Anolis aeneus can be distinguished by the blue-green ring around its eyes (Murphy 2011). The species is a medium sized anole, the length of males from the tip of the nose to the anus is 77 mm and females 55 mm (John et al. 2012). They have many lamellae (flaps) on their subdigital toepads. The dewlap (throat fan) extends from underneath their necks and has a pale gray, green or white colour, yellow or orange spots may also be present at the front edge of the dewlap (John et al. 2012). Colour: The dorsal side of the males may be grey, greyish brown, brown or a dull green, a bronze sheen is at times present, light or dark spots may be present in a crosswise pattern. The underside has a dull grey colour. The females may be grey or brown the mid-dorsal region can include a dark single stripe or a transverse stripe, juveniles are dark grey or brown (John et al. 2012). ECOLOGY. This species is endemic to Grenada and has been introduced to Trinidad and Tobago (Wikipedia 2012). It is an arboreal species and can therefore be found mostly on the trunk and branches of shaded trees, it is also populated in urban areas and can be observed on walls, railings and fences (Murphy 2011) it feeds on live insects and invertebrates such as crickets, roaches and spiders. -

The new species has been recorded between 1 138–2 500 m in the Nu River drainage between the towns of Liuku and Binzhongluo, and on the lower western slopes of the Nushan and eastern slopes of the Goaligongshan. The new species can be distinguished from other species of Japalura, except J. dymondi, by the following combination of characters: exposed tympani, prominent dorso-lateral stripes, and small gular scales. It is very similar with but differs from J. dymondi by having smooth or feebly keeled dorsal head scales, three relatively enlarged spines on either side of the post-occiput area, strongly keeled and mucronate scales on occiput area and within the lateral stripes, back of arm and leg green, higher number of dorsal-ridge scales (DS) and fourth toe subdigital scales (T4S). A principal component analysis of body measurements of adult male specimens of the new species and J. dymondi showed principal component 1 loading highest for upper arm length, fourth toe length and snout to eye length and principal component 2 loading highest for head width, head length and fourth toe length. -

A new species of anole, Anolis sierramaestrae sp. nov., belonging to the “chamaeleolis” species group of the family Polychrotidae, is described from the mountain region in the vicinity of La Mula village, Santiago de Cuba province, Cuba. The species represents the sixth so far known species of the “chamaeleolis” species group. It resembles Anolis chamaeleonides Duméril et Bibron, 1837, but differs markedly in larger body size, long and narrow head shape, higher number of barb-like scales on dewlap, small number of large lateral scales on the body and dark-blue coloration of the eyes. INTRODUCTION False chameleons of the genus Anolis Daudin, 1802 represent a highly ecologically specialized and morphologically distinct and unique clade endemic to Cuba Island (Cocteau 1838, Beuttell & Losos 1999, Schettino 2003, Losos 2009). This group has been traditionally recognized as a distinct genus Chamaeleolis Cocteau, 1838 due to its multiple derived morphological, eco- logical and behavioural characters. Recent studies discovering the cladogenesis of anoles have placed this group within the main body of the tree of Antillean anoles as a sister group of a small clade consisting of the Puerto Rican species Anolis cuvieri Merrem, 1820 and hispaniolan A. -

The diverse group of Asian wolf snakes of the genus Lycodon represents one of many poorly understood radiations of advanced snakes in the superfamily Colubroidea. Outside of three species having previously been represented in higher-level phylogenetic analyses, nothing is known of the relationships among species in this unique, moderately diverse, group. The genus occurs widely from central to Southeast Asia, and contains both widespread species to forms that are endemic to small islands. One-third of the diversity is found in the Philippine archipelago. Both morphological similarity and highly variable diagnostic characters have contributed to confusion over species-level diversity. Additionally, the placement of the genus among genera in the subfamily Colubrinae remains uncertain, although previous studies have supported a close relationship with the genus Dinodon. In this study, we provide the first estimate of phylogenetic relationships within the genus Lycodon using a new multi- locus data set. We provide statistical tests of monophyly based on biogeographic, morpho- logical and taxonomic hypotheses. With few exceptions, we are able to reject many of these hypotheses, indicating a need for taxonomic revisions and a reconsideration of the group's biogeography. Mapping of color patterns on our preferred phylogenetic tree suggests that banded and blotched types have evolved on multiple occasions in the history of the genus, whereas the solid-color (and possibly speckled) morphotype color patterns evolved only once. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of the agamid genus Japalura is described, based on three specimens from Mizoram, northeast India. Japalura otai sp. nov. is most similar to J. planidorsata and J. sagittifera and can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of characters: adult size (SVL male 46.4 mm, female 52.2–58.7 mm), tail length/SVL ratio 160.5–187.5%, 10–11 supralabials, 9–12 infralabials, 45–47 middorsal scales, 17–20 lamellae under finger IV, 20–22 lamellae under toe IV, tympanum concealed, axillary fold present, nuchal crest, gular fold and gular pouch absent, enlarged keeled dorsal scales present, body shape subquadrangular in cross section. Japalura sagittifera is here redescribed, a lectotype and a paralectotype designated and photographs of the type specimens made available for the first time. All known localities for these three species are provided. The status of the genus Oriotiaris which was recently revalidated is discussed in detail and again synonymized within Japalura. The currently recognised polyphyletic Japalura is discussed in relation to morphological characteristics.
