Lamb of God, Maria Laughlin

THE GREAT VIGIL OF APRIL 3, 2021 8:00 P.M.

THIS IS CHRIST’S HOUSE. Come you who feel weak and unworthy. Come you who come often and you who have stayed away. Come you who love , and you who wish you could. Come sinners and saints, women and men, gay and straight, young and old. Come you who are lonely and long for friendship. Come you who are homeless, and you who have a place to rest your heads. Come you who are citizens of this land, and you who are not. Here you are citizens of the kingdom of God. Come join God’s people at the feast prepared for you from the beginning of the world.

THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER is the fullest expression of Christian life and joy. On this night, the gathered community enters into the heart of our faith. We begin in darkness and move toward resplendent light and glory. We make a pilgrimage from place to place, finding our way to the Holy Table, where we feast in sign and symbol of God’s kingdom. We hear the stories of salvation history from the beginning of time, and we go forth to bring light, healing, and salvation to the new creation that this liturgy manifests for us. We begin in darkness, with nothing. Out of this darkness, a new fire is kindled. This recalls both the creation of light–the first creative act by God–and the light that is brought into the world in the new creation of Jesus Christ. From the new fire, we light the Paschal Candle, which stands as a symbol of Christ, both in its association with light and in the Candle’s association with . Next, the sings the , an ancient in which vivid imagery illumines our purpose in gathering: “Rejoice and sing now, all the round earth, bright with glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King.” This hymn is a raucous celebration of the mighty power exhibited in the resurrection, when light overcame darkness, when love overcame sin, and when life overcame death. We proceed to hear stories from the Hebrew Scriptures, when God acted to create the world and to care for a covenant people. After each reading, we respond by singing scripture, either a psalm or a . Then we pray together one of the ancient . In this way, we hear of God’s work, we sing praises to God, and to pray to God. Following our readings, we recall that we have been baptized into new life. We chant the litany of saints, inviting saints from all of history to join with us, since baptism brings us into the fellowship of the of saints, then renew our own baptismal promises. Then comes the highlight of the night: Easter is joyously proclaimed! After we sing our joyous acclamation three times, we sing the Gloria for the first time in the Easter season. The Holy Table is made ready for the Eucharist, and we begin the first Eucharist of Easter. At the Holy Table, we invite Jesus to be made known to us in the breaking of the bread, just as he was made known to his disciples. We go forth from the in celebration of Christ’s resurrection in Israel some 2,000 years ago, and we go forth from the church in celebration of Christ’s new life in us, the .

Acknowledgement We respectfully acknowledge that we are on the unceded ancestral lands of the Duwamish people. The Duwamish people are still here, and with gratitude we pay our respects to them as they continue to honor and bring to light their ancient heritage 2 THE LIGHTING OF THE PASCHAL CANDLE Fire is kindled Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death. Let us pray. O God, through your Son you have bestowed upon your people the brightness of your light: Sanctify this new fire, and grant that in this Paschal feast we may so burn with heavenly desires, that with pure minds we may attain to the festival of everlasting light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EXSULTET

The Deacon, standing near the Paschal Candle, chants the Exsultet.

Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and of angels, and let your trumpets shout Salvation for the victory of our mighty King. [ . . . ]

[ . . . ] through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with him, in the unity of the , one God,

It is truly right and good, always and everywhere, with our whole heart and mind and voice to praise you, the invisible, almighty, and eternal God, and your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord [ . . . ]

3 [ . . . ] May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning-he who gives his light to all creation, and who lives and reigns. . .

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Celebrant Let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, how he saved his people in ages past; and let us pray that our God will bring each of us to the fullness of redemption.

FIRST STORY: THE STORY OF CREATION GENESIS 1:1 – 2:4 PSALM 33:1-11

Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous; * it is good for the just to sing praises. Praise the LORD with the harp; * play to him upon the psaltery and lyre. Sing for him a new song; * sound a fanfare with all your skill upon the trumpet. For the word of the LORD is right, * and all his works are sure. He loves righteousness and justice; * the loving-kindness of the LORD fills the whole earth. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, * by the breath of his mouth all the heavenly hosts. He gathers up the waters of the ocean as in a water-skin * and stores up the depths of the sea. Let all the earth fear the LORD; * let all who dwell in the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it came to pass; * he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD brings the will of the nations to naught; * he thwarts the designs of the peoples. But the LORD'S will stands fast for ever, * and the designs of his heart from age to age.

4 SECOND STORY: THE FLOOD GENESIS 7:1-5, 11-18, 8:6-18, 9:8-13 PSALM 46

God is our refuge and strength, * a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, * and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea; Though its waters rage and foam, * and though the mountains tremble at its tumult. The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, * the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be overthrown; * God shall help her at the break of day. The nations make much ado, and the kingdoms are shaken; * God has spoken, and the earth shall melt away. The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come now and look upon the works of the LORD, * what awesome things he has done on earth. It is he who makes war to cease in all the world; * he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire. "Be still, then, and know that I am God; * I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth." The LORD of hosts is with us; * the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

5 THIRD STORY: ISRAEL’S DELIVERANCE AT THE RED SEA EXODUS 14:10-31; 15:20-21 CANTICLE 8: Song of Moses

I will sing to the Lord, for he is lofty and uplifted; * the horse and its rider has he hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my refuge; * the Lord has become my Savior. This is my God and I will praise him, * the God of my people and I will exalt him. The Lord is a mighty warrior; * Yahweh is his Name. The chariots of Pharaoh and his army has he hurled into the sea; * the finest of those who bear armor have been drowned in the Red Sea. The fathomless deep has overwhelmed them; * they sank into the depths like a stone. Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in might; * your right hand, O Lord, has overthrown the enemy. Who can be compared with you, O Lord, among the gods? * who is like you, glorious in holiness, awesome in renown, and worker of wonders? You stretched forth your right hand; * the earth swallowed them up. With your constant love you led the people you redeemed; * with your might you brought them in safety to your holy dwelling. You will bring them in and plant them * on the mount of your possession, The resting-place you have made for yourself, O Lord, * the , O Lord, that your hand has established. The Lord shall reign * for ever and for ever.

FIFTH STORY: LEARN WISDOM AND LIVE PROVERBS 8:1-8, 19-21, 9:4-6 PSALM 19

The heavens declare the glory of God, * and the firmament shows his handiwork. One day tells its tale to another, * and one night imparts knowledge to another. Although they have no words or language, * and their voices are not heard, Their sound has gone out into all lands, * and their message to the ends of the world. In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; * it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course.

7 It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens and runs about to the end of it again; * nothing is hidden from its burning heat. The law of the LORD is perfect and revives the soul; * the testimony of the LORD is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. The statutes of the LORD are just and rejoice the heart; * the commandment of the LORD is clear and gives light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean and endures for ever; * the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, * sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. By them also is your servant enlightened, * and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can tell how often he offends? * cleanse me from my faults. Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me; * then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, * O LORD, my strength and my redeemer. Antiphon COLLECT

9 RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS LITANY OF SAINTS

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS The Celebrant says to the People Through the , dear friends, we are buried with Christ by Baptism into his death, and raised with him to newness of life. I call upon you, therefore, now that our Lenten observance is ended, to join me in renewing the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and all his works, and promised to serve God faithfully in his holy . Celebrant Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? People I do. Celebrant Do you believe in God the Father? People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Celebrant Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Celebrant Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

10 Celebrant Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? People I will, with God's help. Celebrant Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? People I will, with God's help. Celebrant Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? People I will, with God's help. Celebrant Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? People I will, with God's help. Celebrant Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? People I will, with God's help. Celebrant May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, who made this most holy night to shine with the glory of the Lord's resurrection: Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST LESSON ROMANS 6:3-11 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL MARK 16:1-8 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. Please make your pledge online at https://www.stpeterseattle.org/donate. Thank you for your generosity. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

15 Therefore, according to his command, O Father, We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory. And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary, the Mother of God, Peter our patron, and all your saints we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. THE LORD’S PRAYER
