Shakatak scored a number of chart entries, including two Top Ten hits in the UK Singles Chart, "Night Birds" (1982) and "Down on the Street" (1984), plus a further 12 entries in the Guinness book of British Hit Singles. The group are still active and popular throughout the world, particularly in Japan and the Far East, and generally produce a new album every two years on JVC Records. From their first release in August 1980, (the Bill Sharpe composition "Steppin'" on the Polydor record label), and their first album, Drivin' Hard, the band's singles and albums have entered the charts regularly. It was the release of "Easier Said Than Done" that gave the band the radio exposure needed for their first top-twenty hit. This record introduced their instrumental-unison vocal sound to a much wider audience, and the track stayed in the UK chart for seventeen weeks. The follow-up, "Night Birds", was their first single to reach the top ten, and the album of the same name gave Shakatak their first gold album, entering at number four and remaining in the charts for twenty-eight weeks. -
Measuring the Evolution of Timbre in Billboard Hot 100
Measuring the Evolution of Timbre in Billboard Hot 100 Degree's Thesis Audiovisual Systems Engineering Author: Aleu Pons Alb`a Advisors: Jordi Pons Puig and Antonio Bonafonte C´avez Universitat Polit`ecnicade Catalunya (UPC) 2016 - 2017 Abstract This project consists in analyzing the timbre blend of some representative most popular songs along last 60 years: Billboard Hot 100's first positions of all weeks of the analysed years. The study focus the attention in those years that made a revolutionary change in Western popular music, according to musicological bibliography. After studying musical timbre and its state of the art in order to define the methodology, the data-set is defined, obtained and perceptually analysed and classified. Then a two-parts system is developed. First part consist in timbre characterization using MFCCs (Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients), ZCC (zero-crossing count) and brightness mu- sical descriptor. And second part is the automatic classification of all data-set using trained and validated SVM (support vector machine) models. Finally, obtained results show an approximation of mainstream music timbre evolution. Despite of their questionable validity and the risks of falling into false attributions or gener- alizations, final conclusions point -with regard to Billboard Hot 100- to the non-influence of punk, an increase of high load of low frequencies and electronic sounds along time, and the influence of hip hop and trap. -

Sign on the Dotted Line the Music It Could Happen to Industry Is Fraught You! With, Well
Return to Company News The 4th Annual Business & Independent Music Legal: Awards Winners Announced! Sign on Technology: the P2P: Boon or Bogeyman? Dotted Business & Legal: Line Sign on the Dotted Line The music It Could Happen To industry is fraught You! with, well... let’s just call them honest misunderstandings. If it’s not a club owner who "forgets" to pay the headliner the agreed-upon amount, then it’s a headliner who "forgets" to show up on time. If it’s not a manager who somehow pockets 15% of the gross rather than the 10% he told the band he would collect, it’s the band who fires the manager who helped establish them as soon as they think they no longer need him. And how about the booking agent who sweats and toils for months to get an act into the best clubs only to lose that artist to a larger firm as soon as the artist "makes it" in the circuit? Conversely, plenty of booking agents (and radio promoters, etc) make a lot of promises and fail to deliver on them. Then there’s the whole world of music licensing, merchandizing and even product endorsements and sponsorships. Did I mention intellectual property? All of these areas are usually complicated and involve many players and details. Disagreements over terms aren’t always misunderstandings, per se, but they are almost always contentious and drawn out. Yes, it would be nice if we could all just shake hands and fulfill our obligations in line with one another’s’ expectations. But like it or not, this is a business.
