THE GREAT VIGIL OF April 3, 2021

THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER

The service begins in the darkened and in silence awaits the arrival of the Sacred Ministers.

THE LIGHTING OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE

All stand. In the darkness, fire is kindled; after which the Celebrant addresses the People, saying

Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Christ passed over from death unto life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.

The Celebrant then blesses the new fire, saying

O God, who through thy Son hast bestowed upon thy people the brightness of thy light:  Sanctify this new fire; and grant that in this Paschal feast we may so burn with heavenly desires, that with pure minds we may attain to the festival of everlasting light; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

With a stylus the Celebrant cuts a cross into the Paschal Candle, making at the top the Greek letter Alpha and at the bottom the Greek letter Omega, and within the four corners of the Cross the numerals of the current year, saying

| Christ yesterday and today; — the Beginning and the End, A Alpha Ω and Omega: 2 his are the times 0 and the ages; 2 to him be glory and dominion 1 through all the ages of eternity. Amen.

As the Celebrant inserts the five waxen nails containing the grains of he says

At the top By his wounds, At the center holy and glorious, At the base may Christ the Lord At the left guard us At the right and preserve us. Amen.

The Celebrant now lights the Paschal Candle, held before him by the , saying

May the Light of Christ, gloriously rising, dispel all darkness of heart and mind.

The Deacon, bearing the Paschal Candle, thrice sings

The Light of Christ.

All genuflect and answer

Thanks be to God.

Candles are lit and held throughout the singing of the .

THE PRAISE OF EASTER Exsultet jam angelica turba cælorum The Paschal Candle is placed in its stand. The Deacon censes the Paschal Candle and then the Deacon, standing near the Paschal Candle, sings

Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and of angels, and let thy trumpets shout salvation for the victory of our mighty King.

Rejoice and sing now, all the round earth, bright with a glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King.

Rejoice and be glad now, Mother Church, and let thy holy courts, in radiant light, resound with the praises of thy people.

Deacon The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Deacon Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up unto the Lord. Deacon Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People It is meet and right so to do.

2

The Deacon continues

It is very meet and right, at all times and in all places, with our whole heart and mind and voice, to praise thee, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, and thine only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who at the feast of the Passover paid for us the debt of Adam’s sin, and by his blood delivered thy faithful people.

Now, therefore, we sacrifice our Passover, in which for us the very is slain, by whose Blood his faithful people are made holy.

This is the night, when thou broughtest our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the Red Sea on dry land.

This is the night, when all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to grace and holiness of life.

This is the night, when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave.

How wonderful and beyond our knowing, O God, is thy mercy and loving- kindness to us thy children. Behold, what love he hath bestowed upon us, who to redeem a servant, delivered up his only Son. O blessed iniquity, for whose redemption such a price was paid by such a Savior.

How holy is this night, when wickedness is put to flight, and sin is washed away. It restoreth innocence to the fallen, and joy to those who mourn. It casteth out pride and hatred, and bringeth peace and concord.

How blessed is this night, when earth and heaven are joined and man is reconciled to God.

Therefore, O holy Father, accept the evening sacrifice of this lighted candle, which thy holy Church maketh before thee, and offereth unto thee by the hands of thy servants, the work of the bees, thy creatures. May it shine continually to drive away all darkness, as we celebrate the glad solemnity of our redemption. May Christ, the Morning Star that knoweth no setting, find it ever burning—he who doth give his light to all creation. Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

LESSON Genesis 1:1–2:4 The story of Creation

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was 4

good. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”

So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

PSALM 33:8–11 Timeat Dominum omnis terra (Mode V)

Let all the earth fear the LORD: stand in awe of him, all ye that dwell in the world. For he spake, and it was done: he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: and maketh the devices of the people to be of none effect, and casteth out the counsels of princes. The counsel of the LORD shall endure for ever: and the thoughts of his heart from generation to generation.

LESSON Genesis 22:1–18 Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac

After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.” Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you 6

have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”

The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, “By myself I have sworn, says the LORD: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice.”

PSALM 33:13–14, 20–21 De cælo respexit Dominus (Tone V.1)

The LORD looked down from heaven, and beheld all the children of men: from the habitation of his dwelling he considereth all them that dwell on the earth. He fashioneth all the hearts of them: and understandeth all their works. For our heart shall rejoice in him: because we have hoped in his holy Name. Let thy merciful kindness, O LORD, be upon us: like as we do put our trust in thee.

LESSON Exodus 14:10–31; 15:20–21 Israel’s deliverance at the Red Sea

As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the LORD. They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” But Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the LORD will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. But you lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground. Then I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and so I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his chariot drivers. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gained glory for myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his chariot drivers.”

The angel of God who was going before the Israelite army moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them and took its place behind them. It came between the army of Egypt and the army of Israel. And so the cloud was there with the darkness, and it lit up the night; one did not come near the other all night.

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. The Israelites went into the sea on dry ground, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left. The Egyptians pursued, and went into the sea after them, all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and chariot drivers. At the morning watch the LORD in the pillar of fire and cloud looked down upon the Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into panic. He clogged their chariot wheels so that they turned with difficulty. The Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the Israelites, for the LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and chariot drivers.” So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at dawn the sea returned to its normal depth. As the Egyptians fled before it, the LORD tossed the Egyptians into the sea. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the chariot drivers, the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea; not one of them remained. But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters forming a wall for them on their right and on their left.

8

Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. Israel saw the great work that the LORD did against the Egyptians. So the people feared the LORD and believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses.

Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”

CANTICLE Cantemus Domino (Tone VIII.1)

Let us sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and song; and he is become my salvation: He is my God, and I will praise him; my fathers’ God, and I will exalt him. Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? Thou stretchedst out thy right hand; the earth swallowed them. Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed; thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. Thou shalt bring them in and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, In the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in; in the , O LORD, which thy hands have established.

LESSON Isaiah 55:1–11 Salvation offered freely to all

Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

PSALM 42:2–3, 6–7 Quemadmodum desiderat (Mode III.4)

My soul is athirst for God, yea, even for the living God: when shall I come to appear before the presence of God? My tears have been my meat day and night: while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy God? Why art thou so full of heaviness, O my soul: and why art thou so disquieted within me? LESSON Ezekiel 37:1–14 The valley of dry bones

The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the LORD and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O LORD God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the LORD God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD.”

So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the LORD God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude.

Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the LORD God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken and will act,” says the LORD.

PSALM 30:1, 3, 12–13 Exaltabo te, Domine (Mode VIII.1)

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People It is meet and right so to do.

The Celebrant continues We thank thee, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it thou didst lead the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it thy Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank thee, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to thy Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water with the Paschal Candle thrice

Now sanctify this water, we pray thee, by the power of thy Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to thee, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

EPISTLE Romans 6:3–11

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Subdeacon The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY Mark 16:1–8 Deacon The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Deacon The  Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory be to thee, O Lord.

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

ORATE FRATRES AC SORORES The Celebrant may offer intentions of the Mass and then says Pray, my brothers and sisters, that this our sacrifice may be acceptable unto God the Father Almighty. People May the Lord receive this sacrifice at thy hands, to the praise and glory of his Name, both to our benefit and that of all his holy Church.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER D Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them up unto the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. People It is meet and right so to do.

Facing the Altar, the Celebrant proceeds It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, to glorify thee, O Father, and to give thanks unto thee, for thou alone art God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before all time and for ever.

Fountain of life and Source of all goodness, thou hast made all things and didst fill them with thy blessing, creating them to rejoice in the splendor of thy radiance.

21

Countless throngs of angels stand before thee to serve thee night and day; and, beholding the glory of thy presence, they offer thee unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we praise thee, and glorify thy Name, saying

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.

 Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. in the highest.

The People kneel and the Celebrant continues We acclaim thee, holy Lord, glorious in power, whose mighty works reveal thy wisdom and love. Thou hast formed us in thine own image, giving the whole world into our care, that in obedience unto thee, our Maker, we might rule and serve all thy creatures. When our disobedience took us far from thee, thou didst not abandon us to the power of death, but in thy mercy thou didst come to our help, that in seeking thee we might find thee. Again and again thou didst call us into covenant with thee, and through the prophets thou didst teach us to hope for salvation.

Thou didst so love the world, O Father, that in the fullness of time thou didst send thine only-begotten Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. That thy purpose might be fulfilled, he gave himself up unto death; and rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new.

And that we might live no longer unto ourselves, but unto him who died for us and rose again, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, bringing to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by thee, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end: At supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks unto thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink ye all of this: For this is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, for the remembrance of me.”

22

And now, O Father, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to thy right hand, awaiting his coming in glory, and offering unto thee, from the gifts which thou hast given us, this bread and this cup, we praise thee and we bless thee.

The Celebrant and People say We praise thee, we bless thee, we give thanks to thee, and we pray to thee, O Lord our God.

The Celebrant continues We beseech thee, O Lord, that in thy goodness and mercy thy Holy Spirit may  descend upon us and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and revealing them as holy gifts for thy holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant that all who share this bread and this cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of thy Name.

Remember, O Lord, thy one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the Blood of thy Christ. Reveal her unity, guard her faith, and preserve her in peace.

And grant that we may find our inheritance with the ever-blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, blessed Paul, our Patron, and all the saints who have found favor with thee in ages past. We praise thee in union with them and give thee glory through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, all honor and glory be unto thee, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, world without end. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Celebrant And now as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

23

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

ECCE Facing the people, the Celebrant offers the following invitation  Behold the Lamb of God; behold him that taketh away the sins of the world. People Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

AN ACT OF In union, dear Lord, with the faithful at every altar of the Church where Thy Blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer Thee praise and thanksgiving. I believe that Thou art truly present in the Holy Sacrament. And since I cannot at this time receive Thee sacramentally, I beseech Thee to come spiritually into my soul. I unite myself unto Thee, and embrace Thee with all the affections of my heart. Let me never be separated from Thee. Let me live and die in Thy Love. Amen.

AT COMMUNION Christ rising again (Thomas Weelkes, 1576–1623) Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:9–11

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:20–22

POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with thy spirit. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty and everliving God, People we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

24

THE EASTER BLESSING The Celebrant blesses the People saying The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting Covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well- pleasing in his sight; and the blessing, mercy, and grace of God Almighty, the  Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

DISMISSAL The Deacon dismisses the People, saying Let us go forth in the name of Christ, alleluia, alleluia. People Thanks be to God, alleluia, alleluia.
