    The economic and social contribution of horse racing in Europe September 2009 European Pari Mutuel Association www.parimutuel -europe.org This document is part of a larger effort from EPMA to better describe the horseracing sector in Europe and to track its health over time. The document builds on a joint research investment by McKinsey and Company and EPMA members on the horse racing sector in Europe, to describe the economic flows in the industry and compare the funding of horse racing across countries, as well as to that of other sports. Building a comprehensive and rigorous fact base on the horse racing sector at the European level will be a progressive and long term effort that will be repeated by EPMA on a yearly basis in order to support their ongoing dialogue with policy decision makers in Europe. Members of EPMA are present in 10 countries, traditionally active in developing horseracing and horse breeding (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom). Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) chairman Clay Horner said the reaction he?s had to a new WEG / Meadowlands integrity rule (full story here) has been overwhelmingly positive, but there were enough serious concerns from some major industry players that the rule is now being tweaked.     HORSE PLAYER’S GLOSSARY A * - Before the late 1970s an asterisk or a star (*) before a horse’s name indicated that the horse was imported from a country outside of North America. = - An equal sign (=) in front of a horse’s name means that the horse is foreign-bred but has not been imported. () - A parenthesis after a horse’s name with: - A country’s abbreviation (IRE, FR, CHI, NZ) indicates what country the horse was foaled in and what stud book they are registered with. For example, (IRE)=Ireland, (FR)=France, (CHI)=Chile, (NZ)=New Zealand; indicates what country the horse was foaled in and what stud book they are registered with. - A number (46) means the number of days since last raced. - (d5.g) means size & dam & gelding - (P) means the horse pulled up in last race. - An asterisk or a star (*) at the end means the tipster thinks it may have a good chance of winning in the race it's now in. Abandoned - A race meeting which has been cancelled because a club did not receive sufficient nominations to be able to stage it, or because of bad weather which made racing on the track unsafe. All bets placed on abandoned races are fully refunded. Acceptor - A runner officially listed to start in a race. Accumulator - (Also, Parlay) A multiple bet. A single stake is used to generate two or more bets in succession. A kind of 'let-it-ride' bet. Making simultaneous selections on two or more races with the intent of pressing the winnings of the first win on the bet of the following race selected, and so on.
