  • District Profile Nalanda Introduction
DISTRICT PROFILE NALANDA INTRODUCTION Nalanda district is a part of the Patna division Nalanda is famous all over the world for the ancient International Monastic University established in 5th century BC, which taught Vedas, Logic, Grammar, Medicine, Meta-Physics, Prose Composition and Rhetoric Nalanda district is popularly known as Biharsharif. The rivers Phalgu, and Mohane flows through the district of Nalanda. Agriculture is the main source of occupation Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Nalanda. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The ancient university town of Bihar, goes back to the days of Buddha and Mahavira in the Sixth Century B.C. The town was home to Nalanda Mahavihara, a monastic university of international repute Both Buddha and Mahavira often stayed at Nalanda during the rainy season. Buddhist scriptures reveal that they once stayed at Nalanda at the same time, but there is no record of them meeting one another. It was a flourishing hub where the philosopher and alchemist, Nagarjuna, studied and taught in the Second Century A.D. However, excavations have not revealed anything to suggest that the site was occupied before the Gupta period (Fifth Century A.D.), the earliest finds being a copper plate of Samudragupta and a coin of Kumaragupta (414-455 A.D.). Fa-Hien who visited in the Fifth Century A.D. makes no mention of the massive monastic establishments at Nalanda. But Hiuen Tsang who came in A.D 637 during Harsha's reign (606-647 A.D.) refers to the great monastery that Harsha endowed with liberal grants. ADMINISTRATIVE Biharsharif town is the district headquarters.

  • A Contemplative Journey of Post- Independence Progress in Higher Education of Bihar
Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 A Contemplative journey of Post- Independence progress in Higher education of Bihar Dr. Kumari Vineeta Faculty of Education (B.Ed.), S.M.College, Bhagalpur,India Email:[email protected] Abstract:- Bihar has an illustrious and immortal history of organized education system. It is the torch bearer for higher education in India as well as for entire globe with two ancient epicenter of learning in Aryavart as Nalanda and Vikramshila, which were established in 5th and 8th century respectively. In ancient era successive invasion including Aryans, Greeks, Mughals, Mongols, and Europeans till British not only affected our culture but also our education system. Most of them tried to ruin our education system and cultures as these were our greatest strength. British rulers initiated Anglo cultures and modernize our education system for their materialistic gain. India as well as Bihar became victim of British rulers too but in later period they tried to educate our people .In this series in Higher education they established first three universities in 1863 in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras . But Bihar got its first and only university in British rule in 1917 as Patna University. After independence it was expected that this condition will be better but till now it is again in one of the worst position in higher education with respect to the other states of our country. Hence it becomes necessary to overview its recent position, condition and reason behind it for its betterment. Recently, Gross enrolment ratio of Bihar is 13.0 whereas in India its 25.8 in which GER of male is 14.5 and female is 11.5 whereas in India its 26.3 for Male and 25.4 for women.

The word 'Nalanda' is derived from 'nāla' meaning a stem of a lotus flower. It is a symbol of generating knowledge or wisdom and 'dā' means to give. Nalanda, therefore, means place to bestow knowledge or wisdom. It is said that 10,000 students and 1500 ācāryas resided in Nalanda at one time. During the lifetime of the Buddha Nalanda was an important centre of religious activity. The Buddha's chief disciples, Sāriputta and Moggallāna, came from the nearby villages of Nālaka and Kulika. The names of several lay followers of the locality also figured prominently in the literary sources. According to early sources, Nalanda was a 'yojana' away from the outskirts of Rājagriha, the capital of the great Magadhan Empire.
