Angel Fountain. It’s great for a lunch break or a place to stroll amidst the beauty. Free music concerts: various groups every Monday night in the summer (June 6 – August 29, 2016, no music July 4), and Municipal Band con- certs every Wednesday night in June and July. The Municipal Band has been in existence for over 65 years. When the 205th Infantry Band was called up for duty in WWII, a “Pioneer Band,” the precursor to the Municipal Band was formed. Bring a blanket or folding chair and enjoy the music!

While at German Park, the kids can play on the playground equipment or climb on the Herbie The Hedgehog statue. This charming 4-foot bronze sculpture was cre- ated by local artist Jason Jaspersen. He makes young heads turn with his whimsical expression; feel free to capture their bemuse- ment with your camera! He is New Ulm’s own city Park Ranger and his full time job is to keep the parks clean and to inspire oth- ers to do the same.

In line with New Ulm’s commitment to active lifestyles, there is a 13-mile paved Bike Loop (see pages 30-31) around the city. This bike loop didn’t happen overnight! The pro- ject began with a paved recreational trail that runs more than five miles along an old railroad bed, making it the perfect path for an easy family ride or run. The trail travels from Broadway and 24th North St to German and 20th South St. Along the way, take in the river, a few city parks and even some farm land. The trail is clearly marked and largely shaded, with benches along the way in case you need a rest. In 2015, the 13-mile bike loop was completed – just follow the signs with Hermann The German on a bike in the corner. There are also designated safe biking paths throughout the city. Visit www.newulm.com or stop by the Visitor Center for maps (1 N Minnesota St, 507-233- 4300). And if you are interested in a different type of biking, New Ulm has a Skate Park and BMX Track (315 1st South St). Both parks are free and open to the public, with BMX Park use limited May through September. The skate park may be used by inline skaters or skateboarders.

2016 | NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE 33 Come see what FUN is brewing

New Ulm is fortunate to have a state park in our city limits, Flandrau State Park. Flandrau, one of Minnesota’s 10 most popular state parks, is comprised of 1,000 acres, including grasslands, marshes, and wooded areas along the Big Cottonwood River. Located in southwest New Ulm, the park is just minutes from downtown. Among the amenities are eight miles of hiking and groomed cross-country trails (boot and ski rentals available), a chlorinated sand-bot- tomed pool, beach, sand volleyball court, playground equip- ment and fire and horseshoe pits. The park has 88 campsites in three campgrounds, 2 year-round cabins, and a group center that accommodates 110 people. In addition to its nat- ural beauty, the park also holds a significant place in New Ulm’s history. In the 1930s and 1940s it was the site of Works Progress Administration (WPA) projects, and several of the stone buildings those crews erected still stand. During World War II, part of the park was used as a prisoner of war camp. It is named after Charles E. Flandrau, who played a pivotal role in the Dakota War and served on the Minnesota Supreme Court. Flandrau State Park 1300 Summit Ave | 507-233-9800 | 866-85PARKS | open year-round. 8am-10pm for day use; camping available year- round | www.mndnr.gov|reservations | Admission: State Park vehicle entry fee is $25/year or $5/1-day pass.

Bird watchers will love the many opportunities for bird- ing in and around New Ulm! Flandrau has recorded up to 158 different specie sightings. Fifteen miles east is Swan Lake, which is a wildlife preserve with many varieties of birds for viewing. Getting on or along the river will also provide you chances to spot unusual birds, including eagles. Visitors to New Ulm are encouraged to join in the Christmas fun by participating in the Annual Christmas Bird Count held in the middle of Deccember. Results are given to the Audubon Society (www.Audubon.org) for recording. To sign up or for more information, contact Elaine Poulson at 507-354-5662 or [email protected].

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Regional Office, just south of New Ulm, is the place to obtain information on outdoor recreation oppor- tunities and natural resources, such as hiking, biking, native prairies, fishing, hunting, wildlife watching, snowmobiling, camping, canoeing and river maps. A distinctive feature of the course is the many mature oak trees that border the fairways. The Country Club was established in 1929 as a nine- hole course and expanded to 18 holes in 1966. The front nine saw a remodeling effort in 2001 with the addition of hazards, tee boxes and sand-traps to add an overall depth to the course. The newly remodeled clubhouse is complete with bar and restaurant service in the Cottonwood Grill. The grill offers a casual dining for both golfers and non golfers. The banquet facility hosts all size and type of functions with a seating capacity of 380. There are also several private meeting spaces for smaller groups. 2016 | NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE 43 Dining Scene If it’s authentic German cuisine you're after, New Ulm might seem a little bit like paradise. Sure, we've got some of Minnesota's best bratwurst and sauerkraut, sauerbraten and spaetzle, and a brew- ery full of German beer to wash it down; but New Ulm's dining scene doesn't start and end there. You'll also find Mexican, Chinese, and everything in between, in family-style eateries, fast food and casual settings, as well as more upscale dining and a nearby winery.

Martin Luther College (MLC), at 1995 Luther Court, overlooks New Ulm directly across from Hermann Heights. Its landmark structure, Old Main, was built in 1884. We invite you to come and visit our cam- pus and enjoy the many activities connected with colle- giate life. Take in one of the many annual dramatic pro- ductions. If you love music, we offer numerous vocal and instrumental concerts throughout the year that highlight the work of four choirs, as well as our Wind Symphony, and handbell choir. We run a Division 3 NCAA athletic program, so there are always sporting events to attend. Whether it be at our scenic football bowl, soccer complex, softball field, or gymnasium you are welcome to join the action. The MLC campus hosts many community organizations throughout the year. New Ulm’s Tennis Association, Soccer Association, Community Concert, Rotary, and American Legion are several groups who regularly make use of the college’s courts, buildings, and athletic fields. We at MLC are proud to be a part of the New Ulm community. We look forward to welcoming you to our campus.
