KCS Connections Kincaid Central School “A Great Place to Grow” Box 90, #10 North Avenue (306)-264-3933 Kincaid, SK S0H 2J0 [email protected] Principal’s Message – Mr. Shane Onraet January 29 th , 2013

The first half of the school year will wrap up today with semester two classes getting underway tomorrow, January 30 th , two days ahead of schedule. Semester one exams will be completed by noon today freeing up time in the schedule allowing us to get a jump start on the new semester courses. This will give teachers and students an opportunity to move ahead in their course work and allow for some flexibility when we approach second semester exams in June. Report cards will be coming home early next week for students in grades 10-12 . Parents of grade 9 students should be on the lookout for a progress report at this time but not a formal report card. All other grades should not expect a report card at this time as we have a three term report card for grades K-9. Grades K-9 students will receive their report cards at the end of term two in mid-March. In the meantime if you would like to discuss your child’s progress please feel free to connect with teachers here at school. You may have heard in the news recently reference to some changes in the Education Act. Our Prairie South Schools (PSS) Division Board is reviewing these new regulations and will determine how they will affect our school division. The PSS calendar committee will be meeting in February to develop proposals for the 2013-2014 school year calendars that will be used in our division. When further information becomes available specifics will be communicated to our school communities. As we contemplate the review I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and community members that my door is always open if there is an issue that needs to be addressed or a celebration that has been overlooked. Open communication and problem solving fosters a better relationship where ideas, issues, celebrations, and concerns can be shared and addressed in a positive, open manner.

This past week has been a busy one at KCS with the implementation of our new phone system (VOIP). For how the new system affects our parents and callers, please read Mrs. Creasy’s article in this issues of KCS Connections . As we move through the final days of January and into February it is a good time to remind students that voting for this years Willow books will take place toward the end of February . Our school has been a supporter of The Saskatchewan Young Readers' Choice - The Willow Awards - since its inception in 2001. It is a great way to encourage young readers and at the same time support our School Learning Improvement Plan which has goals associated with improved reading skills. You might want to explore this years Willows by going to the Willow Awards website (www.willowawards.ca ). This would be an excellent way to support your child’s reading goals as you have a conversation about some of the books they are enjoying. South Central District Curling will get underway this weekend with our bantam mixed team in Glentworth for their SW Section Playoffs . The senior team will advance directly to Districts next week in Moose Jaw. District competition will take place February 8 & 9 for bantams in Lafleche and seniors in Moose Jaw . All the best to Mrs. Sandra Senicar and our KCS athletes ! Thank you to the Lafleche curling club for finding time for our athletes to practice this year. It is a short season and we appreciate their contribution to our school extra-curricular program. Best of luck to our KCS Drama Club as they prepare for their annual drama performance. Thank you to Mrs. Kelly Reid-Ward and Mme Edna Lacasse-Corcoran for taking on the roles of director for this year’s production. Be sure to mark your calendars for Monday, March 4 and come out to enjoy the talents of our KCS Drama Club! Our Community Birthday Calendars have arrived in plenty of time for the starting month of March 2013. Your calendar was sent home last week with your youngest student. If yours did not arrive or you do not have a student in the school your calendar will be available at our local Canada Post outlets over the next few weeks. Thank you to local businesses, organizations, and families for supporting this community centred project. Proceeds go toward school- based SRC activities. It is that time of year when the new phone books are distributed. Our school is once again encouraging the recycling of old phone books. If you would like to send in your old books we have a collection box near the library at the school. Mrs. Barb Hunter will also be helping us with a collection box at the Kincaid Village Office. Thank you, Barb, for your helpful suggestion and smiling cooperation. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this project. It is good for our environment and helps our school raise a bit of funds through SaskTel.
