Although a number of Welsh co-drivers have won Britain’s classic round of the FIA World Rally Championship, no Welsh driver has ever stood on the podium let alone won their home event. Indeed, no British driver has triumphed since Colin McRae and Richard Burns racked up three wins apiece in the glory years between 1994-2000. Llewellin (above), a double British Rally Champion in 1989 and 1990, led the event briefly when competing for Toyota in 1989, but ultimately never finished higher than sixth. www.wheelswithinwales.uk Now aged 57 and living in his native Pembrokeshire, the former champ still avidly follows the sport and is one of a number of Welsh Rally Legends being honoured on this year’s Wales Rally GB. What’s more, he firmly believes that the country’s latest rallying star, Evans from Dolgellau, has what it takes to write the history books next week. “It would be fantastic to see Elfyn do it this year and I think he has a very good chance,” predicted Llewellin. “I’ve been watching him closely and he’s been improving over the last 18 months – he’s shown he’s one of the best in the world. No formal record of the Club ’s history or its activities existed before this task was under taken. I would particularly like to acknowledge the involvement of the following: Mike & Hilary Stratton , who were the driving force behind the w hole project and have spent countless hours in research and communication with past members , far and wide, a s well as many long journeys from their home in Devon to meet with the rest of us in the Midlands. The other members of the organising committee for the fiftieth anniversary celebrations for their hospitality at meetings, contribution of ideas, research fo r memorabilia , general good humour and enthusiasm that this milestone should be fittingly celebrated (in alphabetical order): Ray Barlow, Susan Butcher, Mike Harris, Nick Jones & Graham Towns hend. This publication has only been made possible by people tur ning out cupboards, garages and lofts to unearth long forgotten gems regarding the Club and its history. Foremost in this is Mike Adams, who has been the major source of information in that he has not thrown ANYTHING away sinc e he joined the Club in the mi d -1970s. Three big cardboard boxes arrived at my house one day in the early Spring of 2008, Ginny was not hap py when they were returned just over a year later, she thought she had seen the last of them..!! This year, with the help of the Audi Sport Press Office, we are able to offer journalists more information about the event, the competitors and route, as well as providing a back-up service for those journalists unable to attend. This privileged information places the press in a position of trust with the marshals, who have a duty to keep the rally moving as well as looking after the safety of everyone involved. Even in the fanatically pro-rally country of Wales, there are people who do not welcome events to their area. As Elfyn Evans sets about establishing himself in the World Rally Championship, this season has seen another son of a former British Rally Champion take his first steps in the sport. When Gwyndaf Evans won the Championship in 1996 he was following in the footsteps of his friend and rival David Llewellin who had taken the title in 1989 and 1990. Now David’s son, Ben is coming to the end of his first season in the sport. In this issue: We find out which former British Champion makes a terrible passenger. Tribute will be paid to a number of high-achieving sporting luminaries including both drivers and co-drivers. The impressive roster features World and British Champions as well as much-admired national heroes and multiple Rally GB winners. www.wheelswithinwales.uk All will be present on the event, renewing old friendships and rekindling past memories with photo and autograph opportunities. The special celebration was announced at the Wales Rally GB Media Preview hosted at Cholmondeley Castle and endorses the Welsh Government’s own ‘Year of Legends’ campaign, overseen by Visit Wales. The roll of honour is topped by two World Championship winning co-drivers. Phil Mills from Newtown, Powys guided Petter Solberg to the 2003 WRC title, as well as no fewer than four consecutive Rally GB victories between 2002 and 2005. David Richards CBE from Ruthin, Denbighshire took the 1981 crown with Ari Vatanen and more recently founded prominent motor sport company Prodrive – the crack team behind Subaru’s many WRC successes. Richards also found time to run the Benetton and BAR F1 operations and to be Chairman of Aston Martin.
