Yet, arguably, the recently debated replication failure is nothing but a symptom of deeply rooted dichotomies and ontological commitments lying at its core. Undeniably, essential aspects of the human condition are typically studied in isolation via applying static categories, while philosophical considerations and human practice are largely neglected. In this context and drawing inspiration from real-life experience through a Vygotskian lens, this thesis attempts to motivate a systematic shift of focus from being to becoming; in fact becoming-with. More concretely, leaning on the dialectical method, cultural-historical theory and recent developments of social computational neuroscience, (i.) this thesis presents the dialectical attunement account which argues that a multiscale analysis of social interaction might allow us to scientifically reconsider the self, beyond the individual, where it really emerges, unfolds and manifests itself — in social relations. In this light, (ii.) it puts forward the dialectical misattunement hypothesis, which views autism and broadly psychopathology as a dynamic interpersonal mismatch, rather than a (disordered) function of single brains. Critically, (iii.) it operationalizes these hypotheses by establishing a novel empirical framework, namely two-person psychophysiology, which measures and analyzes the multiscale dynamics of social interaction. Deploying this framework, this thesis empirically demonstrates that (iv.) real-time dynamics of social interaction do matter in both collective and individual dimensions ‒ even beyond awareness‒ lending support to second-person and enactivist proposals. With regard to psychopathology, this thesis demonstrates that (v.) it is primarily the mismatch of autistic traits –not traits per se– which predicts core aspects of interpersonal attunement in real-life social relations, offering a first empirical validation of the dialectical misattunement hypothesis. Taken together, this thesis tries to break free from dichotomies such as internalism/externalism or healthy/patient, in experiential, theoretical, methodological and empirical regards. Such a dialectical and empirical approach to human becoming in and through social interaction encourages a social change pertinent to various fields of human research and practice, ranging from psychiatry and pedagogy to ethics and artificial intelligence.     Aporia vol. 23 no. 1—2013 Reexamining Enactivism GREGORY BLAKEMORE n Action in Perception and “Experience without the Head,” Alva Noë argues that what is perceived emerges as one actively moves about in Ithe environment. Moreover, the role of action is directly relevant for perceptual content, as it is enacted into existence. Noë’s goal is to devel- op an account of perceptual experience that supports an externalism in which perceptual experience does not need to be explained in terms of the brain, but includes external processes (Block, 2005; Hurley, 1998; Noë, 2004). He refers to this account as the “sensorimotor account of percep- tion” (2004). More specifically for Noë, sensorimotor contingencies lead to an acquisition of sensorimotor knowledge. Sensorimotor knowledge is an intuitive knowledge that underwrites a perceiver’s understanding of how movement affects changes in sensation (O’Regan and Noë, Visual; Noë, 2004). Noë admits that he lacks a clear articulation of the precise nature of sensorimotor contingencies,1 which undercuts the adequacy of his model. Radical approaches in Situated/Embodied Cognitive Science (Enactivism) claim that social cognition consists in an emergent pattern of interaction between a continuously coupled organism and the (social) environment; it rejects representationalist accounts of cognition (Hutto & Myin, 2013). However, mainstream ESP (Barsalou, 1999, 2008) still takes a rather representation-friendly approach that construes embodiment in terms of specific bodily formatted representations used (activated) in social cognition. The sensorimotor theory of perceptual consciousness offers a form of enactivism in that it stresses patterns of interaction instead of any alleged internal representations of the environment. But how does it relate to forms of enactivism stressing the continuity between life and mind (and more particularly autopoiesis, autonomy, and valence)? We shall distinguish sensorimotor enactivism, which stresses perceptual capacities themselves, from autopoietic enactivism, which claims an essential connection between experience and autopoietic processes or associated background capacities. We show how autopoiesis, autonomous agency, and affective dimensions of experience may fit into sensorimotor enactivism, and we identify differences between this interpretation and autopoietic enactivism. By taking artificial consciousness as a case in point, we further sharpen the distinction between sensorimotor enactivism and autopoietic enactivism. We argue that sensorimotor enactivism forms a strong default position for an enactive account of perceptual consciousness. Keywords. The reasons for this are complex, of course, and they include sociological factors which we cannot consider here, but to put it briefly: many have doubted the ambition to establish law-like relationships between mental states and behavior that dispense with any sort of mentalistic or intentional idiom, judging that explanations of intelligent behavior require reference to qualia and/or mental events2. Today, when behaviorism is discussed at all, it is usually in a negative manner, either as an attempt to discredit an opponent’s view via a reductio, or by enabling a position to distinguish its identity and positive claims by reference to what it is (allegedly) not. In this paper, however, we argue that the ghost of behaviorism is present in influential, contemporary work in the field of embodied and enactive cognition, and even in aspects of the phenomenological tradition that these theorists draw on. A pragmatic reading, however, suggests non-mental forms of constructivism that simultaneously fit core tenets of enactivism and ecological realism. After advancing a pragmatic version of enactive constructivism that does not obviate realism, I reinforce the position with an empirical illustration: Physarum polycephalum, a communal unicellular organism that leaves slime trails that form chemical barriers that it avoids in foraging explorations. Here, environmental building and sensorimotor engagement are part of the same process with P. polycephalum coordinating around self-created, affordance-bearing geographies, which nonetheless exist independently in ways described by ecological realists. For ecological psychologists, affordances are values, meaning values are external to the perceiver.     12 Enactivism and the Embodied Mind 12.1 Embodied, embedded, extended, enactive In the wake of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological philosophy, Gibson’s ecological psychology, and the critiques of artificial intelligence by Dreyfus, increasing numbers of philosophers of mind and cognitive scien- tists began to question the rationalist assumptions that were foundational in the cognitive sciences. What these three historical precursors to what are now called “enactivism” and “embodied mind” have in common is a recognition of the importance of the body and action in understanding our mental lives. They also share a skepticism about internal, mental representations. To paraphrase Alva Noë (2004), experience is not some- thing that happens to our brains; instead, it is something we do, typically by moving our bodies around our physical and cultural environments. Enactivism and the embodied mind took shape in the 1980s and early 1990s. Arguably the true founding of both embodied mind and enactivism comes with The Embodied Mind by Francisco Varela, Evan Thompson, and Eleanor Rosch (1991). This book fuses Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and work in neuroscience and situated robotics. The key claim of the book is that cognition does not involve computation or inter- nal representations, but is instead a basic activity of living things. We draw on those resources to tell a pedagogical tale about cognition and affect in settings of mathematical learning. Our interest is first captured in the way in which one teacher’s priority of establishing an inclusive learning community, occasionally harboured what appeared to be pedagogically restrictive conceptions of mathematics. Yet, the classroom practices that produced these conceptions promoted the students’ motivation and provided meaningful access to mathematical learning within the classroom collectivity. In a second example, the postponement of scientific encapsulation in bodily imitations of planetary movement, kept alive a shared dynamic sense of an elliptical orbit. In both of these cases we draw on Spinoza’s work to show how the affectivity of classroom practice constituted conceptions of cognition and of mathematical activity crucially linked to the imperatives of participation. Abstract The full scope of enactivist approaches to cognition includes not only a focus on sensory-motor contingencies and physical affordances for action, but also an emphasis on affective factors of embodiment and intersubjective af- fordances for social interaction. This strong conception of embodied cognition calls for a new way to think about the role of the brain in the larger system of brain-body-environment. We ask whether recent work on predictive coding offers a way to think about brain function in an enactive system, and we sug- gest that a positive answer is possible if we interpret predictive coding in a more enactive way, i.e., as involved in the organism’s dynamic adjustments to its environment. Keywords: enactivism; sensory-motor contingencies; affect; intersubjectivity; predictive coding. Enactivism is one version of recently developed embodied approaches to cog- nition. It offers an approach that is more informed by phenomenology and pragmatism than other versions of embodied cognition, such as the extended mind hypothesis (Clark 2008; Clark and Chalmers 1998), and more radical than the kind of “moderate” (Goldman 2012) or “weak” (Alsmith and Vignemont 2012) embodied cognition found in theorists who locate the body “in the brain” or who translate all bodily action into body-formatted represen- tations (e.g., Berlucci and Aglioti 2010; Gallese and Sinigaglia 2012; Goldman and Vignemont 2010).
