The Descendants of Darby Shawhan (1748-1824) by Ronald T. Shawhan

DARBY SHAWHAN, the Warren County, Ohio pioneer, traced his lineage back to his grandfather, DARBY SHAWHAN a Scotch-Irish immigrant who arrived in Kent County, Maryland in about 1698 — he may have come by way of Barbados. We know that he was an illiterate but industrious farmer, growing tobacco, on land known as “Darby’s Desire”, which was/is located a short distance northwest of the city of Kennedyville, in Kent County, MD; he and his wife, Sarah Meeks, lie buried on these grounds. Darby and Sarah were married in the still existing St. Paul’s Church, on November 20, 1707 — that union produced eight children, including Daniel (1709-177?), the direct ancestor and father of Darby, born 1748.

DANIEL SHAWHAN was a farmer and a tanner — i.e. one skilled in such leatherwork as shoe-making. He married Jennet (last name unknown) and had several children, including Daniel (1738-1791). Daniel, b. 1709, migrated from Kent County to Frederick County, MD in about 1740, and subsequently to Hampshire County, VA/WV in about 1759. Along the way he fought in the militia during the French and Indian War and provided ferry service to the defeated troops of General Braddock as they returned to Maryland, bloodied from the mauling they received at the hands of the French and their Indian allies when the British tried to capture Ft. Duquesne (Pittsburgh); Braddock himself had been killed during the action and the surviving troops were saved from total destruction primarily through the efforts of Colonel George Washington. Daniel and his wife, Jennet, had several children, including Darby, born in 1748 in Frederick County, Maryland.

A detailed summation of Darby and his descendants follows.

First Generation

1. Darby SHAWHAN,1 son of Daniel SHAWHAN and Jennett, was born in Frederick Co., MD 1748. Darby died January 21, 1824 in Warren Co., OH, at 75 years of age. He married Priscilla (UNKNOWN) Shawhan in Washington Co., PA, about 1779. Priscilla was born in PA 1764. Priscilla died April 09, 1837 in Warren County, OH, at 72 years of age. Her body was interred April 1837 in Near Zoar, Warren County, OH. Darby accompanied his parents on their migration west to Hampshire Co., VA/WV in about 1758. He is mentioned in that county’s records, on November 13, 1770, as “Darby Shaughan”, when he received a land deed from his father, Daniel. In the mid 1770s he traveled west to Washington Co., PA, in the Redstone District, near the Monongahela River. There he married Priscilla and started his family, Daniel being his first child, in 1779. He is listed in the Penn. Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. IV, as being a Private in Stockley’s Rangers, during the period 1778-1783, also as a member of the Washington Co. Militia, under Ensign David Rubles, Lt. Jonathan Harned’s Company. In 1781 he was taxed for 80 acres, three horses, and five cattle; the PA 1790 census shows him as still being in Washington Co.; records also indicate his sale, on October 14, 1791, of 126 acres, in East Bethlehem Twp, Washington Co., to Peter Snyder. Shortly thereafter, he followed his older brother,Daniel, then deceased, to western Virginia, Kentucky District, near Ruddles Mills, in the Bourbon County locale; his son Joseph was born in that area in 1795. Shortly thereafter, he traveled north, across the Ohio River, to what would became Warren County, Ohio, east of the Little Miami River — probably in company with the Mounts family, also one of the prominent pioneers in that county; Darby’s last son, Amos, was born there in 1799. This land was in the middle of the Virginia Military District, formed for the benefit of Revolutionary War veterans — Darby may have benefited accordingly. Warren County was formed in 1803, out of Hamilton County, being named after the patriot who sent Paul Revere on his ride, and who subsequently died at the Battle of Bunker Hill. A Warren Co. deeds entry, dated Oct. 16, 1804, lists Darby purchasing land from Alexander Hamilton and his wife, Martha. Darby and his sons, Joseph and David, occupied land on the western edge of present day Morrow, Ohio, east of the Mounts family, overlooking the Little Miami River. The 1810 Census lists Darby and his son David in Hamilton Twp, Warren County. When Darby died, intestate, in 1824, he owned 211 acres. He and his wife were buried in the Zoar Cemetery, also known as the Baker/Ditmar Cemetery, about two miles west of Morrow, in Salem Twp, on the south side of the Cincinnati - Wilmington Highway (US RT 22/3). Darby’s Estate Record from the Warren Co., OH Probate Court, reads: “In due obeisance to the request of Priscilla Shawhan, widow and relic of Darby

Probate Court; the administrator, James Mounts, assessed her holdings, 50 acres of farm land she received on the death of David, as being worth $4000.00. Little is known of David other than that he was a small farmer. The 1860 Census lists David, a. 75, Elizabeth, a. 70, William, a. 49, Joseph, a. 40, Mary J., a. 22, David, Jr., a. 14, and Elizabeth J. a. 13. His estate settlement, initiated in 1867 and closed in 1871, showed land sales amounting to $8282.56 and debts totaling $4784.56, leaving some $3497.00 to be divided among ten heirs. James Timley; he was captured by the British and was held prisoner at Detroit until the War’s end. He was a prominent citizen of Warren Co., serving as Justice of the Peace during 1837-1846. He is also mentioned in court records, in several instances, as being designated guardian of orphaned children. There is a question as to the actual birth parents of Alexander, shown as John’s son; it is possible that Alexander was actually Polly’s son from her first marriage, or that he was an orphaned child who was adopted by John. John H. SHAWHAN and Rebecca LIGGETT had the following family: 16 i. Mary B. SHAWHAN was born 1820 and died December 19, 1881. ii. Rebecca SHAWHAN was born in Warren Co., OH November 11, 1825. Probate Court filings in July 1850 affirmed that Nancy had guardianship of the estate and minor children — e.g. Allen, Wm. Joseph was born in the Kentucky District of western Virginia, near Ruddles Station, shortly before his father Darby decided to migrate across the Ohio River to the Warren County area. Joseph was listed in the 1820 Census (PG #220) for Salem Twp., Warren Co., OH; at the time he owned land on the western edge of present-day Morrow, Ohio. Warren County Probate Court records show that his estate was administered by his son John, who held a public sale of his father’s goods in order to satisfy outstanding debts. The sale, on Sept. 12, 1836, amounting to $1515.73, included Joseph’s rifle, a “large clock”, kettles, pots, a “bureau and cover”, a two-horse wagon with harness, walnut planking, oak flooring, a cider mill, a few cows/heifers, , ten hogs, 12 shoats, oats, six horses, eight “bunches of bricks”, a field of corn, and numerous farm implements. Beers & Co., shows Amos as a tavern-keeper in Morrow, OH, “at the lower end of the Village”, near the railroad tracks in about 1852. Census records indicate that Amos and Anne also took in boarders, a common role of taverns in that era. Amos and Anne are buried in the Zoar Cemetery, just west of Morrow, together with his father Darby and her father John. Amos was somewhat of a local character in Morrow; a tintype of the era shows Amos dressed in a top hat, bow tie, and very formal clothes, holding a long rifle, and accompanied by a lounging dog. Annie was born in Warren Co., OH December 26, 1862. Annie 17 was the daughter of Enoch MAPLE and Elizabeth HATFIELD. Annie died December 7, 1956 in Loveland, OH, at 93 years of age. Her body was interred December 1956 in Lebanon, OH. Annie Cora (always called “Cora”) was born on her father’s farm, located about 1 1/ 2 miles from Ft. Ancient, in Warren County; she traced her ancestry back to Benjamin Maple, b. 1663 in Ipswich, England, who d. 1727 in New Brunswick, NJ. Related family ancestors included the Nixons, Hatfields, Todds, Ayres, Lakes, Bantas, Van Voorhees, and Vanderbilts. Her father, Enoch Harvey Maple, was a farmer who was very handy with tools — his grandchildren, decades later, still treasured the homemade wooden sleds he made for them. As a young mother, Cora was a Sunday School teacher at the Loveland Methodist Church, whose minister was Rev. Gaddis. She was a small, determined, very feminine person who ruled her home with a firm grip — both her husband and her children knew who the boss was. Her home was always dust-free spotless, featuring lace dollies, heavy walnut furni- ture, and the scent of bread baking in the iron stove. On Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other important days, she would gather her clan together for big dinners of turkey (or ham), gravy, mashed and sweet potatoes, dressing, string beans, biscuits, and other goodies — especially the pumpkin and fruit pies which always came to the table warm, together with the home-made ice cream which the youngsters had hand-churned before dinner. Her pantry was always full of home-made jellies and jars of fruit. A strong Methodist, she made sure her family attended church on a regular basis — she named her youngest son, Arthur Gaddis, in honor of Rev. Gaddis, the Loveland Methodist minister. Henry was born on the Shawhan family farm, located on Shawhan Rd., slightly northeast of Deerfield, OH (So. Leba- non), in Union Twp., Warren Co., OH. He received the name “Dilatush” in honor of the Dilatush family, prominent

--281-- landowners in the area and friends of Henry’s father, William. Henry was a fairly tall, distinguished looking, handsome gentleman, who is remembered for his courteous demeanor towards everyone. He was initially employed by the US Postal Service during the Republican presidency of Benjamin Harrison, but was put out of a job while Democrat Grover Cleveland was in office. During this time he worked at a mill on the Little Miami River, near Twightwee, a nearby community — a major product of the mill was the river ice, being cut and stored during winter, for horse-and- buggy delivery all year round. Henry returned to the Postal Service with the inauguration of the Republican William McKinley in 1897. His prime responsibility was handling the mail on the B. & O. railroad line running between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh — he frequently made the trip himself. Henry and Cora moved to their family home, on the hill, west of Loveland, in 1889; the house was then a small, five room cottage. In 1898 they expanded the home, adding rooms on both the first and second floors. Their first three children were delivered by Dr. Carmichael, a Civil War veteran, who was noted for treating his sick patients by first cleaning out their bowels with an appropriate medication. As he became more successful, including becoming a bank director in Loveland, Henry always drove a big, beautiful, black Packard automobile, with cloth seats. He and his wife are both buried in the Lebanon Cemetery. Henry Dilatush SHAWHAN and Annie Cora MAPLE had the following family: 61 i. Ralph was born in the same house in Loveland, Ohio in which he died in. After elementary school in Loveland, he had to take a train to attend high school in Madisonville, from which he graduated as class valedictorian in June 1908. He then went to the University of Cincinnati for a year. He bought his first motorcycle, a belt-driven Yale, in 1909, and rode it throughout the area, later upgrading to a 4 cylinder Pierce Arrow bike. He became good enough to enter races in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, meeting such notables as Eddy Rickenbacker, also a racer at that time. Though he had

--285-- been trained as a machine gunner in the States, Ralph served in the Army in France in WWI as a motorcycle messenger. After the War he became a motorcycle trooper, during the 1920s, in nearby Lockland, OH, but a change in administra- tion forced him out and he worked in various other positions, before becoming a draftsman with the Ford Motor Company in Hamilton, OH. He eventually became a salesman for car and other batteries, an occupation he was still pursuing when he died at the age of ninety-five, after a fall from a roof he was repairing. He enjoyed recalling the “old days”, when a good steak was 35 cents/pd, gasoline 10 cents/gal, and when he could see the Buffalo Bill Show for 25 Cents in the Cincinnati suburb of Oakley, “with a lot of whoopin’, hollerin’, and shooting — with Indians and fancy horseback riding”; his favorite cars in the past were the Huppmobiles, which could be purchased for about $800.00. Ralph Maple SHAWHAN and Minnie HILL had the following family: i. Henry Herbert SHAWHAN was born in Loveland, OH June 10, 1928. Henry is known as being one of the nicest men alive, always greeting people with a smile on his face. He never married, instead enjoyed being with his folks and helping take care of them. After his father’s death, Henry inherited the Shawhan family homestead in Loveland, Ohio and immediately set about making improvements. Henry retired from a career working for Kenner Products in Cincinnati, OH. 63. Mildred Elizabeth SHAWHAN (Henry Dilatush 42)29 was born in Loveland, OH September 17, 1893. Mildred died August 19, 1961 in Denver, CO, at 67 years of age. She married twice. She married John Shoemake MCLEAN in Loveland, OH, October 28, 1920. John was born in OH January 21, 1869. John 30 was the son of Nathaniel MCLEAN and Agnes GREEN. John died February 26, 1929 in Loveland, OH, at 60 years of age. His body was interred 1929 in Lebanon, OH, Lebanon Cemetery. John was an attorney, commonly known as “Johnny Mac”. He traced his ancestry back to Fergus McLean, b. about 1760 in Londonderry, England, who died in Warren Co., OH, after serving during the American Revolution. John was a direct descendant of Judge John McLean, 1785-1861, who served for 30 years as a Supreme Court Justice. John’s father, Nathaniel C. McLean, 1841-1899, though born in Ohio and the nephew of Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Collins McLean, Union commander of an Ohio Vol. Inf. Regt., went south across the Ohio River, during the Civil War, and joined the CSA 10th Kentucky, fighting under Gen. John Morgan until he was captured by Union forces in Tennessee. (Refer to Volume II, p. 244, for a genealogy of the McLEAN family) She married Clifford Wesley “Tacks” LATIMER in Loveland, OH, 1932. Clifford was born in Loveland, OH No- vember 30, 1877. Clifford died April 24, 1936 in Loveland, OH, at 58 years of age. Clifford “Tacks” Latimer was a former professional baseball player, as a catcher, with New York, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore in the period 1898-1902. Born and raised in Loveland, Ohio, Mildred initially found work as a bookkeeper, then found employment at Kings Powder Mill. She was a good piano player, often teaming in a duet with her brother Ralph at family gatherings. Later, as a result of the early death of her first husband, Mildred had to again find employment to support her family. Mildred Elizabeth SHAWHAN and John Shoemake MCLEAN had the following family: 94 i. John Henry MCLEAN was born July 28, 1921. 95 ii. Walter Shawhan MCLEAN was born May 22, 1924. She married Kerry DAVIS in OH, about 1962. Kerry was born about 1930. 64. Arthur Gaddis “Buck” SHAWHAN (Henry Dilatush 42)31 was born in Loveland, OH September 18, 1903. Arthur died November 10, 1961 in Cincinnati, OH, at 58 years of age. His body was interred November 1961 in Cincinnati, OH, Gate of Heaven Cem. He married Mary Irene DUBROCA in Cincinnati, OH, KY, November 30, 1929. Irene and Arthur were married at a side altar, at Old St. Mary’s Church, due to the fact that Arthur was not a Catholic, though he did agree to raise the children Catholic. Mary was born in Mobile, AL July 13, 1902. Mary 32 was the daughter of Charles Francis DUBROCA and Mary Catherine “Cadde” NICHOLAS. Mary died October 2, 1991 in Cincinnati, OH, at 89 years of age. Her body was interred 1991 in Gate of Heaven Cem., Montgomery, Ohio. Mary Irene, commonly known as “Irene”, was born in Mobile, Alabama in a little house across the street from the north corner of the Catholic Cemetery on Davis Avenue in north Mobile. The Rev. Madden, S.J., resided at her Aug. 19, 1902 baptism at St. Francis Xavier Church; godparents were Frank Hultz and Bessie Nicholas. She traced her ancestry back to the early French pioneers who joined the Dubrocas as settlers in French Louisiana in the 1700s, families such as Andry, Fievre, Nicholas, Chastang, and Alexandre. As a child she became terrified of having her head under water as a consequence of having some relatives drown in a ferry boat explosion. She was also petrified of storms, remembering having to go into the storm cellar during the hurricanes and other frightening weather which occasionally hit Mobile; as an adult, at the first sign of thunder or lightning, she would grab her rosary and head for the basement. She recalled her days as a youngster: - blackberry picking in the Catholic Cemetery for “Caddie’s” delicious pies, accompanied by

--286-- Cordelia and other children of “Uncle Joe and Aunt Cammie”; - prosperous cousins, the Neelys, who lived on Davis Ave. in North Mobile, as opposed to Toulminville, where the Dubrocas and Nicholas’ resided; the Neelys operated the slaughterhouse formerly owned by Caddie’s father, William Nicholas. Irene remembered playing with the Neely girls and receiving clothes from them that they had outgrown. - the Hultz family who were also slaughterhouse people and who were intermarried with the Nicholas/Dubroca/Neely families. In particular, Irene recalled going to a wake in which two Hultz girls were laid out after drowning in a ferry boat explosion. - the fried catfish, fried bananas, pork chops and onion gravy, stewed chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, boiled tongue, and “greens of all types” that they would feast on. - the fried chicken at the picnics the family took at a park on Three Mile Creek. Her father was a cigarmaker and as the industry softened in Mobile her family migrated first to Nashville, Tenn, in 1911, and then to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1914. Irene’s father died in 1918 and Irene was forced to leave school to work in a department store, Koops, to help support the family. She left that job to be hired by the Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company as a switch- board operator. In that position she recalls the Ohio River floods which hit the city and covered the lower floors above which the switchboard operators worked and slept until the waters receded. She also remembers the 1918 flu epidemic which struck down so many people across the country. As a youngster Irene won running races and as an adult she became a bowler and won medals during Telephone Company tournaments. She and her sister, Vera, also played instruments in a girls band — Irene played a hot piano and Vera played the saxophone; they also loved dancing, especially the “Charleston”. After her marriage to Buck Shawhan, she became a fulltime homemaker. Her father was a gambler and Irene also enjoyed playing cards for money — especially pinochle. She, like Buck, was a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds. An excellent seamstress, she could really make her old sewing machine do tricks, constantly repairing clothes, especially during the Depression days of the 1930s. (Refer to Volume II, p. 247, for a genealogy of the DUBROCA family) Arthur “Buck” Shawhan was born and raised in Loveland, Ohio, a community near the borders of Hamilton and Warren Counties. An excellent baseball player, he was given the nickname of “Buck” in reference to “Buck” Weaver, a star major league 3rd baseman with the Chicago White Sox. Buck’s son, Gerald, still remembers how his Dad, in his 50s, would still be able to blister him throwing the ball underhanded! After graduating from Withrow H.S. in Cincin- nati, Buck briefly attended the University of Cincinnati before he and a buddy, Emmit Driscoll, took off to tour the USA in a beat-up old jalopy. They didn’t get very far, only to St. Louis, before they found their way back to the Cincinnati area where Buck was hired by Western Electric Co, installing central office telephone equipment. It was while installing telephone switchboard equipment that Buck met and subsequently married Mary Irene Dubroca. This was during Prohibition days and the making of home brew became an art. Irene’s mother, “Caddie”, could make some of the best, and Buck insisted to his dying day that it was Caddie’s brew that swayed his thinking and fostered his courtship of Irene. During the 1930s Depression years, Buck would occasionally be laid off by Western Electric, and would be forced to take any job that was available to support his family, including working for the WPA in building the levees around Lunken Airport in Cincinnati. At times, his job with WE Co would take his family to such cities as Cleveland and Canton, Ohio. A very conscientious employee, during the 1937 floods which backed up the Little Miami River into his front yard, Buck drove out thru the back yard to a railroad track that was still dry, and drove along the rails to a point at which he could finally find a road that was passable. He was a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds and enjoyed taking his sons to old Crosley Field to watch the Reds play the St. Louis Cards Gas House Gang, the Brooklyn Dodgers with Jackie Robinson, and the NY Giants with Mel Ott. Buck would also frequently take his family on the annual trip to watch the Indianapolis 500 auto race, an exciting, thrilling event featuring such drivers as Mauri Rose, Bill Vukovich, and Wilbur Shaw. An avid card player, he thoroughly enjoyed pinochle, gin rummy, and hearts — always for a little money. He didn’t take it easy on his sons either — they learned the hard way! During WWII Buck and his family moved to Willmette, IL, as he was transferred to work on military projects at the Western Electric Hawthorne plant, in Chicago. They returned to Cincinnati as the War wound down. A committed, loyal employee, Buck would later be seriously ill with cancer; yet he refused to stop working, often having to return home during the day to change his shirt, sweat-logged from the effects of the disease — that was his way! Arthur Gaddis “Buck” SHAWHAN and Mary Irene DUBROCA had the following family: 96 i. Ronald Thomas SHAWHAN was born December 30, 1930. 97 ii. Gerald Louis SHAWHAN was born August 03, 1937. 65. His sister Ruby recalled their living on the family farm, with very few toys; Harry would spend hours playing with a stick and a rolling hoop. He was known as “Jim” because his older brother Skip (Clifford) insisted on calling him that since he was an infant. His middle name, Kennison, was chosen by his mother from a book she was reading at the time he was born. Harry was a respected businessman in Hartford City, operating the Shawhan Cigar and Sporting Goods Store (since 1928), until he retired in 1973. His business survived a 1954 gas explosion in the restaurant next to the store that completely destroyed the building housing the restaurant and the store operated by Harry and his brother Ralph; three people in the restaurant were killed but noone in the store. Born on an Iowa farm, Ena remembers going to school in a horse-and-buggy with her sister. She had always dreamed of becoming a nurse, so, after graduating with honors from high school, she managed to gain entrance to Drake University in Des Moines, IA, where she spent two years in pre-Nurse courses; she had to work her way thru school, by hiring out as a housekeeper, baby attendant, and similar positions. Ena then transferred to the U. of Minnesota’s School of Nursing; again having to earn her way, she recalls earning $7.00/week working fulltime during the summer as what is presently considered to be a “nanny”. She has since used her nursing knowledge in numerous ways, includ- ing volunteer work with the Red Cross, at mental hospitals, and in home situations. She is one remarkable person, having an excellent memory of past family relationships and stories to go along with them. Though in her eighties, she still travels by herself, driving across country to such places as Arizona, Illinois, and Iowa, often stopping along the way at locations in which she can further pursue her research into the Shawhan, Burdine, Anderson, etc. ancestry. Having lost two of her adult children to early deaths, she also maintains a strong, close rapport with her remaining children and her grandchildren. Starting out with a crystal radio set as a youngster, Neil eventually became a nationally known physicist. Born in Morrow, OH on one of the old Shawhan homesteads, he lived for a while with his grandfather, after the early death of his father. He remembers his grandfather’s house being located near the Morrow RR Station and not too far from the Little Miami River; in one instance, the river flooded and the family had to retreat to the second floor, where all they had to eat were some hard-boiled eggs. Neil graduated with a Masters Degree in Physics from Ohio Wesleyan in 1932, and then obtained his doctorate from Ohio State U. in 1935. It was in the middle of the Depression and he was happy to be accepted as a professor of Math and Mechanics at the U. of Minnesota; it was here that he met Ena Burdine, who was attending the University’s School of Nursing. After their marriage, and shortly before the start of WWII, Neil, Ena, and their baby son, Stanley, left the University and went to Washington, D.C. where Neil entered defense work at the Naval Ordinance Labs as a Sr. Physicist. During the War he was engaged in highly secret research, studying and solving the problems associated with degaussing Naval vessels to protect them against mines, etc. After the War, in 1946, he joined the Sun Oil Company (Sunoco) and took charge of their Physics Lab in PA, a career move. A brilliant physicist, he obtained 27 patents between his work with the Navy and the Sun Oil Company. Elbert Neil SHAWHAN and Ena Maxine BURDINE had the following family: 117 i. He was also a dedicated researcher of the Shawhan family lineage,

--291-- priding himself on the fact that everyone of his ancestors, from the original Darby, down to him and his sons, have been farmers. Whenever he and his family went on trips, Bill would use the opportunity to check out possible Shawhan relatives and ancestral data. He would transcribe this information onto hand-written pedigree charts, listing the results of his genealogical research; these have been very helpful in building the Shawhan family tree. Bill was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds; he also loved playing cards — gin rummy, hearts, and pinochle. He liked nothing better than playing cards with his grandkids. For many years she worked as a bookkeeper before eventually deciding to become a full-time mother to raise her adopted children. She subsequently returned to the workplace, with Blue Cross & Blue Shield, before retiring to enjoy her gardening, sewing, grandkids, and volunteer activities. Jane traces her ancestry back to her maternal grandfather, Henry Hellesen, who, as a 13 year old youngster, emigrated from his native Denmark to the US in the 19th century; he subsequently was able to bring his mother and sister over to the States. Her paternal side, the Brattons, trace back to Ireland. In his youth, living in Loveland, Ohio, John suffered terribly from asthma; his doctor recommended that John head west, to a more accommodating climate. In 1942, he was finally able to make his way to Denver, CO, where he immediately found a job at the Remington Arms Factory, which was heavily engaged in manufacturing 50 caliber machine gun ammo. There he met a fellow worker, E. Jane Bratton, whom he soon married. In 1946, at the age of 25, John established a freight traffic service, for transportation clients (e.g. truckers) who were not large enough to support a full-time traffic group of their own. He eventually became President and General manager of Transport Clearings of Colorado, Inc., serving numerous motor carriers and an airline, acquiring the reputation of being an expert in transpor- tation rates and tariffs. He maintains strong ties with his Loveland High School friends, making frequent trips back to Ohio for reunions. He and Jane have a vacation cottage in the nearby mountains, offering a beautiful view. John Henry MCLEAN and Ellen Jane BRATTON had the following family: 143 i. John Douglas MCLEAN was born April 20, 1956. 144 ii. Mary Jane MCLEAN was born April 26, 1959. 95. Walter Shawhan MCLEAN (Mildred Elizabeth SHAWHAN 63)47 was born in Loveland, Ohio May 22, 1924. He married Dorothy Ellen DEGRASSE in Cincinnati, OH, June 30, 1951. Dorothy was born in Brooklyn, NY September 26, 1923. Dorothy is the daughter of John DEGRASSE and Dorothy BRINKMAN. Though born and raised in the New York City area, Dorothy graduated from high school in Texas. She still enjoys returning to New York to partake of its many cultural opportunities. She is a very clever, creative person, with degrees in Music (violin), Advertising, and Metalsmith. After teaching for some 30 years, she presently occupies her time as a free lance artist, specializing in religious work — e.g. she crafted, out of copper and enamel, the Stations of the Cross for St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Washington, a suburb of Cincinnati. It’s always a pleasure to receive one of Dorothy’s Christ- mas cards, originally designed with her own unique talents. A very active member of her Episcopalian Church in Cincinnati, she serves in numerous leadership roles, often attending national conferences. One of her favorite vacation spots is Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts; she and Walt also enjoy taking cruises on small yachts around the Carib- bean. Her father, John DeGrasse, was a Merchant Marine Captain during WWII, surviving numerous encounters with German U-Boats. Dorothy traces her heritage back to a General Degrasse, who served in Napoleon’s army. Walt was born and raised in the Loveland, Ohio area. As a high school lad he worked part-time for the community’s dentist and once thought of becoming one himself. WWII interfered with his plans as he entered the US Navy, serving on an LCS (Landing Craft Support) in the Pacific Theater — at Saipan, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, etc; at Okinawa his LCS (#97, Code Name “Shaggy Dog”), was part of the picket line protecting US ships against Japanese suicide planes (“Kamikazes”) who were trying to get thru to the carriers and battleships. His ship also was caught in the terrible typhoon off Okinawa which was so strong that it capsized some ships, including three destroyers. His LCS was one of the first US ships to enter the port of Hiroshima at war’s end and Walt recalls the destruction he saw resulting

--293-- from the atomic bomb. After the War, Walt returned to Ohio and entered pre-Dent at Ohio State U. before switching to Law School at Chase College in Cincinnati. One Friday evening he decided to go to the local YMCA dance; lo and behold he met Dorothy Degrasse and marriage soon resulted. Walt subsequently became an insurance salesman for Monumental Insurance Company in Cincinnati, working for some 34 years before retiring; he keeps active by doing part-time telemarketing work and enjoying their granddaughter. He’s always been a die-hard fan of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, through thick and thin. Walt is known for his quiet, easy-going personality; he’s a gentleman through and through. Walter Shawhan MCLEAN and Dorothy Ellen DEGRASSE had the following family: 145 i. Dorothy Diane MCLEAN was born November 2, 1954. ii. John DeGrasse MCLEAN was born in Cincinnati, OH August 14, 1956. John died January 28, 1993 in NYC, at 36 years of age. Born and raised in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, John received degrees in Psychology and related disciplines before accepting a position in that field in New York City; he was working with clients at hospitals in NYC and inmates at Rikers Island at the time of his untimely death, from cancer. He was a very caring individual. 96. Ronald Thomas SHAWHAN (Arthur Gaddis “Buck” 64)48 was born in Cincinnati, OH December 30, 1930. He married twice. He married Theresa Adele ZEITLER in Charlevoix, MI, October 22, 1955. Theresa was born in Charlevoix, MI June 5, 1932. Theresa is the daughter of John ZEITLER and Edith NOWLAND. Theresa was divorced from Ronald Thomas SHAWHAN in Cleveland, OH, February 1979. Though receiving a civil divorce in 1979 it wasn’t until 1981 that their marriage was annulled thru the Diocese of Cleveland, OH. Born and raised in Charlevoix, MI, Theresa was the daughter of John Zeitler, an electrical contractor who was instrumental in the con- struction of many homes in the area; unfortunately, he was severely injured when he touched an electrical wire in which the power had mistakenly left hot — thus prevented from continuing to work he spent his later years tending to his garden. Theresa’s mother, Edith Nowland, was a very caring person, quiet but strong, who pretty well managed the homestead after John’s accident — she was an extremely nice woman. After graduating from high school, Theresa joined AT&T in Detroit as a teletype instructress, training personnel from such large companies as Delta Airlines — in this role she traveled the country. She and Ron met while both were on strike duty in Memphis, TN, after Southern Bell employees had left their jobs. With the advent of children, she became a fulltime homemaker, as a very caring and dedicated mother of her six children, ever willing to support their academic and athletic activities. After her divorce she moved first to Phoenix, AZ and subsequently to San Diego, CA, where she continues to enjoy her children and grand- children. Ron next married Elaine Therese OLSCHLAGER in No. Royalton, OH, March 30, 1979. Terri and Ron were first married by the Mayor of North Royalton, OH; they subsequently had their marriage reaffirmed by the Catholic Church in a ceremony on July 8, 1996, at our Lady of Peace in New Providence, NJ. Elaine was born in Cleveland, OH November 19, 1947. Elaine is the daughter of Arnold OLSCHLAGER and Margaret PETERS. Terri graduated from St. Joseph’s H.S. in Cleveland, Ohio and then worked for the Higbee Dept. Store before being hired by Ohio Bell in their Directory Dept. (Yellow Pages). After several years she was promoted into the Marketing Group as a Service Adviser training business customers in the use of telecommunications equipment and network services. While working full time she also managed to attend evening classes at Berea College. After her transfer to AT&T Headquarters in NY/ NJ she worked in the Legal Dept. during the antitrust litigation suits involving DOJ, MCI, Sprint, etc. She was subse- quently promoted to Manager level and has worked in various departments, including Finance, Regulatory, and AT&T Labs. In the interim, while attending evening classes at FDU, she acquired a B.S. degree in 1983 and a Masters degree in Finance in 1986. As a member of BPW (Business and Professional Women), in 1990, she was selected, together with some twenty other American business and professional women, to travel to Russia to meet with their Soviet counter- parts, comparing the social and occupational status of women in the two countries. Terri is quite active in her local Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady of Peace, as a Eucharist Minister, choir member, Liturgical Committee Chairper- son, etc. Terri also enjoys golf, bridge, and numerous other activities with her many friends and associates. Ron was born and raised in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, living in such suburbs as Twightwee (near Loveland, Ohio), Oakley, and Madisonville; he vividly recalls having his tonsils taken out, under ether, at the age of six, by Dr. Lever of Loveland. While a youngster, he cut grass, delivered newspapers, set up pins in a bowling alley, ushered in a movie theater, and caddied at such golf courses as Kenwood C.C. in Cincinnati; he also managed to play a pretty fair game of golf, football, and baseball. He attended Purcell H.S. on an accelerated course schedule, taking four years of school in three years. He won an NROTC scholarship, electing to attend Miami U. of Oxford, Ohio. While at Miami he worked in various restaurants to help pay his way and played on the golf team during his senior year. Upon graduation, Ron served two plus years as a USMC officer at such locations as Quantico, VA, Camp Pendleton, CA, Nara, Japan, and in

--294-- Korea with the First Marine Division. His USMC specialty was in Communications and Cryptography. His Korean duty involved service on the West Coast Islands, at the 38th parallel, providing security for intelligence activities in which Korean and Chinese infiltrators were sent into North Korea on spy missions. After resigning from the Corps he joined AT&T as a management trainee, working in various functions throughout the South and Midwest; occasionally he was able to indulge in his love of playing fast pitch softball, as a catcher. In time his specialty became sales of telecommunications products to major companies, such as Owens Illinois Glass Company in Toledo, Ohio. He was also assigned as the AT&T National Account Manager, based in NYC, for the Broadcast Industry, coordinating AT&T services for such events as Presidential races, golf tournaments, and NFL football. Along the way he coached neighbor- hood youth in football and baseball for about 16 years. His AT&T career concluded, after 30 plus years, with his assignment to the Legal Dept. in New Jersey, during DOJ/MCI/SPRINT antitrust litigation. He retired from AT&T in 1986 after which he worked in real estate and finally for a Taylor Rental franchise in Berkeley Hts, NJ. Ron retired in 1996 to enjoy his life-long love of golf, bridge, and pinochle,as well as participating in the local Senior Citizens Club activities, and pursuing his research of family history. Ronald Thomas SHAWHAN and Theresa Adele ZEITLER had the following family: i. Kevin Gerald SHAWHAN was born in Detroit, Michigan August 14, 1956. Kevin has always been a very creative person, coming up with new, fresh ideas; in 1972, at the time of the Olympics, he organized an “Olympics” for the neighborhood children in the family’s back yard. Later, he shot a bunch of home movies and then edited and cut them into a story line, complete with audio. He was an excellent student through high school, born with a special gift of being able to draw and use graphics. After graduation from high school he attended the U. of Cincinnati for one year, but was more interested in the social scene than he was in his studies. He then elected to attend the Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, OH, building upon his artistic talents accordingly. But he found the graphics employment market rather slow, so he joined the Navy, serving as a Petty Officer 2nd Class, in all the oceans of the world, on board the USS Vandegrift, a frigate; he also participated in maneuvers in the Persian Gulf during the Desert Storm time frame. After leaving the Navy, Kevin resumed his education, earning certification as a computer systems engineer and presently works in that field in the Silicon Valley area of California; his activities include the design of web sites. His nieces and nephews all love “Uncle Kevin” for his sense of humor and his ability to make everyone feel at ease — he’s just one heck of a nice guy! 146 ii. Kim Michelle SHAWHAN was born February 7, 1958. 147 iii. Kelly Thomas SHAWHAN was born September 28, 1959. 148 iv. Kirk Anthony SHAWHAN was born January 5, 1962. 149 v. He married Marian Joy SCHUTTE in Ft. Thomas, KY, May 25, 1963. Marian was born in KY March 16, 1939. Marian is the daughter of George SCHUTTE and Catherine IFKOVICS. A Registered Nurse by training, Marian keeps her hands full managing the household and volunteering in various roles at their church, including teaching. She is constantly busy helping others who are less fortunate. She has a strong sense of morality and ethics and, together with her husband, Gerry, has instilled these qualities in her children, all of whom exhibit the high standards set by their parents. Gerry was born while the family was living in Twightwee, OH, a suburb of Loveland, in Hamilton County; he was delivered by Dr. Lever. His brother, Ron, will never forget the incident — Ron went to sleep at the Twightwee resi- dence, but woke up the following morning at his grandmother Shawhan’s home in Loveland; his Dad, “Buck”, had carried Ron from his bed to the car and delivered him accordingly when it became apparent that a birth was about to happen. Gerry was an outstanding student as a youngster, taking the 7th and 8th grades in one year and taking four years of high school in three. He was also an excellent baseball player, once pitching a no-hit game in the Knothole League. After graduating from Purcell H.S. in Cincinnati, he matriculated at the University of Cincinnati, under their Co-op Program, working at such companies as NCR in Dayton, Ohio, and receiving a degree in Metallurgical Engi- neering in 1958. He subsequently acquired his doctorate in Mathematics in 1966, and became a professor at UC; he entered UC’s administration in 1961 and held a variety of positions, including Asst. VP for Administration and Director of Campus Planning and Construction. In 1983 he left UC to join Cincom Systems, a designer and seller of software where he became V.P. of Finance and Systems. A devoted family man, Gerry works closely with his wife, Marian, to assure that his seven kids are brought up with strong values and taught to be responsible — two of their daughters are nuns. He also enjoys sports, especially baseball, soccer, and golf, and volunteers as a coach accordingly. True to his heritage he is a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds.

The family originally came to the USA from Alsace Lorraine (France/Germany) where they spelled their name as “Kauffman”. Jane was raised in a home from which she could see the Golden Dome of Notre Dame University. Jane has been extremely helpful in researching the descendants of Allen Shawhan, making several trips to the Warren County, Ohio area in pursuit of information; Allen Shawhan was the ancestor of her husband Harry who had adopted the surname of his foster parents, the Ditzenberger family. Jane’s family research, after her husband’s death, confirmed that Harry’s birth father was actually a Shawhan; Jane changed her own surname from Ditzenberger to “Shawhan”. She herself has been a teacher for many years and has continued her personal education, including obtaining a Masters Degree in Education from Michigan State Univ. Shortly after his birth, Harry became the foster child of Henry Ditzenberger, thereafter using his foster father’s name rather than “Shawhan”. During WWII he served with the USMC, including duty aboard the battleship USS Nevada, supporting Marine landings in Pacific Ocean campaigns. Aboard the Nevada off of Iwo Jima, Harry was able to see the flag raised on Mt. Suribachi; at Okinawa the Nevada was hit by a Japanese Kamikaze (suicide plane) — the resultant explosion threw Harry to the steel deck, injuring his back, from which he suffered for the rest of his life. After the War he became a G.I. student at Ball State U., during which time he met and married Jane Coffman, whose ancestors came to the Pennsylvania-Maryland area from Alsace Lorraine in the 1760s. In the four days preceding his death, Stan had led a meeting of U.S. re- searchers who had gathered in Bethesda, MD to formulate space physics plans through the year 2010, laying the foundation for new and exciting discoveries on future space missions. On July 25, 1990, an Atlas-Centaur rocket was launched at Cape Canaveral, Florida, bearing a plaque with these words, “In memory of Dr. Stanley D. Shawhan — his vision led this spacecraft to reality”. His death was attributed to a heart attack, probably caused by health complications resulting from his many years as an insulin-dependent diabetic. He was buried in the cemetery at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestertown, MD, a church dating back to 1692; the registry of this same St. Paul’s Church documents that Darby Shawhan and Sarah Meeks were married Nov. 20, 1707. He is also very involved in Republican Party activities and Christian Coalition matters. He’s the type of person who has the energy, talent, and drive to call into radio talk shows to express his pleasure/displeasure about an issue. Dorothy was divorced from Jay BUSEMEYER about 1988. The marriage was annulled in Dec. 1988. Dorothy has an undergraduate degree from the U. of Cincinnati and a graduate degree in Classic Languages from Xavier U. Kim was an excellent student as a youngster and was also athletically inclined, playing shortstop on a girl’s softball team.. She elected not to attend college, taking a modeling course instead. After her divorce, she and her two children migrated from Cleveland, Ohio to San Diego, CA where she has worked as a V.P. with a mortgage company. After being downsized in a corporate takeover, Kim, an ambitious hard-worker, soon found new employment as an Accounting Supervisor in the banking industry. Kim has been a key person in coordinating family get-togethers, somewhat of a problem due to the geographic spread of the clan. As a single mother, Kim has actively participated in her sons’ sports, including serving as assistant coach at times. Kim Michelle SHAWHAN and Thomas URBANEK had the following family: i. Ryan Thomas URBANEK was born in Parma Hts, OH July 8, 1982. Ryan is an excellent athlete, excelling in Pop Warner football as a halfback and defensive back. He’s also an excellent swimmer and is taking up the game of golf. ii. Shaun Patrick URBANEK was born in Parma Hts, OH October 19, 1983. Shaun is a real hustler when it comes to working and saving his money. He is also a very good baseball player and thoroughly enjoys surfing in the San Diego area. 147. Kelly Thomas SHAWHAN (Ronald Thomas 96) was born in Parma Hts., OH September 28, 1959.

--303-- He married twice. He married Susan MCDONALD in Holliston, MA, August 22, 1981. Susan was born in MA about 1958. Susan is the daughter of John MCDONALD and Pauline WEST. Susan was divorced from Kelly Thomas SHAWHAN in San Diego, CA, 1993. A 1980 grad of Miami U. in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in Education, Susan served in the role of a military wife for several years while her husband Kelly, a USMC Captain, was assigned duty stations both stateside and overseas in Japan. After his resignation from the service, Susan, Kelly, and their two chil- dren settled in San Diego, where Susan worked full-time as a travel agent. Unfortunately, however, after a Halloween party, just before his 8th birthday, their son Matthew was killed in a traffic accident while crossing a street. Susan, though having a very hard time accepting what happened, has adapted and, together with her daughter Jacqueline, has become very instrumental in the success of the annual Matthew Shawhan Memorial Golf Tournament, the proceeds of which are rendered to a group sponsoring organ donations — a precedent set by Matthew’s corneas being donated at the time of his death. Susan presently works as a travel consultant in San Diego. Kelly has since married Teresa Marie MCMAHON in San Diego, CA, May 23, 1998. Terri, an RN, has fit in nicely with her husband Kelly’s “California” life style — she’s as much of a doer and party person as he is, if not more so. They’re always on the go. Kelly played football and baseball as a youngster, including varsity halfback on the Brecksville, Ohio team. He earned a NROTC scholarship to Miami U. in Oxford, Ohio, graduating in 1981 as a 2nd Lt., USMC. After Basic Training at Quantico, VA he served, with an artillery MOS, in Ft. Sill, OK, Twenty-Nine Palms, CA, and in Okinawa, Japan, later resigning his commission. He is presently a successful swimming pool contractor in San Diego, CA., and enjoys his family, golf, and playing softball. Kelly is a diehard fan of the Cleveland Indians, somehow managing to travel from San Diego to Cleveland to attend the 1997 World Series, where he was joined by his brothers Kevin and Kerry — how he obtained game tickets is a secret that he will probably carry to his grave! The unfortunate death of his young son, Matthew, hit Kelly hard, but he has shaken his grief to become a key figure in the annual Matt Shawhan Memorial Golf Tournament, the proceeds of which go to the co-sponsor, a national organ donor organization — Matt’s corneas were donated to two people at the time of his death. Tournament participants include organ recipients, living testimonials to the benefits of this valuable program. Kelly Thomas SHAWHAN and Susan MCDONALD had the following family: i. Jacqueline Nicole SHAWHAN was born in 29 Palms, CA August 25, 1983. An attractive young woman, Jacqueline excels in both academics and athletic, playing basketball and soccer. She has been a strong companion to her Mom since the death of her brother, Matthew. ii. Matthew Michael SHAWHAN was born in Ft. Sill, OK November 12, 1986. Matthew died October 28, 1994 in San Diego, CA, at 7 years of age. His body was interred 1994 in El Camino Park, San Diego, CA. Matt was a very smart, athletic young man, who had a great sense of humor; he had an early death, being struck by an auto while crossing a street after attending a Halloween party. In his memory, his family and friends have initiated a memorial golf tournament. usually played in the April time frame, the proceeds of which are given to an organ donors organization — at his death, Matt’s corneas were donated to appropriate recipients. To his family, the engraving on Matt’s memorial plaque says it all: “A friend, a grandson, a brother, my second grader, my athlete, my prince, my son, my love, my angel!”. 148. Kirk Anthony SHAWHAN (Ronald Thomas 96) was born in Parma Hts., OH January 5, 1962. He married Mary LOESER in South Bend, IN, April 1988. Mary was born in Saginaw, MI January 1, 1961. Mary is the daughter of Richard LOESER and Mary FLECKENSTEIN. Most of Mary’s early life was spent in Huntington, WV, the family home of both her father and mother. Her father, Richard Loeser, was a long time employee of the C&O RR, as was his father. Her mother’s family, the Fleckensteins, originally immigrants from Germany, owned and oper- ated a bakery in Huntington, specializing in cooking their breads and other goods in the same ethnic fashion as in Europe. After graduating from St. Mary’s College in South Bend, IN, where she met Kirk, Mary spent some time working with children in Washington, D.C. Since her marriage, she has been extremely supportive in her role as the wife of a career USMC officer, with its transfers, absences, etc. She is also recognized as an outstanding mother, taking care of her youngsters, with particular attention to the needs of their son, Thomas, a special child afflicted with motor and communication disabilities, who wasn’t expected to live more than a few years. She has insisted that he be treated as a normal youngster, despite his handicaps; he attends CCD classes as well as public school. She and Kirk have even entered Thomas on a T-Ball team where he plays, supported by his teammates who push him in his wheelchair after he hits the ball with the assistance of his Dad or another friend. The family was once the topic of a national CBS News story about advances being made in the handling of handicapped children. Very strong in their Catholic faith, Mary and Kirk have twice taken their children to the shrine in Lourdes, France. Mary doesn’t neglect her other children — she makes sure that Molly has opportunities to study music and to take dancing lessons. Daniel likewise has his moments

--304-- to shine. Kirk was an excellent student and athlete, excelling in baseball. After graduation from Brecksville, Ohio H.S. he earned a USMC scholarship to USC in Los Angeles, but, in his sophomore year, transferred to Notre Dame U. in South Bend, IN, from which he graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1984. He immediately entered the USMC as an officer, received his Basic Training at Quantico, VA, and has subsequently qualified as an aviator, flying EA6Bs, known as “Prowlers”, planes designed to thwart the enemy’s electronic/radar installations. He served in Bahrain during Desert Storm and, most recently, flew out of Aviano, Italy in support of the UN Bosnian operation. He is a devoted family man, with strong religious convictions. He also shoots a mean game of golf and delights in beating his dad and his brother Kelly. Kirk Anthony SHAWHAN and Mary LOESER had the following family: i. Thomas Patrick SHAWHAN was born in New Bern, NC February 16, 1990. ii. Mary Catherine (Molly) SHAWHAN was born in Stow, OH April 07, 1992. iii. Daniel Joseph SHAWHAN was born August 19, 1994. 149. Kerry Patrick SHAWHAN (Ronald Thomas 96) was born in Parma Hts., OH March 17, 1963. He married Rebecca Eileen “Becky” BUKAR in San Diego, CA, July 9, 1988. Rebecca was born in Michigan June 25, 1963. Born and raised in Michigan, after graduating from high school, Becky moved West where she met Kerry in Arizona. She then accompanied him in his move to San Diego where she found employment as a Medical Technician with a major medical group. Despite the sometimes difficult labor market in San Diego, Becky has strongly insisted that their son Kyle receive a parochial school education and she and Kerry have managed to do so. As a youngster Kerry was a daredevil — he was the first one to try anything on a dare, whether it was leaping from a tree into a pool or trying to fly, with makeshift apparatus, from the roof of the family home. Physically gifted, he could perform a reverse somersault from a standing start. Kerry was a so-so student as a youngster, usually more interested in mischief than in studying. He was a good athlete, in both baseball and in football where he was a varsity defensive back at Brecksville H.S. After high school he drifted thru various jobs until he found his notch as a carpenter; he is presently a contractor in San Diego, CA. He and his wife, Becky, are very supportive of the schooling and athletic endeavors of their children. Kerry has a wonderful way with kids — he’s a “cut-up” and all his nieces and nephews love to be with “Uncle Kerry” to witness his antics. He is also known as being an excellent cook, particularly in outdoor grilling. Kerry Patrick SHAWHAN and Rebecca Eileen “Becky” BUKAR had the following family: i. Kyle Thomas SHAWHAN was born in San Diego, CA January 23, 1990. A good student and athlete, Kyle also participates in fund-raising drives for the less fortunate. ii. Karl Joseph SHAWHAN (Ronald Thomas 96) was born in Parma Hts., OH April 28, 1964. He married Amber Elaine CANTRELL in Flagstaff, AZ, May 16, 1986. Amber was born in Granite City, IL October 16, 1963. Amber is the daughter of Noah CANTRELL and Nancy MOSER. Amber is also a NAU alumnus, having met Karl on campus. She’s quite an active mother, raising five children whom she also home schools. A redhead, “Red” is also very active with Lalache matters, counseling others. She is very supportive of her husband Karl’s Air Force officer responsibilities, holding firm regardless of how often he “TDYs” away from home. She and Karl are both very proactive when it comes to seeing that their children enjoy a normal lifestyle, in their religious studies, academically, athletically, culturally, etc., despite their frequent transfers in duty stations. She usually attends daily Mass with her children, often finding a son being called on to serve during the ceremony. Amber’s ancestry includes that of Native American Indian blood, from her paternal grandmother, Susan Marie Nations. Though he was the youngest child in the family, Karl was always ready to help out his mother or dad; he particularly enjoyed joining his dad in home improvement projects. As a youngster in NJ, he loved to go to the beach and bodysurf on the ocean waves, sometimes on his dad’s back. He was a very good, conscientious student as a youngster, earning excellent grades. He also played JV football as a linebacker at Brecksville H.S. in Ohio. He subsequently earned an AFROTC scholarship to Northern Arizona U. in Flagstaff, AZ, majoring in Computer Science. He helped earn his way thru school by tutoring students in computer usage. Upon graduation he was trained as a Bomber/Navigator flying B52 bombers. He subsequently became qualified as a pilot flying B1 bombers — he and his crew received numerous awards and commendations, one of which was for a 33 hour flight from Texas to Egypt and return, without stopping.
