FAIRFIELD, Conn. – For the first time in school history, the women’s soccer team (12-6-1) will play in the NCAA Tournament after claiming the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship title with a 2-1 victory over (9-8-2) Sunday afternoon at ’s Lessing Field.

Junior Brittany Bisnott (Brampton, Ont.) scored twice after the Purple Eagles trailed, 1-0, 23 minutes into the game. The forward notched her first goal of the game and team-leading 20th of the season in the 33rd minute when she crossed a shot from the right side into an empty net at the 33:22 mark to tie the game.

Niagara took a 2-1 lead just over a minute later when Bisnott got a cross from sophomore Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and she headed the ball down pass Saints’ keeper Patti Carroll for the eventual game winner.

Freshman Sara Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) made nine saves in net, including four in the second half to preserve the victory.

“I am extremely proud of this team. They showed so much determination to come back from a 1-0 deficit,” Niagara head coach Peter Veltri said. “This season has had its ups and downs, but over the last three weeks we’ve put everything together and played out best. This began eight years ago and there are a lot of people who should be proud of this moment like former student-athletes, administrators, fans and my family for all their support and love.”

Bisnott was named the tournament’s most valuable player, joining sophomore Stephanie Gartley (Sarnia, Ont.), Natalie Frost (Elmira, N.Y.) and Emily Montgomery (Oshawa, Ont.) on the all- tournament team.

The Purple Eagles find out who they will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Monday. The NCAA selection show starts at 3 p.m. on ESPNEWS.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The magical season for the women’s soccer team (12-7-1) came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tour- nament with a 3-1 loss to Penn State (16-4-3) at Jeffery Field, Friday. The Purple Eagles, fresh off their first-ever MAAC Championship, tied the game in the 74th minute, but could not hold off a late Nittany Lion surge.

Head coach Peter Veltri, who guided the team to its first ever NCAA appearance, was very proud of his team.

“We had a great season,” he said. “I am very happy for everyone, including our seniors. To finally get to taste this is an experience that they will always remember.”

The Nittany Lions controlled the tempo and kept the ball in their half throughout the first half, out-shooting the Purple Eagles, 8-5. PSU also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks, but the defense, freshman goalie Sarah Stephens (Toledo, Ohio) and the crossbar kept Penn State off the board, as the two teams went to the half in a scoreless tie. Twice a Nittany Lion striker had a shot at point-blank range that struck the crossbar and was sent out of the zone by Niagara.

Penn State finally broke through minutes into the second half when forward Ashley Myers blasted a rocket from 25 feet out that beat Ste- phens in the top right corner.

In the 74th minute, Shaylyn Lawrence (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) squeaked a pass behind the Penn State defense to a wide-open Emily Montgom- ery (Oshawa, Ont.). The senior midfielder fired a shot from the right slot past the Nittany Lion keeper that trickled over the line just inches inside the post, evening the score at 1-1.

The goal ignited a spark in the Purple Eagles and swung the momentum in Niagara’s favor as it quickly produced scoring chances in the next five minutes. A foul just outside the box gave Niagara its best shot to take the lead. Montgomery took a free kick and gave Lawrence a chance on the left side, but the sophomore’s kick sailed wide.

Penn State immediately turned that missed opportunity into a corner kick on the other end, and Heather Tomko netted the game-winning goal in the 81st minute. Penn State added the final tally with four minutes remaining for the final 3-1 margin.

Even in the loss, Veltri and the Purple Eagles were all smiles. Niagara won their first ever conference tourna- ment and made it to the NCAA Tour- nament for the first time in program history.
