La Universidad Autónoma de Madrid tiene un alto reconocimiento de sus actividades investigadoras tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, habiendo sido declarada Campus de Excelencia Internacional en 2010 (http://campusexcelenciauam.es/). Esta situación de protagonismo es el fruto del compromiso con la investigación de calidad y el liderazgo en muchas líneas estratégicas contempladas en los planes de investigación, desarrollo e innovación. Tal como pone de manifiesto esta memoria, el Departamento de Análisis Económico: Teoría Económica e Historia Económica, ha conseguido contribuir, de forma efectiva, a este objetivo común, mostrando los esfuerzos notables que se han realizado en todas las dimensiones de la actividad investigadora: proyectos y contratos, publicaciones, tesis, participación y organización de congresos, etc. Frente a la situación reflejada en la anterior memoria correspondiente a 2005-06, la posición relativa del Departamento en los rankings disponibles ha mejorado de forma notable, particularmente en lo referente al número de publicaciones1. Este resultado muestra la presencia creciente que tiene el Departamento en el sistema de I+D+i nacional y regional, avalada por los numerosos proyectos del Plan Nacional concedidos, y el impulso que nos han proporcionado los proyectos del Plan Regional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (PRICIT) en lo relativo a la creación y consolidación de grupos emergentes. Si en la anterior memoria se establecía esto como una oportunidad a aprovechar, los resultados obtenidos no pueden sino ser alentadores. El siguiente paso, sin duda ambicioso, deberá ser la consecución de proyectos de carácter europeo dentro del 7º programa marco (http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp7/), estableciendo las redes de contacto internacionales que permitan alcanzar este objetivo. Más a largo plazo se debería aspirar a los contratos de la European Science Foundation (http://www.esf.org). La presente memoria, correspondiente a los años 2009 y 2010, confirma el relativo éxito de las distintas acciones que, desde hace ya algunos años, se han venido desarrollando en el Departamento al objeto de impulsar la investigación. Las más notables se reflejan en cuatro iniciativas: 1) la adopción de una política de profesorado consistente, que prima entre los criterios de selección la proyección y potencial investigador de los profesores, y que se ha traducido en la ampliación y renovación de la plantilla, con la incorporación de jóvenes doctores seleccionados en el contexto del mercado de trabajo organizado por la Asociación Europea de Economía (https://www.econjobmarket.org/). Los criterios establecen unos requisitos mínimos que avalan al nuevo profesorado y que se resumen en la 1 Así, por ejemplo, y pese a la parcialidad en la información (RePec) sobre la que se basa el ranking elaborado por IDEAS, el Departamento (http://edirc.repec.org/data/dauames.html) se encuentra ya en el primer quintil de las instituciones españolas (http://ideas.repec.org/top/top.spain.html). 3 existencia de redes de contactos propias gracias a estancias en el extranjero, dominio de otros idiomas, y una actitud participativa para concurrir a proyectos y contratos de investigación, 2) la puesta en marcha de un sistema de ayudas económicas como incentivo a la investigación, y que ha movilizado a lo largo de los dos años considerados en torno a los 6.000€, 3) la implementación de una dotación adicional de fondos para la consolidación de seminarios permanentes de investigación, jornadas y eventos y, finalmente, 4) la ampliación de la infraestructura para realizar las tareas de investigación. En relación con la incorporación de nuevos profesores, si bien el proceso de contratación implantado en el Departamento es costoso y complejo, pues exige la búsqueda de los candidatos, el análisis de sus currículos, la realización de entrevistas personales, la gestión de seminarios, y su propia adaptación a las características propias del Departamento, ha resultado muy positivo, dado que ha permitido reforzar las líneas estratégicas de investigación al tener abierto un amplio abanico de candidatos, vitalizar la actividad académica, y fomentar la colaboración y el trabajo en grupo de todo el PDI. Las recientes incorporaciones de nuevos profesores titulares al Departamento y las acreditaciones positivas que la ANECA ha concedido a varios miembros del mismo, muestran el camino a seguir, y la necesidad de seguir perseverando en esta línea tan exigente, con el propósito de aumentar la capacitación y el logro de personal cualificado. Esta cualificación concierne no solo al PDI permanente, sino también al visitante, siendo deseable acudir a las convocatorias competitivas europeas y nacionales con el propósito atraer talento mediante los programas de movilidad nacionales y europeos (p.e. convocatoria de movilidad del MICINN, programa Erasmus para movilidad del PDI, etc.). Respecto a las ayudas de investigación, las líneas financiadas son diversas, si bien la asistencia a congresos, los cursos de formación, y la publicación de documentos de trabajo (http://ideas.repec.org/s/uam/wpaper.html y http://ideas.repec.org/s/uam/wpapeh.html), son las que más esfuerzos económicos y de gestión exigen. Estas ayudas son esenciales para todo el profesorado, pero en particular para aquellos jóvenes que se encuentran en la fase inicial de su carrera académica, y los cuales no tienen acceso a proyectos o contratos de investigación, ni otras ayudas complementarias que faciliten su movilidad, Asimismo, la organización de seminarios de investigación requiere de un esfuerzo económico y humano que es necesario realizar para favorecer la difusión de ideas, proyectos e iniciativas tanto de los profesores recién incorporados como de los ya consolidados en el Departamento. Estos seminarios son, además, una vía para establecer y consolidar las relaciones con otros centros afines. Por otra parte, el Departamento sigue mejorando sus infraestructuras propias, aunque la escasez de espacios sigue siendo todavía un problema. Así, por ejemplo, se ha habilitado un laboratorio de informática propio para el Posgrado, habiéndose adquirido licencias de diversos programas como STATA. 4 La presente memoria, relativa a los años 2009 y 2010, es el fruto del esfuerzo investigador de todo el PDI del Departamento. Las iniciativas, constancia y trabajo de los profesores que lo forman, se han traducido en el conjunto de proyectos, publicaciones, dirección de tesis doctorales, organización y asistencia a congresos, estancias en el extranjero etc., que se detallan a continuación, y que ponen de manifiesto el compromiso del Departamento de apoyar y consolidar las tareas de investigación que se realizan en su seno. El firme propósito de consolidación de la investigación como faceta fundamental de la actividad académica es condición sine qua non para concebir una docencia de calidad. Investigación y docencia de alto nivel se articulan, simultánea y paralelamente, como signo distintivo del Departamento, así como punto de encuentro en el que todo el personal docente e investigador pueda ver reflejadas sus legítimas aspiraciones. 5 1) Proyectos y contratos de investigación. 1.1) Proyectos de investigación competitivos. 1.1.1) Dirigidos por PDI del Departamento. - Internacionales. 1. KEHOE PER JORDI CABALLÉ Academic life tends to combine long periods of monotony, in which quiet but constant work is the rule, with isolated moments to celebrate your own or other people’s success as a result of that work. Today is one of those infrequent and, therefore, especially joyful times when we come together in celebration to honour one of the most prestigious members of our profession of academic economists. This is also an especially happy moment for me, as my friend Tim Kehoe has been a benchmark throughout my professional life. I will begin by highlighting some of the biographic aspects and abundant merits of Dr. Tim Kehoe. He is currently Professor of Eco- nomics at the University of Minnesota and Adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He obtained his PhD from Yale Uni- versity in 1979, under the supervision of Professor Herbert Scarf and the co-supervision of Professor Andreu Mas-Colell. Since obtaining the PhD, he has lectured at the Wesleyan University, at the MIT, at the University of Cambridge and, since 1987, he has been a Pro- fessor at the University of Minnesota. Over this period, he has su- pervised 74 PhD theses. It should be stressed here that he is ranked 29th in the RePEC ranking of all academic economists worldwide as regards the subsequent research quality of his students.

It deals with new developments in applied general equilibrium, a field that has broadened greatly since the 1980s. The contributors discuss some traditional as well as some newer topics in the field, including nonconvexities in economy-wide models, tax policy, developmental modeling, and energy modeling. The book also covers a range of new approaches, conceptual issues, and computational algorithms, such as calibration, and new areas of application, such as the macroeconomics of real business cycles and finance. An introductory chapter written by the editors maps out issues and scenarios for the future evolution of applied general equilibrium. Timothy J. Kehoe is Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota and an advisor to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He has previ- ously taught at Wesleyan University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Cambridge. He has advised foreign firms and governments on the impact of their economic decisions. He is co-editor of Modeling North American Economic Integration, which examines the use of applied general equilibrium models to analyze the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement. His current research focuses on the theory and application of general equilibrium models.

    When Physics Became Undisciplined: An Essay on Econophysics Dr. Christophe Claude Schinckus August 2018 Department of History and Philosophy of Science Girton College, University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History and Philosophy of Science When Physics Became Undisciplined An Essay on Econophysics Dr. Christophe Schinckus Abstract In the 1990s, physicists started looking beyond their disciplinary boundaries by using their methods to study various problems usually thrown up by financial economics. This dissertation deals with this extension of physics outside its disciplinary borders. It seeks to determine what sort of discipline econophysics is in relation to physics and to economics, how its emergence was made possible, and what sort of knowledge it produces. Using a variety of evidence including bibliometric analysis Chapter 1 explores the field’s disciplinary identity as a branch of physics even though its intellectual heart is better seen as the re-emergence of a 1960s research programme initiated in economics. Chapter 2 is historical: it identifies the key role played by the Santa Fe Institute and its pioneering complexity research in the shaping of methodological horizons of econophysics. These are in turn investigated in Chapter 3, which argues that there are in fact three methodological strands: statistical econophysics, bottom-up agent-based econophysics, and top-down agent-based econophysics. Viewed from a Lakatosian perspective they all share a conceptual hard-core but articulate the protective belt in distinctly different ways. The last and final chapter is devoted to the way econophysicists produce and justify their knowledge. It shows that econophysics operates by proposing empirically adequate analogies between physical and other systems in exactly the ways emphasised by Pierre Duhem.

    Laudatio to Timothy J. Kehoe by Jordi Caballé Academic life tends to combine long periods of monotony, in which quiet but constant work is the rule, with isolated moments to celebrate your own or other people’s success as a result of that work. Today is one of those infrequent and, therefore, especially joyful times when we come together in celebration to honour one of the most prestigious members of our profession of academic economists. This is also an especially happy moment for me, as my friend Tim Kehoe has been a benchmark throughout my professional life. I will begin by highlighting some of the biographic aspects and abundant merits of Dr. Tim Kehoe. He is currently Professor of Economics at the University of Minnesota and Adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He obtained his PhD from Yale University in 1979, under the supervision of Professor Herbert Scarf and the co-supervision of Professor Andreu Mas-Colell. Since obtaining the PhD, he has lectured at the Wesleyan University, at the MIT, at the University of Cambridge and, since 1987, he has been a Professor at the University of Minnesota. Over this period, he has supervised 74 PhD theses. It should be stressed here that he is ranked 29th in the RePEC ranking of all academic economists worldwide as regards the subsequent research quality of his students. This proves that Tim Kehoe, through his excellent teaching and supervision, has planted the seeds of the abundant scientific production conducted by several generations of economists. Some of the numerous articles that he has written have been published in the most prestigious journals in Economics (such as the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economic Studies, the Quarterly Journal of Economics and Econometrica).

The Society of Bolivian Economists (SEBOL), the Institute for Advanced Development Studies (INESAD) and the Private University of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (UPSA) are delighted to host the LACEA Annual Meeting and to have participants from all over the world in this outstanding meeting. This year we have a very exciting program. More than 300 contributed papers are distributed over 100 sessions covering all areas of economics. Our special thanks to the Scientific Committee, who kindly evaluated almost 800 submissions in a timely manner. In addition, 30 invited sessions will be presented by some of the most important academics and policy makers in economics.
