Wuchereria bancrofti, W. kalimantani Palmieri, Pulnomo, Dennis & Marwoto, 1980 and six out of ten Brugia spp. have been described from Australia, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka and India. However, the origin and evolution of the species in the Wuchereria-Brugia clade remain unclear. While investigating the diversity of filarial parasites in Malaysia, we discovered an undescribed species in the common treeshrew Tupaia glis Diard & Duvaucel (Mammalia: Scandentia). Methods: We examined 81 common treeshrews from 14 areas in nine states and the Federal Territory of Peninsular Malaysia for filarial parasites. Once any filariae that were found had been isolated, we examined their morphological characteristics and determined the partial sequences of their mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and 12S rRNA genes. -

I. — Biological char- acters of Stephanofi laria assamensis Pande, 1936, a parasite of cattle, were studied under environmental conditions of Uzbekistan with the emphasis on morphology of all developmental stages. Bloodsucking fl ies Haematobia atripalpis Bezzi, 1895, Lyperosia titillans Bezzi, 1907 and L. irritans Linnaeus, 1758 were established as intermediate hosts. Prevalence of the nematode larvae in the fl ies constituted 2.1, 1.5, and 1.2 %, respectively. Characters for the species identifi cation were revised. On that basis S. zaheeri Singh, 1958 is regarded as a synonym of S. assamensis. Th e place of Stephanofi laria genus in the system of Steph- anofi lariidae is discussed. ABSTRACT Analysis of the Microfilariae-Specific Transcriptome
ABSTRACT Analysis of the Microfilariae-Specific Transcriptome of Brugia pahangi During Mosquito Infection Michael A. Cotten, M.S. Mentor: Cheolho Sim, Ph.D. Development of a transmission-blocking vaccine may provide cost-effective means of preventing the spread of lymphatic filariasis. Here, vaccine candidates were derived from the transcriptome profiles of two separate developmental life stages of B. pahangi: microfilarial and third-stage larval. Analysis of these differential transcripts provided a detailed overview of expression profiles unique to each developmental stage. Differentially expressed transcripts were scored before the 14 highest ranked transcripts were validated via qRT-PCR. Seven candidate genes were identified as potential targets for transmission- blocking vaccines; two types of Serpins, two types of Cathepsin, Hsp70, Ubiquitin, and Chitinase. Gene selection was limited to secretory or transmembrane proteins in order to increase the proficiency of transmission-blocking vaccine candidates. Finally, we discussed the potential role of each candidate gene in B. pahangi during the midgut infection stage in the mosquito Culex pipiens. A revision of Pelecitus Rail lief & Henry, 1910 (Filarioidea, Dirofilariinae) and evidence for the " capture " by mammals of filarioids from birds by Cheryl M. BARTLETT and Ellis C. GREENER Abstract. — A study has been made of the filarioid genus Pelecitus, species of which occupy sites associated with the limb joints of birds and mammals and which in some hosts are known to provoke chronic inflammation. The diagnosis of Pelecitus is emended and examination of specimens has ena- bled redescriptions of the following species : P. helicinus (Molin, 1860) (type species), P. circulons (Molin, 1860), P. tercostatus (Molin, 1860), P. fulicaeatrae (Diesing, 1861), P. anhingae Vuylsteke, 1957, P. polamaetus Vuylsteke, 1957, P. galli Dissanaike & Fernando, 1974, P. tubercauda Vander- burgh, Anderson & Stock, 1984, and P. vuylstekae nom. nov. (= P. ardeae sensu Vuylsteke, 1957). In agreement with previous authors, P. calamiformis (Schneider, 1866) is considered a junior synonym of P. tercostatus, and P. podicipitis (Yamaguti, 1935) a junior synonym of P. fulicaeatrae. Pelecitus armenica Chertkova, 1945, P. ceylonensis Dissanaike, 1967, and P. barusi Coy Otero, 1982, are considered valid but specimens were not available for examination. Two new species are descri- bed, P. andersoni n. sp. from a " macaw " imported into the United States from South America, and P. chabaudi n. sp. from Pernis apivorus (L.) in Switzerland. Pelecitus falconis (Rudolphi, 1819), P. serpentulus (Diesing, 1851), P. quadripapillosus (Molin, 1860) and P. ardeae (Molin, 1860) n. comb, remain or are designated herein as species inquirendae. Pelecitus alatus Walton, 1927, is regarded as a species incertae sedis. -

In gross pathological examination at Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira, Oulu (now Fish and Wildlife Health) Research Unit, Onchocerca sp. (Filarioidea; Onchocercidae) nematodes were detected in lesions. Due to this, a pilot study was made in order to find out what filarioid nematodes do occur in cattle, horses and sheep in Finland.
