We have all got a song to sing and music to play. In December we added some spice to our meeting and invited Yazi Begh Ali to Recently Malhamdale Local History Group was fortunate to receive the donation of an talk to us about her education and charity work promoting cultural connections item that we had never seen before but of which there must have been many in the through food. Yazi who was born and brought up in Skipton talked about her Dale a third of a century ago. This was a first day cover franked on 26rd January 1983 childhood growing up with her family who had arrived in the country from and commemorating 150 years of the Methodist Church in Airton. Stamped on Pakistan to work in the weaving industry. From an early age, Yazi valued how fresh food and vegetables were an important enabler in connecting people; her father had an allotment and shared some of his produce with friends from the allotment and also neighbours on the street where they lived. As they were the only local Asian heritage family, food quickly became the link to develop an understanding and friendships across communities. As Yazi talked, she prepared a spicy fish curry and the listeners completely understood how the wonderful colours and aroma emanating from her pans would induce curiosity and excitement. A member of the audience was even encouraged to do the ‘chapatti dance’ as she tried her hand at making chapattis! Through a challenging personal period Yazi has developed her own unique approach to working with different groups, including cooking with secondary school pupils, contributing to Madhur Jaffrey’s Cookbook and attending a UN conference promoting food as a cultural connector. Everyone in the audience thoroughly enjoyed Yazi’s thought provoking presentation, not to mention the fish curry afterwards! Also in December we observed a one minute silence for Mary Cribb our dear Inside the envelope was a card with details of the history of the Methodist friend and WI member who sadly passed away.
