Now it’s time to act on the water vision Kansas has much to offer new businesses and residents now and into the future, but if its aquifers and reservoirs dry up, the state might has well board up the borders. That’s why Gov. Sam Brownback’s push for a 50-year vision plan for water is not just wise but essential, and could well define legacy. It’s also urgent, given that the Ogallala Aquifer, the major source of water for irrigators in the western third of Kansas, could be 70 percent used up in 50 years if nothing changes. The product of input from 12,000 citizens and 250 meet- ings, the second draft of the water plan was released earlier this month at the Governor’s Water Conference in Manhattan with the expectation the plan will be finished in time for the legislative session in January. Many of its dozens of ideas focus on sustaining the Ogallala and on dredging the reservoirs in northeast Kansas. There is a picture of Clark Gable as Rhett Butler Cryptoquip on one deck and a picture of Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara on the other deck. The cards don’t look like they have ever been used and are in a tin with a picture of the couple kissing on the front. The bottom of the tin is stamped “The Heirloom Tradition, No. 144109.” There Mother Goose and Grimm • Mike Peters are three dates on the back, 1939, 1967 and 1989. Is there any value to these cards? A: Your decks of cards were issued in 1989 to mark the 50th anniversary of the movie, “Gone With the Wind.” The movie, first released in 1939, was re-released in 1967. The only way to guarantee that the cards have never been used is if they are still sealed in plastic wrap. This set of two decks of cards in its tin often sells online for $4 to $10. Tip: Keep dolls away from direct sunlight to avoid fading their hair and clothes. (c) 2014 by Cowles Syndicate Inc. Bridge • Steve Becker Sally Forth • Greg Howard Crossword • Eugene Sheffer

Famous Hand One of the really great falsecards of all time occurred in a home game in New York many years ago. The hero of the hand was a man named Sidney Satenstein, an enthusiastic rubber-bridge player not nationally known. The victim of the falsecard was John Rau (South), a well-known expert. Rau played low from dummy on the opening spade lead, losing to the king, and his A-Q fell together on East’s spade return. Rau had seven sure tricks – four hearts and Zits • Jim Borgman & Jerry Scott three aces – so the outcome appeared to rest squarely on finding Satenstein (East) with the king of diamonds. If he had it, Rau could assure nine tricks by taking two finesses. But Rau was not content to settle for just the 50 percent chance that the finesse would succeed. He saw that he could increase his chances slight- ly by testing the clubs first. So at trick three he led a low club from dummy, whereupon Satenstein played the king! Rau took the ace and – after patting himself on the back for leading a club first – continued with the nine and finessed. He naturally thought West had started with the J-8-2 and East the singleton king. Satenstein pounced on the trick like a bird of prey and returned a spade, and West cashed three spades to sink the contract. It was the kind of sit- uation where the victim rejoices together with the victor, and for years afterward Rau took pleasure in recounting the clever hoax perpetrated against him. Of course, had Satenstein made the normal play of the jack on the first club lead, Rau would have had no choice but to take two diamond fi- nesses, and he would have made the contract with an overtrick.
