I don’t even trust my own judgment on this point. 4 My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide. 5 So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. 6 Dear brothers and sisters, I have used Apollos and myself to illustrate what I’ve been saying. If you pay attention to what I have quoted from the Scriptures, you won’t be proud of one of your leaders at the expense of another. 7 For what gives you the right to make such a judgment? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if everything you have is from God, why boast as though it were not a gift? 8 You think you already have everything you need. -

KENT, JR. Some activities have a special appeal about them. People are drawn to certain pursuits because of the excitement generated by the activ- ity itself. Others are attracted by the financial rewards, by the adulation of an audience, or by the popular esteem in which some activities are held. The sense of satisfaction and fulfillment afforded by such occupations as medicine, education, and social work can lead to an entire career. The Christian ministry was once one of those highly respected vocations. Shifting attitudes in recent years, however, have caused changes in society's values. Our "scientific" age tends to place on the pedestal of public esteem the research scientist, the surgeon, and the sports hero. Yet the reasons why the Christian minister once headed the list of respected leaders in American life are still valid and worthy of serious reflection. The apostle Paul wrote in this passage about the activity that had captivated him. He was not attracted by any financial rewards, for it offered none to him. He gained from it no earthly pomp, no public prestige (except the respect of the Christians he had helped, and even this was mixed). He experienced abandonment and hatred that would demoralize most men. Nevertheless he was so enthralled with the privilege of Christian ministry that he made it his career and never found anything that could entice him away from this glorious passion of his life. -

Bediako Valley View University, Accra, Ghana 1 Corinthians 5:5 presents both exegetical and theo1logical difficulties that relate to the spirit-body dichotomy. After establishing the historical-literary context and analyzing the relevant lexical items of the text, the study submits that Paul’s verdict in 1 Corinthians 5:5 is figurative. The Apostle instructs the church to figuratively hand over the incestuous man to Satan (i.e., expel him from fellowship), so that in light of the accompanying disgrace and grief the man would come back to his senses, turn away from his sin, and be accepted back into fellowship. The contrast between “flesh” and “spirit” indicates that either of these terms refers to the person as a whole. It appears that generally Paul uses the “body-soul-spirit” terminology to refer to the totality of the person, but uses “body/flesh-spirit” terminology either as an abbreviation of “body-soul-spirit” or as another form of expressing the old creature/new creature dialectic of Christians. The apostle considers the issue critical to the well-being of the church, the sacred temple of God. Unfortunately, however, the Corinthian church seems conceited about this horrendous sin and Paul deprecates this attitude, stating that the church should rather be filled with grief and put the incestuous man out of their fellowship . -

[PRAYER] Lord, singing that song about holiness and holy, holy, holy, and just looking at all of the things about your character in your word and how we’re drawn into that. We just ask that you’d help us to focus in on that now. We ask, Lord, as we open your word and we study it that you would give us some fresh teaching. We may have passed through this verse before, some of us, as we’ve studied, but we ask that this teaching would be fresh. That as we read it this time your Holy Spirit would illuminate some new things that we haven’t seen before so we might live as different people, that you might change what we believe, change how we act, change our attitudes about things. Lord, we’re asking you to do a miracle in our hearts. I know that many people come here today with burdens on our hearts, pressures that we’re experiencing at work or at home or in their health or finances or whatever it might be. I ask that you would do a miracle today and reveal your presence and your power in a strategic way. We submit ourselves to you, Lord, to your word, and ask for you to use it today. 2 Cor Session 2
This morning we will continue our series on Paul’s early letters. Paul’s early letters all focused on establishing his young churches in the gospel. We finished 1 Corinthians and last session we turned our attention to 2 Corinthians. 2 Corinthians is a very different type of letter since it is not primarily focusing on the kerygma and didache, but rather on Paul’s relationship with the Corinthians. Why would he devote a large letter to his relationship with the Corinthians? We will continue addressing this issue this morning. Paul’s Early Epistles Specifically, this morning, we are going to focus on 2 Corinthians 2:12–7:5 It is a very special passage. We have a course on it in BILD’s Leadership Series I: Ministry Perspectives: Conflicts Without and Fears Within. Again, I was shaped profoundly in my thinking by a Ray Stedman book: Authentic Christianity (1973), which is basically completely built around 2 Corinthians 2:12– 7:5. ($9.99 on Kindle: 2 espressos—go cold turkey for one day and buy it.) Paul’s Early Epistles 12 However, when I came to Troas to announce the Messiah’s gospel, and found an open door waiting for me in the Lord, 13 I couldn’t get any quietness in my spirit because I didn’t find my brother Titus there. The integrity of the letter has so been put in doubt that even Paul’s authorship in the case of one passage (6:14—7:1) has, for plausible reasons, been called into question. The letter as we read it today appears to have seams, to have been sown together at a time unknown by an editor unnamed. Note the abrupt and, by current standards, inexplicable transitions between 2:13 and 14; 6:13 and 14; 7:1 and 2; 7:16 and 8:1; 8:24 and 9:1; and 9:15 and 10:1. -

The very worst seemingly characterization of someone is to be labeled "intolerant." This kind of thinking is often supported with quotations from the Bible. For example, Matthew 7:1–"Do not judge so that you will not be judged." Or Matthew 7:3-5–"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, `Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." In fact, there are a number of passages, which warn against judging one another. That would seem to settle it, but for the fact that there is another set of passages which instruct us to judge one another. For example, 1 Corinthians 5:12-13–"Do you not judge those who are within [the church]? But those who are outside, God judges." Or 1 Corinthians 6:2-3–"Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? If the world is judged by you, are you not competent [to constitute] the smallest law courts? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more matters of this life?" The Apostle Paul goes so far as to shame the Corinthian Church because no one will step forward to judge between two brothers in dispute: "I say [this] to your shame. -

Associate Professor of New Testament The Master’s Seminary A very familiar quotation in Christian circles is: “Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” It seems to be applied most often in the context of mixed marriages or mixed business partnerships. That admonition and its related command, “Come out from their midst and be separate…,” are central themes in a very important paragraph. As familiar as those two commands are, the context in which they are found is often totally disregarded in their application. The paragraph in which they are found – 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 – has been the center of great controversy for over a century. Some doubt that Paul even wrote these verses, while others question their position in the text. In order to correctly understand this passage and its message to the Corinthians and to the church as a whole throughout the centuries, it is essential to examine these verses contextually and historically and thereby come to an understanding of Paul’s purpose in penning these words in their given location in the text. * * * * * One of the most demanding exhortations of the New Testament is found in 2 Corinthians 7:1 where Paul states, “Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” This brings a fitting conclusion to a paragraph that begins with the command to “stop yoking yourselves together with unbelievers” (6:14a) and contains the command to “come out from their midst and be separate…and do not touch what is unclean” (6:17).
