Mr. Miles Beacom Chief Executive Officer PREMIER Bankcard, LLC Commencement Speaker

Dakota State University alumnus Miles K. Beacom has said that DSU has an extremely special place in his heart. This is certainly evident from his actions over the last four decades.

Miles exemplifies what it means to be a True Trojan. During his time at DSU, and after he graduated with a business degree in 1981, he has been dedicated, determined, disciplined, driven, and distinctive. These characteristics have helped him rise to the top of his career.

He has served as Chief Executive Officer of PREMIER Bankcard since 1993. Under his leadership, PREMIER Bankcard has gone from serving 30,000 cardholders to more than 3.7 million customers nationwide. PREMIER is currently the 13th largest issuer of credit cards in the country and employs approximately 1,700 employees in four locations across South Dakota. Miles also serves in a variety of management positions with other financial institutions, and is a member of several boards, including the Sioux Empire United Way, the Catholic Diocese for Eastern South Dakota, and the Dakota State University Foundation.

Community involvement and giving back to his profession have always been priorities for Beacom, and his philanthropy is far-reaching. Because of Dakota State’s special place in his heart, Miles has never forgotten his alma mater.

In 2014, he and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford gave the largest donation to date for the first new building on campus in 30 years, the Beacom Institute of Technology. In 2017, Miles and his wife Lisa and Mr. Sanford continued their philanthropy with a $30 million Rising Gift to DSU. This has been used for student scholarships, new faculty and staff positions, and a second new building on campus, The Madison CyberLabs (MadLabs). The computer college also bears his name, The Beacom College of Computer and Cyber Sciences.

Upon his 2013 induction into the South Dakota Hall of Fame, Miles humbly responded that any success he has had is a result of surrounding himself with great people, from family, to co-workers, to friends.

Miles and his wife have three daughters and one son. Dakota State University Academic Year 2020-2021

Thomas E. Orton Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Tom Orton, who graduated with a business education degree from General Beadle State College in 1969. His advice to graduates is to be to “be prepared.”

Orton was prepared for a diverse career that has included a broad variety of managerial, consulting, and teaching experience in many industries. He was founder or co-founder of several companies, including Synetics Corporation (providing engineering and management services to the utility industry), a toy/game industry company that manufactured baseball board games, United Energy Services, and Scientific Technology Inc. (providing consulting and recruiting activities for the utility, computer, and aerospace industries). He also taught business related courses to first- and second-year students at a junior college in , Mass., in conjunction with his studies for his graduate degree at Suffolk University.

Orton is currently a semi-retired consultant and an investor/owner of farmland in Stanley and Jerauld Counties in South Dakota, presently serving on the Board of Directors and advisor to Outsource Management, Inc. He was a founding member of this twenty-year-old company, which was established as a go-to resource for emerging mid-size companies that embrace marketing automation, CRM, and sales enablement platforms to grow and dominate their niche. THE TRADITION OF THE ALMA MATER

The tradition of singing of the Alma Mater at graduations, convocations and other Dakota State University events began in 1922, then Eastern State Normal School, when student assemblies were formal and called chapels. At that time, a faculty member, Miss Helen Cavant, and public school instructor, Miss Evelyn Goodsell wrote the words. Through the years the song has undergone some minor changes in wording and music, but the foundation has remained the same. Dakota State University is deeply rooted in the eastern plains of South Dakota with her alumni branching far and wide throughout the world. This year, Dakota State University proudly celebrates its 140th birthday. We are rising to the future and honoring our past in a variety of ways.

The cover of this year’s commencement program is a throwback to 1900. This design matches the program from Madison State Normal and Training School’s 16th Annual Commencement Ceremony. That event was held on June 13 at the Opera House in Madison.
