NORTH SHORE EVANSTON HOSPITAL Evanston, IL PROGRAMS OFFERED NorthShore Evanston Hospital, a teaching affiliate of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, offers fully accredited training in anatomic and clinical pathology for 12 residents as University of Chicago (NorthShore) Pathology (ACGME ID 300-16-21-412). The residency emphasizes thorough and balanced training in anatomic and clinical pathology. Trainees have opportunities and financial support for translational research and presentations at national meetings. Electives at the University of Chicago and other institutions are available. Residents also participate in a variety of professional activities in Chicago, such as meetings of local and national medical societies and symposia in the medical schools. All residents rotate at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago for pediatric pathology and the Office of the Medical Examiner of Cook County in Chicago for forensic pathology. REQUIREMENTS Applicants must be graduates of approved allopathic or osteopathic medical schools with minimum USMLE scores of 215 and COMLEX scores of 450 or above for Steps I and II, passing on the first attempt. Graduates of foreign medical schools must have a valid ECFMG certificate and be eligible for a J1 or H1-B visa. TYPES AND NUMBERS OF APPOINTMENTS We offer 12 accredited residency positions. Trainees generally choose a combined AP/CP experience. Fellowships in Medical Microbiology, Molecular Genetic Pathology, and Surgical Pathology are also offered. FACILITIES Headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) is a fully integrated healthcare delivery system serving the Chicagoland area. The system includes four hospitals: Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Highland Park Hospital in Highland Park, and Skokie Hospital in Skokie, Illinois. The hospitals have a combined total of 789 licensed beds. The labs provide regional outpatient and outreach services. NorthShore Evanston Hospital, where the residency program is based, is a comprehensive acute care facility, a licensed Level I Trauma Center, and a leader in cardiac care, cancer care, personalized medicine, and a variety of surgical specialties (neurosurgery, gynecologic surgery, robot-assisted surgery, surgical oncology and urology surgery). Certified by the Joint Commission in palliative care and as a primary stroke center, Evanston Hospital also houses the NorthShore Center for Simulation and Innovation which provides clinical staff and trainees with simulated clinical care experiences. The Women's Hospital, located on the Evanston campus, is a regional center for high-risk obstetrics. NorthShore has a large medical genetics program and is known for its expertise in personalized medicine. As the principal teaching affiliate for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, NorthShore is dedicated to excellence in medical education and research. NorthShore also has an established reputation for advanced information technology and a strong clinical environment. More than 200 students, residents and fellows from both NorthShore-based programs (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Pathology) and the University of Chicago (Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics and Psychiatry) are on NorthShore campuses each day. Fellowship opportunities include Surgical Pathology, Medical Microbiology and Molecular Genetic Pathology. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is located on a single floor at Evanston Hospital, with renovation of the entire facility completed in 2017, including the installation of the Kiestra™ Microbiology Total Lab Automation System. Over 63,000 surgical cases, including 22,000 outreach specimens, 48,000 cytology specimens including FNA, and 160 autopsies were performed in 2017. The clinical laboratories perform more than 4.5 million examinations in the various divisions and outreach program. COMMUNITY Evanston, a quaint residential community of approximately 75,000, home to Northwestern University, is immediately north of Chicago along Lake Michigan. Evanston offers a wealth of cultural opportunities and is easily accessible to downtown Chicago. Convenient and timely public transportation runs on frequent schedules between Chicago and the outlying areas. Evanston boasts a top-rated education system (District 65). For younger children, day care facilities are conveniently located across the street from Evanston Hospital. STIPENDS AND MAINTENANCE First-year trainees receive an annual salary of $57,732 (2018-2019) with graduated increases up to $65,443 at the fourth-year level. Benefits are competitive.
