CHAPTER NINE Admiral Antonio Barceló, 1716–97: A Self-Made Naval Leader Agustín Ramón Rodríguez González Real Academia de la Historia, Madrid The career of Antonio Barceló y Pont de la Terra has on many occasions attracted the attention of researchers and publishers of naval history. He was a modest mail-boat skipper, who, despite not being a nobleman and having very little academic training, managed to obtain the title of Admiral (Teniente Gen- eral de la Armada) at a time when such an achievement was nigh on impos- sible. It was solely due to his merits in action during times of war and other outstanding services.199 Much less attention has been paid to the perhaps inevitable fact, given his character and career, that despite being an outstanding leader in the Spanish Royal Navy at that time, prejudices of all kinds, professional envy and the iner- tia of the ‘establishment’ ensured that a large part of his efforts did not receive their due reward and his ideas were not applied, or at least not to the desired extent. Perhaps one of the subtlest attacks on his career and legacy has been to trivi- alise his actions, presenting them as typical of a hard, skilled ‘corsair’, within a very limited operational context, based on anecdotal evidence. Uwagi ogólne Zestaw materiałów opatrzony wspólnym tytułem The most famous battles in Bri- tish history jest adresowany do studentów uzupełniających studiów magisterskich na kierunkach humanistycznych. Przedstawione ćwiczenia mogą być wykorzysta- ne do pracy z grupami studentów filologii, kulturoznawstwa, historii i innych po- krewnych kierunków. 2. Poziom zaawansowania: B2+/C1 3. Czas trwania opisanych ćwiczeń Ćwiczenia zaprezentowane w tym artykule są przeznaczone na jedną jednostkę lekcyjną lub dwa zajęcia 90 minut każde. Czas trwania został ustalony na podsta- wie doświadczenia wynikającego z pracy nad poniższymi ćwiczeniami w grupach na poziomie B2+. 4. Cele dydaktyczne W swoim założeniu zajęcia mają rozwijać podstawowe umiejętności językowe, takie jak czytanie, mówienie, słuchanie oraz pisanie. CHAPTER I THE FORMATIVE YEARS In 1754, David Hume began the publication of his Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects in London; Linnaeus published his Genera Plantarum in Stockholm; and in Paris Condillac’s Traité des sensations and Diderot’s Interprétation de la nature came off the presses. Also, in Russia, the first bank was founded; in Haarlem, the Literary Society was established; and, in Spain, Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa became members of the Chamber of Commerce. In short, although alternating between periods of slow and of feverish creative activity, the intellectual climate throughout Europe was maturing rapidly in preparation for the coming golden age, an era whose spirit was to be found in the plans, projects, and legislative proceedings of its statesmen over the next twenty years. However, at mid-century there were still some regions that remained impervious to this intellectual ferment. They were unaware of the philosophical, scientific and economic debate that was taking place in the major capitals, and unaware too of the emerging nucleus of the bourgeoisie that would soon demand, and by the end of the century realize, the fulfilment of its role in history. In Italy, Lunigiana was one of these stagnant regions. This territory, which extends from the narrow valley of the Magra River to the peaks of the mountains that surround it on all sides, was fragmented into some fifteen miniscule fiefdoms, each of which was governed by one of the marquises of the Malaspina family, who were direct vassals of the Austrian emperor. These territories were surrounded by the Republic of Genoa, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, and the Duchy of Parma. -

Prof. Kahraman Şakul January 2015, 118 pages The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between Spain and the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century, based on the diary of the first Spanish ambassador, Juan de Bouligny. He was appointed by the Spanish court to negotiate Peace and Trade Agreements and he stayed for nearly three years (May, 1779–September 1782) in Constantinople. This fully comprehensive diary allows us to see the agreement process through the lens of Spanish plenipotentiary. The questions this study addresses are: (1) in which conjuncture was the agreement signed between these two great powers, (2) what was the function of this agreement, (3) which procedures were conducted throughout the agreement process, and (4) which networks and operations of the Spanish plenipotentiary took place in Constantinople. With the endeavours of diligent plenipotentiary, the agreement process reached a conclusion, however; the newly changed conjuncture did not allow it to be practiced. -

The Optimist and the Pessimist: Louis-René de Latouche- Tréville (1745–1804) and Pierre Charles de Villeneuve (1763–1806) Rémi Monaque Marine française The Revolution of 1789 brought about a profound and lasting disorganisation of the French navy. Its officer corps, mostly consisting of nobles, was forced to take part in a massive emigration. Some of them, due to family traditions, considered their fidelity to the King more important than their fidelity to the Nation, but many, although open to new ideas, left the country just to save their lives. The awful atmosphere that existed on board ships made it impossible for them to exercise authority over their crews who had lost all confidence in the ‘aristocrats’ whom they suspected of betrayal. Some rare noble officers man- aged to stay in service for a while. However, by November 1793 they were all dismissed. chapter 6 Problems in Applying the Treaties: Ambassadors and Envoys After the treaties initiated a period of peaceful relations and newly strengthened bilateral agreements, commercial exchanges increased and larger numbers of Muslims began to arrive in the Iberian Peninsula. As we shall see in the following chapters, ambassadors, special envoys, ships’ captains, sailors, merchants, exiles, travelers, converts, and adventurers visited Spanish territory, sometimes remain- ing for long periods and even dying there. We shall speak first of the ambassadors, envoys, and ships’ captains (arrae- ces).1 Spanish authorities actually created every possible delay and obstacle to their attempts to reach the monarchy’s domains. The Secretariat of State sent a stream of instructions along those lines to its various consuls general who served in the Maghreb. There were two principal reasons for this policy. The first was to avoid unpleasant incidents during the ambassadors’ sojourns in Spain: it was essential to preserve Hispano- Muslim understanding in general and Hispano- Moroccan amity in particular. The second was the heavy drain that the embassies made on the royal treasury,2 making it desirable to reduce their visits to the Spanish court to a minimum.3 Likewise the authorities strove 1 I include the arraeces who headed embassies and came as delegates from the sultan and his circle.
