Best when: Used in conjunction with our Basic Nutritional Protocol. Scientific studies document the synergistic role of vitamin D, fish oils, and a “multi-carotene” (as can be found in a high quality multi-vitamin or taken separately). Obviously eating 5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables per day and at least 10 servings per week of tomatoes serves as the healthiest way to get our nutrients… But this article is called “supplement of the week” for those who aren’t reaching recommended dietary guidelines. Carotenoids, the family of nutrients found so readily in our fruits and vegetables, provide profound and varied health-promoting qualities. The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that about every 34 seconds, an American will have a heart attack. In addition, the lifetime risk of having cardiovascular disease after age 40 is 2 in 3 men and more than 1 in 2 women. One of the primary risk factors for coronary artery disease is high levels of LDL cholesterol, known as "bad" cholesterol because it can build up on the inside of arteries, causing them to become narrow from plaque. Until recently, people with high levels of LDL cholesterol had very few tools to lower this risk factor directly, and had to rely solely on radical diet modifications and other indirect means of combating this condition. Physician-Industry Collaboration Building on an earlier discovery In 1971, Akira Endo, a Japanese biochemist working for the drug company Sankyo, began the search for a cholesterol-lowering drug. Earlier research had already shown that the body manufactures cholesterol mostly in the liver, using a special enzyme. Endo and his team reasoned that certain microorganisms may produce inhibitors of this enzyme to defend themselves against other organisms. The first agent they identified was mevastatin, a molecule produced by the fungus Penicillium citrinum. -

Although various microbes are involved in rice fermentation, their roles in the formation of volatile compounds, which are important to the characteristics of fermented rice, are not clear. In this study, diverse approaches, such as partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), metabolic pathway-based volatile compound formations, and correlation analysis between volatile compounds and microbes were applied to compare metabolic characteristics according to each microbe and determine microbe-specific metabolites in fermented rice inoculated by molds, yeasts, and lactic acid bacteria. Metabolic changes were relatively more activated in fermented rice inoculated by molds compared to other microbes. Volatile compound profiles were significantly changed depending on each microbe as well as the group of microbes. Regarding some metabolic pathways, such as carbohydrates, amino acids, and fatty acids, it could be observed that certain formation pathways of volatile compounds were closely linked with the type of microbes. Also, some volatile compounds were strongly correlated to specific microbes; for example, branched-chain volatiles were closely link to Aspergillus oryzae, while Lactobacillus plantarum had strong relationship with acetic acid in fermented rice. -

However, there are many health and dietary supplements (that claim to promote heart health) which can be purchased easily off the shelves. Are they EFFECTIVE? And more importantly, are they SAFE? SUPPLEMENTS WITH THEORECTICAL HEART BENEFITS L-Arginine Dilates your blood vessels, improves blood vessel function and increases blood flow to the heart. There is also some evidence that L-arginine has benefits in interrupting the snowball effect of heart failure. Despite these promising effects, the clinical benefits of L-arginine are limited. It is not necessary for you to take supplemental L-arginine for preventing heart disease. But if you decide to try it, L-arginine is usually safe for most patients. However L-arginine may cause a decrease in blood pressure. This could lead to hypotension, especially if you are taking other medications for hypertension. Carnitine An amino acid-like cofactor in muscles and the heart cells. It is involved in generating energy. Patients with heart failure seem to have decreased levels of carnitine in heart tissue. The evidence supporting carnitine is growing, but it is still fairly preliminary. There is not enough evidence to recommend the use of carnitine for heart disease prevention.
