The Gendered Feast: Experiencing a Georgian Supra Laura Joy Linderman Abstract: The supra is a traditionalized feast in post-Soviet Georgia characterized by abundant food and ritualized drinking. It is extremely common in social life, especially in rural Georgia. Secular rituals, social occasions, national and religious holidays and life cycle transitions are accompanied by the ubiquitous supra. The supra has been examined by anthropologists as a site for macro level analyses that put forward structural or cultural theories for the underlying meaning of this ritual-for-all-occasions. Women’s experiences of and roles in the supra have often been overlooked or misrepresented in these studies. In this thesis I investigate women’s varied roles at a supra and problematize the idea that the supra demonstrates a model of society, with a paragon of masculinity at the center. I question the static image of an idealized supra that is only capable of reproducing a particular cultural model and argue that the supra is flexibly employed with a great deal of social life being oriented around preparing and participating in supras. Women’s experiences of the supra (like men’s) is different depending on the type of supra, the other participants involved, the age of the woman, her class and her particular geographical location. Georgians have supras about 3 times a week to celebrate different things, whether it be a wedding, holiday, etc. In this case, the supra was for us. -

Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society 81, 2015, pp. 361–392 © The Prehistoric Society doi:10.1017/ppr.2015.17 Connected Histories: the Dynamics of Bronze Age Interaction and Trade 1500–1100 BC By KRISTIAN KRISTIANSEN1 and PAULINA SUCHOWSKA-DUCKE2 The Bronze Age was the first epoch in which societies became irreversibly linked in their co-dependence on ores and metallurgical skills that were unevenly distributed in geographical space. Access to these critical resources was secured not only via long-distance physical trade routes, making use of landscape features such as river networks, as well as built roads, but also by creating immaterial social networks, consisting of interpersonal relations and diplomatic alliances, established and maintained through the exchange of extraordinary objects (gifts). In this article, we reason about Bronze Age communication networks and apply the results of use-wear analysis to create robust indicators of the rise and fall of political and commercial networks. In conclusion, we discuss some of the historical forces behind the phenomena and processes observable in the archaeological record of the Bronze Age in Europe and beyond. It’s a funny scene with a great punchline and best of all: his wish comes true. He gets his wine and his bread, and he is restored. We too understand the happiness that simple pleasures can provide, when a solitary glass of wine can change your entire day. That’s why we built Dear Sainte Éloise – a place of simple pleasures and replenishment, and happiness, too. We like to think of this bar as a place where journeys are made and connections are forged. The pages of this wine list are filled with wines that have the ability to transport the drinker away from the everyday to fantastic faraway lands – from the beloved wine regions of Australia, to the incomparable sites of Europe, and beyond. This is a list that celebrates the great winemakers, who have defined what wine can and should be. But it’s a list that also gives a voice to the young, entrepreneurial and experimental winemakers of the present – those who will help define wine’s future. We believe that wine is an interconnected community full of sharing and learning, creating and drinking. -

Article history Abstract Received: 30-04-2018 We have studied 14 samples of dry fruits, titrated acidity, active acidity of 5 species of white grapes Revised: 10-05-2018 (Tsolikouri, Tsitska, Klarjula, Krakhuna and Kutaturi) spread in three regions of Western Georgia Accepted: 24-05-2018 - Adjara, Imereti and Samegrelo, and with the help of a spectral method there has been defined the following:the total phenols of Folin-Ciocalteu, the total flavonoids of aluminum chloride, the Corresponding Author: catechins of vanilla and the antioxidant activity using DPPH reagents. Due to the grape variety Maia Kharadze there has been found differences between the quantity content of biologically active compounds and Georgian Batumi Shota the antioxidant activity, dependent on it in a directly proportional correlation. Such varieties of Rustaveli State grapes as the Tsolikouri and the Tsitska, grown in Opcha (Imereti) and Keda (Adjara) are University, Batumi, distinguished by their high antioxidant activity. Red Winegrape Varieties for Long Island Vineyards
Strengthening Families & Communities • Protecting & Enhancing the Environment • Fostering Economic Development • Promoting Sustainable Agriculture Red Winegrape Varieties for Long Island Vineyards Alice Wise, Extension Educator, Viticulturist, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County February, 2013; rev. March, 2020 Contemplation of winegrape varieties is a fascinating and challenging process. We offer this list of varieties as potential alternative to the red wine varieties widely planted in the eastern U.S. – Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir. Properly sited and well-managed, these four varieties are capable of producing high quality fruit. Some regions have highlighted one of these varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc on Long Island and Cabernet Franc in the Finger Lakes. However, many industry members have expressed an interest in diversifying their vineyards. Clearly, there is room for exploration and by doing so, businesses can distinguish themselves from a marketing and stylistic viewpoint. The intent of this article is to introduce a selection of varieties that have potential for Long Island. This is by no means an exhaustive list. These suggestions merit further investigation by the winegrower. This could involve internet/print research, tasting wines from other regions and/or correspondence with fellow winegrowers. Even with a thoughtful approach, it is important to acknowledge that vine performance may vary due to site, soil type and management practices. Fruit quality and quantity will also vary from season to season. That said, a successful variety will be capable of quality fruit production despite seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The most prominent features of each variety are discussed based on industry experience, observations and results from the winegrape variety trial at the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center, Riverhead, NY (cited as ‘LIHREC vineyard’). -

The process began in the fall of 2011, when the Language and Cross-Culture component of Peace Corps Georgia launched a Georgian Country and Culture Guide project and PCVs from different regions volunteered to do research and gather information on their specific areas. After the initial information was gathered, the arduous process of merging the researched information began. Extensive editing followed and this is the end result. Georgian grapevine germplasm, which has formed for thousands of years, includes white, black, red, pink and grey 525 Vitis vinifera cultivars. In 2009–2014 up to 440 local grapevine varieties Vitis vinifera sativa has been restored. These varieties are cultivated in the LEPL Agriculture Scientific-Research Center grapevine collection GEO 038, Mtskheta Munisipal, village Jighaura, at an altitude 550 m. There are retrieved and recorded in the collection up to 60 forms of Vitis vinifera silvestris. In order to study biological and technological characteristics of Georgian grapevine, in 2012–2014 were investigated 50 Georgian widely cultivated white and colored wine and table grapes varieties, in the seven viticulture regions of Georgia. Description of grapevine varieties implemented through the descriptors for grapevine (IPGRI OIV). Botanical, biological- technological, qualitative and quantitative marks are characterized and evaluated. Investigation conducted during the biologic development phases were studied for chemical and eno-carpological characteristics. History of grapevine culture is strongly connected with Phonological development of phases studied and their the history of Georgian nation.
