The Council area is split into two distinct geographical types: the western part of the Council area is dominated by the Grampian mountain range and includes large areas of forest and moorland. The northern, eastern and southern parts of the Council area are somewhat less mountainous with large expanses of agricultural land, coastal grassland and a greater density of small towns. The population of the Aberdeenshire Council area is approximately 240,000 with largest urban populations residing in Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Inverurie, Stonehaven, Westhill and Ellon. A large proportion of the Aberdeenshire population is involved in the off-shore oil and gas industry. A significant proportion of the population are also involved in the traditional industries of farming, forestry and fishing with approximately one third of Scotland’s agricultural produce originating in the region. In line with the vision of Energetica, it is expected that new development in Balmedie will contribute to transforming the area into a high quality lifestyle, leisure and global business location. Balmedie is expected to become an increasingly attractive location for development as the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route reaches completion and decreases commuting times to Aberdeen. It is important that the individual character of the village is retained in the face of increased demand. The village currently has a range of services and facilities, which should be sustained during the period of this plan. In addition, the plan will seek to improve community facilities, including new health care provision.

CRAIGSTON CASTLE. THE excursion of the Banffshire Field Club to Craigston Castle, which had been postponed from June 25th on account of the stormy character of the weather, took place on Saturday last. A large party of ladies and gentlemen left Banff about eleven o'clock to avail them- selves of the kind invitation of Captain Urqnhart, conveyed through the Eev. Mr Walker, The Parsonage, Banff, to visit Craigston, and inspect its treasures of art and antiquity. On arriving at the castle, they were joined by other members of the Club with their friends, raising the number of the whole party of visitors to about forty. A group of eager listeners soon formed on the lawn in front of the house around the Rev. J. Milne, one of the vice-presidents of the Society, and conductor for the day. Mr MILNE began by giving an account of the genea- logy and history of the family of Urquhart. This family, he said, can be traced to Adam, appointed Sheriff of Cromartie by David II in 1357. The family has been sometimes represented as descended from William, who held the office of Sheriff of Cromartie in 1296, when Edward I. ordered a list of the Sheriffs of Scotland, the first extant, to he drawn up; but this William appears to have been called Montalto in Latin —that is Mowat in English.

    Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan 2012 Supplementary Guidance Volume F Settlement Statements Formartine This volume contains detailed proposals for development within the settlements in Formartine, for which locations have been identified in the Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan. For the avoidance of doubt each individual settlement statement is supplementary guidance under the terms of section 22 of part 2 of the Planning etc. (Scotland) Act 2006. The Local Development Plan, and in particular Part 4 (the spatial strategy), Part 6 (the proposals maps) and Schedules 1 to 4, contains the appropriate context and establishes the main principles on which these individual statements of supplementary guidance are based. The Local Development Plan expressly refers to these settlement statements as a means of providing further detail in respect of the proposals. The information contained within the settlement statements is based on the available information at the date of publication. The settlement is characterised by the woodland setting of Balmedie House and the long sand beaches of Balmedie Country Park. Balmedie is a key settlement in both the Energetica area and the Aberdeen to Peterhead strategic growth area (SGA). As such, Balmedie will play an important role in delivering strategic housing and employment allowances. In line with the vision of Energetica, it is expected that new development in Balmedie will contribute to transforming the area into a high quality lifestyle, leisure and global business location. Balmedie is expected to become an increasingly attractive location for development as the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route reaches completion and decreases commuting times to Aberdeen. It is important that the individual character of the village is retained in the face of increased demand. The village currently has a range of services and facilities, which should be sustained during the period of this plan. In addition, the plan will seek to improve community facilities, including new health care provision.
