Keep Welsh Eyes on Elfyn Evans, Says David Llewellin www.wheelswithinwales.uk Keep Welsh eyes on Elfyn Evans, says David Llewellin Published: 19th October 2017 Author: Robin Roberts Online version: https://www.wheelswithinwales.uk/keep-welsh-eyes-on-elfyn-evans-says-david-llewellin/ Wales’s most successful rally driver, David Llewellin, is tipping his fellow countryman Elfyn Evans for great success and even an historic victory on Wales Rally GB 26-29 October. Although a number of Welsh co-drivers have won Britain’s classic round of the FIA World Rally Championship, no Welsh driver has ever stood on the podium let alone won their home event. Indeed, no British driver has triumphed since Colin McRae and Richard Burns racked up three wins apiece in the glory years between 1994-2000. Llewellin (above), a double British Rally Champion in 1989 and 1990, led the event briefly when competing for Toyota in 1989, but ultimately never finished higher than sixth. www.wheelswithinwales.uk Now aged 57 and living in his native Pembrokeshire, the former champ still avidly follows the sport and is one of a number of Welsh Rally Legends being honoured on this year’s Wales Rally GB. What’s more, he firmly believes that the country’s latest rallying star, Evans from Dolgellau, has what it takes to write the history books next week. “It would be fantastic to see Elfyn do it this year and I think he has a very good chance,” predicted Llewellin. “I’ve been watching him closely and he’s been improving over the last 18 months – he’s shown he’s one of the best in the world. If things work for him, we could see a Welsh winner.” Breaking news: Tänak to join Toyota Gazoo Racing next season Toyota has confirmed that Tänak will join Jari-Matti Latvala and Esapekka Lappi in the Finnish- based team for all 13 rounds. Tänak remains in contention for the 2017 drivers’ title after a breakthrough season at M-Sport World Rally Team in which he has won in Italy and Germany and is second in the championship with two rounds left. www.wheelswithinwales.uk Evans (left), who missed last year’s event while securing a top drive for 2017, already has two top six Wales Rally GB finishes under his belt. Now, as a member of the title-hunting M-Sport squad, he has underlined his potential with second places in both Argentina and Finland. The two loose surface rounds that are not dissimilar to the tricky conditions found in the legendary Welsh forests but can he and Lancashire-born co-driver Dan Barritt live up to Llewellin’s expectations and score what would be a hugely-popular win on home soil? “We’re really in for a classic event and it should present us with a really good opportunity,” he admitted. “Hopefully we can bring home a great result.” To do that, Evans will have to overcome Advance adult prices start at just £10 for a star-studded field that includes his two the opening Visit Conwy Tir Prince test on M-Sport team-mates Sébastien Ogier and Thursday evening, £23 for Saturday’s Ott Tänak as well as Hyundai’s top gun family-friendly Toyota RallyFest at Thierry Neuville – all three are still Cholmondeley Castle, £28 for a Day Pass locked in battle for this year’s WRC or £99 for the full four-day premium event crown. Although enjoying a best-ever pass (World Rally Pass). Accompanied season, sixth placed Evans is no longer children aged 15 and under are admitted in title contention. free. Whatever his prospects in Wales, the 28-year-old from Gwynedd is certainly looking forward to what promises to be a fantastic spectacle featuring a new era of even more powerful and spectacular rally cars. “The feeling driving these new-generation cars has been absolutely incredible all season, and I really hope that the spectacle on the outside will be everything that it is for us inside www.wheelswithinwales.uk the car,” grinned the 2012 WRC Academy champion. “There are some fantastic stages and this year, they will be combined with an element of endurance. Saturday in particular will be a tough stint, going back out in the evening in the dark – that will be tricky, as will the whole rally, to be fair. “I hope to see a lot of fans out there on the stages cheering us on. It’s normally a fantastic atmosphere, and I’m sure this year will be no exception. Hopefully we can reward them with something to cheer on Sunday afternoon.” Fans wanting to witness Evans’ efforts to make history can still take advantage of advance tickets which offer considerable discounts..

1984 Audi Sport National Rally After an extremely successful event in 1983 we at Audi are delighted to be returning to Wales as the sponsors of the 1984 Audi Sport National Rally and hopefully this year's event will attract the top international names that made the 1983 rally so exciting for both competitors and spectators alike. Based again in Aberystwyth, the Audi Sport National includes one or two different stages for competitors and also better spectator facilities for the tremendous number of people who now follow the Shell Oils/Autosport British Rally Championship of which our event is the final round of the 1984 series. The series which has this year seen an Audi Sport backed entry, the development Audi 80 Quattro driven by Darryl Weidner, as well as an ever increasing number of works backed entries from other manufacturers, who clearly recognise the importance and value of the championship, for development of both cars and drivers. Audi as technological leaders of the motor industry, originally saw rallying as the ideal proving ground for their products and a way to continue improvement of the Audi range. And the success of the turbocharged Audi Quattro over the past four years, has played an important part in the development of 4 wheel drive in the Audi range, which over the next few months will be available as an option throughout almost all the Audi model line up. The Audi National Rally as usual offers not only an exciting end to the British National Championship, but a traditional warm up to the combined RAC Rally, which uses many of the stages in the Audi and I hope this year's rally will provide the excitement and entertainments of last year's event despite equally traditional damp Welsh weather conditions.

  • 1991 Audi Sport Rally Media Manual
WELCOME TO THE 1991 AUDI SPORT INTERNATIONAL RALLY On behalf of the Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club, the Audi Sport International Rally Organising Committee is pleased to welcome members of the media to Telford for the finale of the Shell Open Rally Championship, the Audi Sport International Rally. This year, with the help of the Audi Sport Press Office, we are able to offer journalists more information about the event, the competitors and route, as well as providing a back-up service for those journalists unable to attend. This privileged information places the press in a position of trust with the marshals, who have a duty to keep the rally moving as well as looking after the safety of everyone involved. Even in the fanatically pro-rally country of Wales, there are people who do not welcome events to their area. By following the advice given in this book, we hope to make your day as safe, fruitful and exciting as possible, while retaining the classic Mid-Wales rally stages for future events. May I also take this opportunity to thank the many motoring journalists who have provided support and advice over the years, which has enabled us to improve the event and thereby pursue promotion to international status. Your part in our event cannot be underestimated. John Trevethick Clerk of the Course A MESSAGE FROM THE SPONSORS, AUDI SPORT OK Welcome once again to the Audi Sport International Rally. After nine years of backing from Audi and the excellent organisation of Wolverhampton and South Staffordshire Car Club, the event enjoys the coveted status of an international rally and membership of Britain's premier championship, the Shell Open Rally Championship.
